View Full Version : Yet ANOTHER Lag Thread (I'm So Confused!)

Hey so I know how most of these threads go...someone with a meh computer trying to run SH5 on max settings and asking why they have lag. Well, that used to be me...except now it's 1000x more confusing.

So I have a laptop that I got about 3 months ago which is an MSI GS60 Ghost Pro Laptop. It can run any game on 1080p and get almost 60fps (except for horribly optimized games), but it can run ArmA 2 at ~60fps and around 40fps in cities which is really good for ArmA. The only game it can't run, is Silent Hunter 5.

So here's how it goes. I boot up steam, see SH5 in my library and think to myself "i think I'll download and play some SH5." So after it's done downloading, boot it up, go through the annoying 20min setup that uPlay asks for, get into the game. Here's where it gets interesting. Getting roughly 60FPS on the title screen which is pretty bad. I think to myself, "Oh! Well, I imagine Ubisoft just limited the title scene to 60fps" because it wasn't going above or below it, just staying right at 60.

I don't think much about it so I head into a new campaign with the Open Horizons II mod, get into the game, immediate 10-15 FPS. Never higher. Immediately get confused, so I check out my settings. Okay, I've got everything on high and BOOM! I found the problem, or so i thought. Resolution was set to 2880x something that I can't remember exactly. (Basically 3K resolution.) Turn that down to 1920x1080, restart the game. Title screen is still 60FPS, head into the game, still 10-15 except now it would occasionally go up to 17 or 18. Check my settings again.

Turn off Vsync and turn shadows all the way off, restart game. Now at the title screen I am getting 250FPS! I get really excited because I think I fixed it, get into the game, 10-15FPS. Check all my settings, turn everything on low. Restart game.

Launch the game, 300FPS at title screen. Actual game loads up, max of 20FPS. With everything LOW! Did some research online, downloaded the lag fix. It gave me approximately 0 extra frames. I'm just so lost, this doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Specs (Not exact but specific enough to know that they are good enough to run SH5)

Processor: Intel i7 4-core @2.5ghz overclockable up to 3.6ghz
GPU: Nvidia GTX 870M w/ 3gb vram
RAM 16GB DDR3 (or DDR4 can't remember)
1TB HDD and 128MB 2Msata SSD

Answers I'm not looking for:

-"Try the lag fix!" I already did that...
-"SH5 doesn't work on laptops" Not true, I used to run SH5 on high getting 25-40fps on an older laptop with 8gb ram and a GTX 640M (Way worse than this one)
-"SH5 doesn't bode well with Nvidia graphics" Maybe, but if it could run pretty well on a 640M there is no reason it shouldn't run really well on a 870M

I checked my task manager, only 27% of RAM being used including SH's ram usage which is almost 1GB, sometimes more.

Turned off internet, restarted computer to make sure everything was closed and booted up SH, still 10-15 fps maybe 20 if I'm lucky on the worst possible settings.

Tried restoring files and booting up Sh5 without Open Horizons and still no FPS gain. keep in mind the 20fps only came when I was in port, I wasn't even near lots of models or anything. And the reason i was in port was because I tried booting a campaign half way through with silentotto code and it also didn't work (obviously) lol.

What is this? Also don't tell me that my drivers need to be updated. This computer is almost brand new and I just updated my drivers a week ago. looking at it right now, says that all drivers are up to date.

Again it can run literally almost any game (including Battlefield 4 on ULTRA and ArmA 2 on ULTRA) but can't get more than 20FPS on Silent Hunter 5.

Any suggestions please leave them.

EDIT: I'm also running it on Windows 8.1, which is what i ran it on before so idk why this would be the problem.

Only mods I have on right this second are Open Horizons II and the Lag Fix which doesn't even really count as a mod.

And I tried doing a fresh install and got lag so not sure why that would be the problem. Nevertheless, I appreciate your help good sir ;)

the lag fix it's not a mod and must not be enabled with Generic mod enabler .....if u mean the antilag u must copy all files from Antliga folder to the main Sh5 folder to work properly .........

Thanks guys!

And yes that is what I meant. I installed antilag. Today i completely reinstalled the game again to it's default state and still 10-15fps.

I'm having similar issues. System specs:

Processor: Intel i7 4702HQ @2.2ghz
GPU: Nvidia GTX 870M w/ 3gb vram
RAM 8GB DDR5
512GB Samsung SSD
Windows 10

Running TWoS mod with no changes, and started with an FPS of 7 (not a typo)

Installing the antilag files made no difference. Next I did a search and came up with a thread containing this post:

Don't use 3d clouds
Shadow slider all way to left (so none at all)
Terrain objects and particles density move notches left
Don't use light shafts and ships caustic effects (caustics is included in several mods)

Get this d3d_antilag101 leave as-is and place the two items in game directory (eg : c:/ubisoft/silenthunter5/2 items from d3d_antilag101 here)

Ohh the AA slider have more to the left than right if that's possible

And stay away from heavy smoke mods etc

Hope that gets you started

I followed those recommendations, and the result was an increase in FPS from 7 to 15. Which is still atrocious. Are there any other recommendations for improving FPS? Any sorts of switches that could be applied to the shortcut?

I have SH5 installed (with TWoS) on my laptop with the following specs:

Processor: Intel i7 4700HQ @2.4ghz
Memory installed: 16 GB RAM
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 880M
Integrated graphics card: Intel HD Graphics 4600
256 GB SSD
Windows 10 64 bit

I encountered simillar problems as users in this thread. Usually my framerate stayed arround 15, dropping further when graphic demands became high. I tried a few things, including:

* Run the program as Admisistrator;
* Run the program in Windows 7 compatibilty mode;
* Use the Antilag tool.
* Changing the settings in the Nvidia configuration screen

After this my framerate improved to 60 fps and the game is running smoothly. As I did the above things at the same time I did not know which actually fixed the problem. Now after some testing I found that FOR ME (no guarantees) the problem was caused by the wrong setting in the Nvidia configuration screen. It seems the game was using the integrated Intel graphics card instead of the Nvidia card. You can change this in the Nvidia configuration screen:

Open NVIDIA configuration screen --> Control 3D settings --> Program settings --> 1. Select SH5 in the list of games --> 2. Select Nvidia processor as preferred graphics processor for this program --> Apply

I found that the standard selection for the graphics processor is the integrated processor leading to poor performance in game. This worked for me, hope it helps.

We have a winner! I did the same thing and the FPS immediately leaped to a steady 60. As a test, I restored the other changes (from the post I quoted above), and the FPS began to cycle rapidly from 35 to 60, depending on what I was doing. So there are still some helpful things besides the Nvidia settings that should be done, although the Nvidia change is the most important by far. I'll play around with this some more, and report findings.

To emphasize the key point from Markus' post: You need to go into the Nvidia Control Panel and make sure there is a setting specifically for SH5, AND that setting specifically uses the Nvidia card instead of the mainboard graphics processor (there's a selection box for this). And don't forget to "Apply" the changes!

Great find Markus! :salute:

Test results: Assuming you've made the Nvidia adjustments noted above, the best FPS results will come by REMOVING the two anti-lag files (again, assuming you installed the anti-lag fix) and then setting "shadows" to zero (slider all the way left). All the other "High" predefined settings can stay as-is. This results in an FPS of 40-60 when moving about the boat, and (in limited testing) a range between 50 and 60 when outside.

These are for my system, and your results may vary.
