I'm sorry to bother you, but can't find a solution to my issue. My mods:

I finished the first patrol without issues, but later patrols have been experiencing more and more crashes when I try to load saved games. I'm on the fourth patrol and can't seem to proceed.

I didn't alter my mods since the campaign began. I don't Alt + Tab to desktop with the game running.

On patrols 2 and 3 when the game would crash on loading a save, I loaded a previous save and once that ran, loaded the latest saved game. That no longer works. My saved game file sizes never exceeded 5MB and I can't load 2MB size files now. The one thing I am able to load is the saved games upon entering and leaving port (<1MB file size).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Question: if I save a game with a contact on radar at 8nm distance, will that cause issues?

Are you saving them to the same name? I found that caused a lot of crashes.

granite00

No, each save gets a unique name and I never overwrite saves.

Saving game while there're nearby contacts maybe would cause problems.
As you've said, you can load upon entering/leaving port.Okay, try loading upon leaving port, let the game start and now load the crashed save.It worked for me for Operation Monsun mod.

nionios,
I've tried that several times with no luck.

I have virtually the same Mod list as you. I eliminated the crashes by first adding the SH4.exe to the Large Address Aware program, adding the 4Gb patch for good measure, and following an old protocol for saving that includes always saving from the Control Room view (F2), and waiting a bit (30 seconds to a minute) for the game to fully save to disk (it's not instantaneous). I actually watch my disk activity light to make sure the major activity has stopped before hitting the Resume button. The only times I will lose a Save game (unable to reload) is one taken near the end of a patrol that had a lot of activity (many sinkings), and I think that too is because I did not let the Save activity complete before exiting or moving on.

This all may be anecdotal, and the software engineers out there may say it is all superstition, but it works for me. Like many suggested, I (almost) never overwrite a previous save, using the game's date as the key save name feature. Good luck!:salute:

I have shown in red, what you really do not need and can cause problems.

The reference to the 4GB patch is good and important, without the run in SH4 no major modes.

I would suggest SH4 completely uninstall then again everything reinstall (also the SH4 folder under "My Documents") included 4GB patch and JSGME.

Alternatively, I can offer you my ModSoup for TMO_RSRDC_OTC which runs without problems and stable.
There is everything in there what you are looking really ... and much more.

Hope this helps you further.

Edit:

I don't Alt + Tab to desktop with the game running.

Alt + Tab to desktop destroyed your game and Scores.
So never not practice ... :know:

TorpedoBait,
Thanks for taking the time to help me.

I have 64 bit Win 7 with 16GB of RAM, so I don't think the 4GB patch for WIN XP is called for or am I missing something?

Question on the Large Address Aware program. I have tried to use it, but it will not apply to the SH4.exe file. That is the target file, right? LAA will simply not change from "false" to "true" on my SH4.exe file, but it works on other .exe files in my game folder.

These problems have been largely treated by RSRDC and OTC as resolved by Ralles ModSoup.

Since the development of FORTS -ultimate- certainly takes still requires a good deal of time, I can give you this advice only alternative.

... I have 64 bit Win 7 with 16GB of RAM, so I don't think the 4GB patch for WIN XP is called for or am I missing something? ...

The operating system knows about all the RAM you have, but the app does not. If neither 2gig app will "take" on your SH4.exe, check to see if you have the "Read Only" set in the General properties tab. Navigate to your SH4 game folder, right-click on SH4.exe, left-click on properties, and the General tab should be the first one open (usually). There should not be a check mark in the "Read Only" toward the bottom of the tab. If there is, click on it to make it go away. If it isn't there, then something else is going on with that.

Some of the mods Bleiente mentions probably overwrite portions of the other mods, which in some cases can then cause issues with the "base" mod's 'efficiency', shall we say, and sometimes its actual functionality. Issues like that can cause a drop in framerate, disply glitches, or CTD probs. It might also be that some of the mods are redundant. I'm not familiar with what all you have, but I've encountered similar issues before by making my own "mod soup" - quite by accident, of course...

Thanks so much propbeanie,
That was it; SH4.exe was Read Only. I reached port, removed these:
TMO_Visuals_for_RSRDC
Fixed_CD_sonar_RSRDC
IJN_Radar_Fix_2

and applied the Large Address Aware program to SH4.exe. I'll give that a go.

What makes you say these four mods are not needed and can cause problems?

I can't speak to the "Easier AI for TMO" mod, but the other three are already in the" OTC for RSRDC v502"

As propbeanie said, the games sh4.exe file is defaulted to "Read-Only" status. changing this parameter by unchecking the menu box and saving will allow LAA to work as expected. With a 64 bit OS, you'll gain double the defaulted memory access that the game originally runs. Should be a big help.

==================

Question: if I save a game with a contact on radar at 8nm distance, will that cause issues?

I don't think so. The usual issue is there's too much memory usage when you try to save (like a large convoy just off from the sub, or the game trying to render too much of the near by land, or a swarm of planes). A detected target that isn't even rendered yet at 8 nm shouldn't cause a bit of trouble. It's also possible that you should give the game plenty of time to save a game file completely before exiting the game. I know you should give the game plenty of time just to exit, before going to something else....adding a large save probably will require even longer to complete.

If you want to save on the surface, no contacts in detector range, not within x miles of shore, facing Mecca that's Silent Hunter III! SH4 is the stable game that requires none of that. You can even save in combat with a torpedo halfway to the target and it works fine.

But time after time we read these SH3 bugs being applied to SH4. They don't happen here. That was the main reason I gave up on SH3 and went to SH4.

I overwrite saves like a teenager texts. I have two saves: 1 and 2. I just alternate between them. In the extremely rare instance that I have a problem I just load up the backup. Never a problem. Only one failure in 7 years of playing. Then the backup save leaving port got loaded and I lost a week of game time.

