Sampans. Do I sink them or not:06:? I did not see, after a quick search, any threads on sampans. I may have missed it, it was a very quick search. My inclination would be to leave them alone, it would be a waste of ammo. But I have heard rumors that they are like pickets, so unless I want an ASW group after me:dead:, take them out:arrgh!:. That was not my experience in SH1, but this is a different game. I never knew what they were for in SH1 either.

sink them! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8VqVFxSBsU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8VqVFxSBsU) USS Blenny (Baleo Class): Between 10 November 1944 and 14 August 1945 Blenny conducted four war patrols in the Java (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_Sea) and South China Seas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_China_Sea). Blenny sank eight Japanese (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan) vessels totaling 18,262 tons. In addition, she is credited with destroying more than 62 miscellaneous Japanese small craft by gunfire, (Sampans)

Every sampan that you sink means less cargo going somewhere. Every fishing boat you sink means less food for the enemy. Every ship that can't report a submarine makes it that much likelier that our torpedoes will reach a convoy. Every weather report the Empire misses means less effective air patrols. Every boat not radioing in an air raid warning makes our boys in the B-29s that much safer. Everything you sink means you shorten the war, even if only a little bit.

The 40mm bofors tear up sampans nicely. Or you could full ahead ramming speed!

They are the only legitimate use of a deck gun, 40mm or 20mm. So I say sink 'em to keep the gun crews happy.

Does the game actually take that into effect in the progress of the war?

Ummm...What about anti-aircraft?

No, it's just role-playing for immersion.

Yeah you shouldn't be messing with planes if it can be avoided, which it can in the vast majority of cases. You should be hiding from them.

Planes are very fast, extremely maneuverable and therefore difficult to hit. You on the other hand are so slow that you can be considered by the pilot to be a stationary target.

It's worse than that. You have an expensive, difficult to replace submarine full of 80 or so highly trained men. The plane is cheap, they manufacture them by the hundreds and there are one or two men in them.

You have almost nothing to gain and much to lose when you engage aircraft. Don't do it.

Right, not like I make a point to engage aircraft. There may be times, though, when I am caught on the surface, say to recharge my batteries or make repairs. Does this game have the issue with chlorine gas if the batteries are damaged?

If it does, it's been well hidden for the last nine years. I haven't seen that since the original Silent Hunter.

As annoying as that was, it was at least realistic.

Very much so. I think the team that programmed SH4 should have played a lot of SH1 and Aces of the Deep. There was a lot there that they could have included that would make SH4 a more complete game.

"Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"

Sampans aren't worthy of the steel being flung at them, just run 'em over.

Although I did torpedo on once just for fun. It just disappeared.
