thanks guys, this community helped me learn to do what I do and why I learned enough to mod, giving back to this community is the least I can do IMHO

I'm playing through another GFO campaign! My RFB mod soup was great and all, but sometimes you just want some action!

I third it! GFO proves that you don't have to reinvent SH4 to make it great fun. GFO lets the core game shine and just sits in the background, not attracting any attention to itself. But believe me, you'd miss it if it were gone!

Some of my most memorable cruises have been with GFO. And Webster's ideas for the components that make up GFO have become the central vision for a new supermod for SH$, Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate. We'll have lots of small, single purpose, compatible plugin mods, certified to work without interference together. Webster started that. Thanks Webster! You're credit number one on the Plugin Mods release and you changed SH4. Hail the revolution! Webster's revolution.

I think I have said this before that I find GFO is very underrated and like RR I have also had some memorable times with it.

I can't wait for this supermod "Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate". Is there a prospective time of arrival? I'm not really satisfied with the TMO/RSRD combo... Primarily because it is just too darn difficult to find multiple ship convoys. I'm hoping it improves a little later, but up thru early 1943, it's really somewhat devoid. There are enough single ship and a rare escort to keep one entertained, but it's not like I envisioned the first part of WW2 to be like at all, especially having read 5 great sub books this summer.

1. Wahoo (by Richard O'Kane)
2. Clear the Bridge (by Richard O'Kane)
3. Silent Running (by James Calvert)
4. Thunder Below! (by Eugene Fluckey)
5. and of course the fiction book: Run Silent, Run Deep

By the way mark your calendar's/DVDs. The original movie (Run Silent, Run Deep) with Clarke Gable and Burt Lancaster is scheduled to be shown on Wednesday, November 2nd at 0830 (not sure what time zone) on TCM (Turner Classic Movies)

You know, I'm in the middle of Clear the Bridge right now. For some inexplicable reason, I'd never read the book before and Subsim's Dick O'Kane Manual Targeting Technique is something I and others came up with in 2009!

I had always said that the Dick O'Kane Technique was named in honor of Dick O'Kane and was not meant to represent his actual practices during the war: that the technique was historically plausible but it couldn't be established that submarines actually did the procedure during the war.

After reading chapter 7, I can say that Dick O'Kane did nearly exactly what we independently developed with a computer game! The only difference between my technique and Dick O'Kane's is that I don't worry about an exact zero gyro shot, being willing to accept a small single digit angle as functionally equivalent.

Dick O'Kane started with zero gyro and backed into the lead angle of the shot from there. It was easier to do with the real TDC than our TDC. Other than that the mechanics were identical: set up the shot, maneuver the boat into the proper position, shoot aimed shots at specific points of the target.

Yikes! Why did I wait so long to read his book?

You have produced a lot of great stuff, but the best in my opinion is "Stop the Shouting"! Thanks much.

You know - I have read all of them except Clear the Bridge

How could I have missed that?

Next on my reading list

PS Don't forget
Silent Victory - by Clay Blair
Very good :)