This looks like corrupted files. You can play games with fixes for another game entirely, or you can uninstall completely, reinstall, restore the exact same mods (I think you have WAY too many mods there and need to get rid of half of them) and try again.

If that doesn't work, some of your mods were not made by Ducimus and the first thing he would tell you is there's yer problem, right there, bub! Back out one at a time and see if you're more stable. That means your present career would be toast. But it would mean that you wouldn't have to put up with this foolishness any more.

Traveller mod especially is buggier than the Everglades with much bigger mosquitoes. Nothing good will come of that.

I've noticed that people who have more problems are in the habit of checking into port and refitting half a dozen times during a cruise. This extends cruises way beyond anything historically done and blows up save files to Hindenburg size. The larger a save game file is the higher risk for corruption.

A big part of the answer is "don't refit!" When you're out of torpedoes, end the cruise! That's the only way you get promotions, boat upgrades, renown updates, chance at new crew members, AND reset the size of your save game file so the chance of corruption is minimized.

That alone could be the secret of why I don't have the problem.

I follow the same procedure as RR and I have never had a single save corrupt in more than a year.

Good evening, everyone. I'm new here and currently trying to get my game to work with a couple mods enabled and since this thread was already on the topic I thought I'd post about it here. Today has been my first attempt modding Silent Hunter 4 so there may have been something obvious I've missed. I have version 1.5 of the base game and am using JSGME to install the mods.

So far I have:

1_Trigger_Maru_Overhaul_2-5
RSRDC_TMO_V502

Loaded in that order. When I have only TMO enabled the game works fine but when I add RSRD it crashes during the initial loading screen when starting the game. It seems like I must be doing something wrong as I see a lot of people running these mods in conjunction.

Thanks ahead of time,

Chris.

Hi Haraldsson,

You have the mods installed in the right order. Most folks also install the TMO Small Patch (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom//downloads.php?do=file&id=3506) and the RSRDC Patch 1 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom//downloads.php?do=file&id=1459). Each patch is installed after its main super mod like this:

1_TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5
1_TMO_25_small_patch
RSRDC_TMO_V502
RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1

I'm not sure this will fix the crash problem, but give it a try.

1_TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5
1_TMO_25_small_patch

Only after I have a good set of mods and everyone uses them.
Pity me with the great ISP 2.6. Help:wah:

Check your mod folder structure for all your mods. Should be:

[Game folder] / [Silent Hunter] / MODS / [ModName] / Data / [BlahBlah]

As an example, I'm noodling with Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate v.1beta. I have a folder on my E: drive named "Ubisoft" that I installed my Silent Hunter to, and I re-named the game's folder from Silent Hunter to "SH4v15FotRSU" so that I wouldn't confuse the install with my regular Silent Hunter and my GFO modded one. (I use MultiSH to save to different directories for all my installs.) I then enable the "100FallOfTheRisingSunUltimate" mod and do me some testing. My folder structure for that mod is:

E:\ Ubisoft \ SH4v15FotRSU \ MODS \ 100FallOfTheRisingSunUltimate \ Data \ [bunch of other folders and files]

There is also a "Support" folder under the "100Fall..." mod folder. Some mods have alternate mods under their "title" folder, so the main mod may be a folder or two deep, and isn't actually getting enabled by JSGME, even though it might look like it. I'd suspect a patch file or two in your case. Your MODS folder has to have the mod's folder, and then the Data folder right below it.

You might also be running into the 2gig memory limit, but check your mods first, and report back...

I checked the location of the mods as you suggested. They are all located in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Silent Hunters Wolves of the Pacific\MODS

Within the MODS folder, there is the following list of other folders along with a txt and an ini:

!BACKUP
!NSTLOGS
1_TMO_25_small_patch
1_TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5
RSRDC_TMO_V502
RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1
JSGME file snapshot.txt
JSGME.ini

In that order.

Also, I probably should have noted initially that when I use JSGME to enable RSRDC_TMO_V502 I get the following message from JSGME:

"Enabling this mod *may* have adverse effects on your game. Are you sure you wish to enable this mod?"

I get this message along with a humongous list of files that have "already been altered by ...et cetera..."

I did as you advised and ensured that all of the mod folders contain their respective "data" folders directly beneath them. I found that "RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1" had within it a subfolder also named "RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1" which finally had the "data" folder within it. IE, two levels removed. I moved the "data" folder to be directly beneath the main folder, re-enabled the mods, and still get the crash to desktop during the loading screen, about when the loading bar is 75% complete.

Thanks for the help thus far,

Chris.

First of all, you should have your games installed outside the system protected Program Files (x86) directory. Propbeanie has a root directory called Ubisoft. You can have Steam install games anywhere you want and that's change #1 that you need.

Second, JSGME warns you any time when you are overwriting a file already in a previously installed mod. RSRDC steamrollers TMO, leaving it mostly overwritten and you are playing something very different from TMO when you install it. JSGME is alerting you that things that TMO modified before are being removed/replaced by RSRDC and that's how RSRDC is supposed to work (unfortunately). In other circumstances it might be a problem, but you want RSRDC so just let 'er rip.

Make sure your install order is
TMO
Small patch
RSRDC
RSRDC patch

Those two changes should fix your problem. Keep us posted!

Afterthought: how much RAM do you have? Have you enabled the 4GB aware patch to SH4?

Seconded

When I had SH4 installed in the default steam directory, I could not get mods to work - Windows views it as a protected folder

I Made a separate folder on the top level of my C Drive, I called it Games-Steam (you can call it whatever you want) - and downloaded the game inti it

Once I did this Mods worked just fine
