View Full Version : How to save-edit in more torpedoes?

I'm very new to the game, and I'm currently just getting a feel for things (though I am running the TMO and RSRD mods).

I recently went out on patrol, attacked and sank several ships, but I was down to eight torpedoes afterwards. I went back to the base I had sortied from to rearm (like I had done numerous times before), but despite the base clearly being in allied hands, it wouldn't register me as being in port, and wouldn't let me rearm. The port symbol still showed up at Darwin, so I figured the base had somehow "fallen" (despite not) and no radio messages were given about it (which is, itself extremely odd. It seemed like there were a lot of flavor-messages regarding current events and such when I first started career mode, but now there don't seem to be any).

I went towards Singapore to find some more targets for my remaining fish, and I found them and sank them. Then, right as I'm leaving...two Takao-class heavy cruisers and a light cruiser show up. Seeing as this is the first time I've seen anything larger than a destroyer (let alone two heavy cruisers), I want to get a feel for attacking them. But I have no torpedoes.

Can anyone help me with editing my save file(s) to add some torpedoes into my magazines? I've been looking in the "ActiveUserPlayerUnits.upm" file (incidentally, there is another such file in the folder "UPCInitial" that is within each save folder, and they seem identical...no idea what the deal is there), and while I feel like it's the right place to look, there doesn't seem to be anything regarding whether or not any given torpedo tube is loaded, nor anything about the overall torpedo magazines, despite the file covering every subsystem and equipment. Of particular interest is the "AmmoMagazineSize=1", followed by "AmmoMagazineRemaining=0" (and it is ALWAYS zero, in every save).

Any help would be appreciated.

When you are close enough to an active port's anchor symbol (home base or one of the others) an icon shows up in the upper right corner of the game screen. Did you click on it? When you do, a gray box opens up giving you choices of rearming etc.

I know about that--this time, there was no such icon at all, and there was no "active port's anchor symbol" on the map, despite there being one there when I left on that same patrol (and no radio messages indicating that something had happened to make said port no longer active, as well as the fact that it still showed up blue on the map and had no enemies present).

Regardless, I need a way to save-edit in more torpedoes, because there's nowhere near enough time to go all the way to Darwin to rearm and make it back.

EDIT: Thanks for the welcome, guys :)

It's interesting. We do have two programs that look at save files and give you information: Damage Analyzer and SH4 Report. But nobody has ever come up with a program to actually edit the savegame file.

I've never looked at the structure of the savegame files and I'm kind of busy right now with a small "project" for Silent Hunter 4, but at some point I'd be interested.

It's got to be in your save games documents, in your documents folder

Around about here looks like a good place to start

WARNING

I have never tried editing these files mid patrol, nor do I know what each line of the document does.
So mess with it at your peril :D

PS
If you manage to do it, please let us know
