Hi everyone, hope you all okay. Just got a laptop with Windows 7 as the operating system on it. Have installed SH3 but when I try and run it get an error message saying that it can only run on Windows 95/NT etc. Have attempted to use the compatability options but still no joy. Anyone got an idea ?

Please right-click the SH3.exe in the game directory and check the details tab for the version. If it reads 1.4.0.0 it is unpatched and may be 'star forced' (protection system for XP and previous).

If it reads 1.4.0.1 it is patched. If you didn't patch it yourself, you are fine and there is no disfunctional protection system installed.

Please report.

:timeout: Don't try to patch anything, just check the version of the SH3.exe.

Do you install from DVD or Steam?

Hey there Mittel and Black. Thanks to both of you for responding. Have downloaded and installed the European patch V1.4 for the DVD I have direct from the Ubisoft website. Still getting the same error message. Have again checked the compatability tab under Ubisoft programs, when I click on the details tab it does not say what version it is. Perhaps SH3 will not run on Windows 7 ?

it should tell you when you hover your mouse pointer over the SH3 exe
it worked on my Windows 7 System before upgrading Win 10
but my version of SH3 DVD is the already patched version with no starforce protection

Hi SP
Right click with your mouse on the SH3.exe application.
Open the Details Tab at the top.
Look at the product version.
See picture.
https://s31.postimg.org/bcwch52q3/SH3_exe.jpg

Starforce Free Version.
The dvd you are looking for will be showing ESS632.
The Starforce Free Version will be Black at the Bottom and White at the Top.
A typical File Version showing in Properties is 8.2.160.0
Product Version 1.4.0000
Date modified 18/08/2006
Do not be misled by the silver band at the top of the Dvd case that says Games in white letters which is irrelevant.

The Starforce Version will be Black at the Bottom and Silver at the Top.
These have a Product Version showing in Properties of 1.00.0000
This version does not have the latest patch and has copy write protection.

Run your applications in an Administrator mode including JSGME.
There is no reason why running Windows 7 should give you any problems.
You should not need to run it in a compatibility mode.
It is also important that you check that your Gpu drivers are up to date and you are using the latest versions.

No pain at all, Herr Kaleun!

SH3 runs fine on Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit).
If you have bought the DVD recently, you won't have the star force protection. Excellent!

Deinstall the game!

Then Reinstall - but not into the default path! (ProgramData - or ProgramData (x86))
Use C:\games\ - or whatever you prefer.

Should work fine now! I had no compatibility problems at all.
If necessary, set compatibility to Windows XP.

The correct path will let you use your game without Windows folder protection (UAC) interfering with it. You may want to install a few mods later.

Install direct into C:\ and update with patch and not programmes. I then Downloaded LSH3 (found in SHIII workshop). installed it (follow instructions exactly)Then create and go into Shortcut ,properties, make it compatible for Win 7 and also run as Adminiistrator.
Then I installed Grey Wolves after trying the LSH3

Thaty runs ok. on your Win 7 that's what I did.

you can get the steam version for a few bucks.. I got a vanilla version of steam's silent hunter 3 on my second hard disk. I don't remember exactly how to 'decouple' silent hunter 3 from steam anymore, though. I think I either used h.sie's patch or that other tool which allows you to create multiple copies of the game.

theoretically, i could upload the 2.43 GB vanilla version to mediafire for you to download :O:

edit:
As long as you use h.sie's patch you can uninstall steam once you got sh3 on your hard disk..

Hey all and many thanks for your help. Finally got it going using LSH3 ! Only problem now is I cant unzip GWX3 and SH3 Commander for some reason using NCH express zip. Though it has unzipped other files such as All Weather Guns no problem. Could this be because the files are so large or maybe a memory problem ?

Anyway, thank you all very much for your help, you are all top people.

Get you 7zip - http://www.7-zip.org/download.html - and you will open pretty much everything 'zippy'.

Be careful with downloading from NCH - they deliver often more than wanted.

... but of course you can run both mods parallel in a multi-mod installation.

There are GWX3.0 CFG files for SH3 Commander. You must use those for SH3CMdr to run correctly.
