I was in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania over the weekend. My son and I were in Pittsburgh over the weekend to watch the Chicago Cubs vs Pittsburgh Pirates play baseball. The Pirates played baseball this weekend, I'm not sure what the Cubs were doing. This really has no bearing on my post here, I was just mentioning what I was in town for.

I went to the Carnegie Science Center located on the Ohio River and took a tour of the USS Requin and while there took many pictures of the submarine and its interiors. I apologize in advance for the poor quality of some of these pictures, I guess my camera or my eyesight is somewhat on the old side.

So here the pictures of the Tench class Submarine, the USS Requin (SS-481).

Looking from the shore at the superstructure of The USS Requin.

This next picture is from an info poster of the Requin seen before you walk the ramp to the stern of the sub.

Looking from the walkway towards the bow of the USS Requin.

You board the sub via walkway to the stern of the sub. This next pic is looking forward from the stern.

This picture is looking at the entrance which leads below to the Forward Torpedo Room.

Here's a picture of the Forward Torpedo Room. The torpedo on display to the left of the picture is a Mark 23, BTW. A gentleman that was stationed in the forward torpedo room remarked to me that some sub veterans couldn't understand why they put a Mark 23 in the room.

This set of pictures is just behind the forward torpedo room, I believe this was the Officer's Country.

Needless to say, I had an absolute ball touring the sub and talking to some of the volunteer workers that work on the sub. It was a great way to spend a Saturday morning. I hope you enjoyed these pics of the USS Requin, because I sure had fun posting them. :yep: :D :yeah:

Very interesting pictures especially in view of the cold war reconstruction. The tower seems to come from the Guppy III program ... the hull was not adjusted.

The USS Requin recently had a major upkeep done to her. I refer you to the picture below. :yep:

Very nice cdsubron7. In the first pic, who'd use that doorway on the side of the conn with the very BIG first step?...

Have you ever been to Charleston, SC and seen Patriot's Point and the USS Clamagore (http://www.patriotspoint.org/explore/uss-clamagore/)? I've got pics somewhere around here of that (and the Yorktown and the Laffey)...

Actually Requin would be a Guppy I as the bow is not modified. Only the conning tower is adjusted to protect the innocent!:D

Here's a gaggle of Guppy IIIs for your listening and dancing pleasure.

I've had the pleasure of touring two other WW II subs. One the USS Cobia in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The USS Ling in Hackensack, New Jersey. :salute:

I need to get myself to the US at some point
Seems like you guys actually held onto some of your WW2 ships and subs for future generations to experience :salute:

All we held on to is the HMS Belfast (light cruiser)

I have been to the HMS Belfast a few times - and admittedly it is awesome:)

But I wish we had done the same as you - and held on to some WW2 Battleships, Carriers, Subs etc etc etc...

If you go "the long way", and stop in at Pearl Harbor... man... The Mighty Mo watching over the Arizona - haunting. I've been on the Wisconsin also, at the other end of the U.S.ofA. The Norfolk Naval Base is down the road from there, and you'll see any number of ships "at home", including the big carriers. I couldn't quite see as much of the active navy at Pearl. Then you go see one of the subs scattered about the US, and you realize just how small them things are/were, and why they called them "boats" instead of ships. They're about the size of a football field - er, rugby field...

Does anyone know why the conning tower is so big?

Nice.

What camera did you use?

In the future, when in low light situations, bump your ISO up, that will allow you to select a faster shutter speed. Looks like the first set of images was taken at a 15th of a sec or lower. Its almost impossible to get a sharp image handholding a camera with that low of a shutter speed.

Thanks for sharing! :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

When I was maybe 7 or 8 I visited the Carnegie Science Center and toured the USS Requin. This is the sub that made me fall in love with subs.

Great pictures. Thanks for sharing. The Requin was also involved in searching for the Skipjack class Submarine, USS Scorpion SSN 589, when the Scorpion was lost in May of 1968.

Welcome aboard as well Hiarhu :sunny:
