Against the backdrop of the current Stanley cup best of seven series which showcases the best 2 teams in professional hockey vying for the Stanley cup , the professional hockey world is mourning the loss of one of it's own. Gordie Howe was well and truly an ambassador of the game and one of it's most beloved characters. Mr Gordie Howe passed away today at the age of 88. Mr. Howe was also widely known as " Mr. Hockey "

Gordie was a Canadian player who played 26 seasons in the National Hockey League and six seasons in the World Hockey League. His first 25 seasons were spent with the Detroit Red Wings.

Quote : He ranked among the top ten in league scoring for 21 consecutive years, and set a league record for points in a season (95) in 1953. Howe won the Stanley Cup (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Cup) with the Red Wings four times, won six Hart Trophies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hart_Memorial_Trophy) as the league's most valuable player, and won six Art Ross Trophies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_Ross_Trophy) as the leading scorer.

Howe is considered one of the greatest ice hockey players of all time.
A 23-time NHL All-Star (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHL_All-Star_Game), Howe held many of the sport's scoring records until they were broken in the 1990s by Wayne Gretzky (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Gretzky). Howe continues to hold (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_career_achievements_by_Gordie_Howe) NHL records for most games and seasons played.

Keep in mind that for much of the time Gordie played, he never wore a helmet. When Gordie was asked about not wearing a helmet and how dangerous that was, Gordie replied tongue in cheek " it's okay, you can always find someone to do your thinking for you " .

Gordie was also blessed with being ambidextrous and was able to use a straight stick and shoot equally well, left or right and was a gifted right winger.

Quote:
On April 10, 2007, Howe was honoured with the unveiling of a new bronze statue in Joe Louis Arena (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Louis_Arena). The statue is 12-feet tall and weighs about 4,500 pounds. The man who was commissioned to create the art was Omri Amrany. The statue contains all of Howe's stats and history. Another statue of Howe was erected in downtown Saskatoon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saskatoon), Saskatchewan, on the corner of 20th Street and 1st Ave. He is depicted wearing a Detroit Red Wings sweater The statue has since been relocated to the SaskTel Centre (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SaskTel_Centre).

Gordie Howe is also widely regarded as the greatest Hockey player, even with the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux and others in the mix.

In a world of overpaid , pampered , prima dona athletes, Gordie was widely regarded as incredible and a complete gentleman. Gordie was humble, appreciative and modest

It's sad and somewhat fitting that we say goodbye to a Hockey great while the Stanley Cup of 2016 is being played out.

Goodbye Mr. Howe and thanks for the great Hockey.

Rest in peace.

1946 to 1980, Howe played twenty-six seasons in the National Hockey League (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hockey_League) (NHL) and six seasons in the World Hockey Association (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Hockey_Association) (WHA) As an old Minnesota hockey player since age three (my dad made me do it :nope:-he played on a champion '30's New York school team:timeout:) Gordie Howe,http://www.gordiehowe.com/images/home.jpg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gordie_Howe_Chex_card.jpg) "Rocket' Richard,https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/35/Richard_sculpture.JPG and Bobby Orrhttps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9e/Bobby_Orr_in_mid-air_%281970%29.jpg were my heroes! In ice hockey (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_hockey), a Gordie Howe Hat Trick is a variation on the hat-trick, wherein a player scores a goal, records an assist, and gets in a fight all in one game. It is named after Gordie Howe, well known for his skill at both scoring and fighting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordie_Howe_hat_trick (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordie_Howe_hat_trick) Phil Esposito came in a close fourth for the religious aspect though:O::https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/2d/7a/d5/2d7ad5d605848afe2ce08200d9e4e9fa.jpg "JESUS SAVES! and Esposito scores on the rebound"

Wow. First Ali and now Mr. Hockey.

Gordie Howe was the complete package on the ice. Leadership, goal scoring and toughness. Off the ice he was humble and a great ambassador for the game.

R.I.P. Gord. Keep your head up and your stick on the ice.
