I found a hardcover copy of Richard O'Kane's Clear The Bridge at my local thrift store today for the princely sum of $1.99. The book was in shockingly good condition, and it looked like it hadn't been read before. I opened it up, and what did I see on the first page?

I'd be totally lying if I didn't start trembling right there in the middle of the store. I pretty much stopped shopping and made a beeline right for the checkout. Nobody was going to grab this treasure when I wasn't looking. To think, I now own the signature of the most successful American submarine captain of World War II, and it cost less than the price of an ice cream cone!

I picked up a two volume set of General John Pershings autobiography at a used book store. When I got home an envelope from the War Department fell out. Inside was this:

History is cool!

Sweet Find! I had my own cool find at a local pawn shop where I found a small collection of Chinese, Japanese and a Rupee note all from WW2 but this one stood out the most. (Sorry about the quality)

At least two or three of the names on there are from the Flying Tigers although 1st Lt. Joe T. Jordan is the only one that I can read that I've matched to the AVG roster and the other names are either members of the 23rd Fighter Group or from members of other units in the area.

Congratulations Subnuts, August and Kptlt. Neuerburg on your finds. :sunny:

It pays to look at yard sales and the like.

Cool finds, my pop's WW2 Ike jacket almost became a pawn shop find just yesterday. Very, very, very lucky for me the person that thought he was taking off with an empty cabinet realized what he had done and came back. My feral kitty will never again make fun of me for being lock happy, and she will be lock happy from now on too. :yeah: Win, win!

Since

A. Far too many people ain't reading that much any more
B. Far too many people ain't reading physical books any more

I think that haunting thrift stores for books will be a good strategy :yeah:

Unfortunately, I can't do this as I don't have the room for the books I already have. Me in a used book store is alike an alcoholic in a bar. It is a disease... a great disease but a disease. :D
