How do you promote your crew and get new and better crew members? I am on my third patrol and all I have been able to do so far is hand out medals. Can you spend renown on crew?

Ahoy Captain,

When you return to port after a mission, you can promote crew where you give out the medals. The tab in the middle just right of the medals. If they are eligible, they will be promoted. Just drag the stripes over the picture of the sailor you want to promote. If you have to many in sailors on the ship that are at or above CPO, no one can be promoted until someone is removed from the boat. To remove, click on the icon of the sailor and drag him to the left. You can also use renown to get sailors. Click on the candidates on the left of the screen to see how much, if any they cost. Hope this helps to answer your questions!

I do get a voice message that tells me that I have too many officers. What is the limit? Is there a way to increase this limit? Is it better to hold onto the crew you have or fire them and try and find a new crew member with better stats.

I have trouble with promotions and medals. Have never been able to promote because I get the max message. Never can seem to get medals to the right guy.

Went over the stats of my crew everyone seems ok except I have to say my Deck Watch is terrible. Only the first position has any good skills at all. All the rest are in the 30s and 40s. Going to fire all of them, next time I make port.

Highlight the crew member you want to decorate then drag the medal over to him. That works for me.

I get rid of Special Ability crewmen unless they are needed in a mod, and then I can promote or recruit other good crewmen. Some of the Special Abilities are pretty crazy imo.

Happy Hunting!

Don't fire them. It costs renown to get the better crew members. As you do patrols, and have more activities, the crew members improve on skill. I'll start with crew members that have 10 or 15 at a skill, and after 3 or 4 patrols, they'll have 50 or more skill level.

I usually get a mod, drawing a blank which one I'm using, that removes the limit for officers and NCOs, I don't abuse it with tons of officers, but it does help get a nicely balanced and more realistic crew.

Why not I have nothing else to spend renown on? Upgrades are cheap in comparison to the about of renown I have.

Isn't a 50 skill level rather poor? Most of my good crew members have 80-105 skill level in their primary skill catagory.

Yes, you are correct. I'm using that as an example of how skill level improves with a crew member's number of patrols and activity.
