View Full Version : Arma 3 - Eden editor
I'm sure you all already know about this, but it was a major surprise to me. I bought the game ages ago but never really got into it due to my old computer not having enough grunt. Just got around to installing it on my new system (6700k OC'd to 4.8 gz - 16 gig ram and GTX 980 Ti - an utter beast!) and at long last there is a proper, functioning 3d Editor for the game!
I've been wanting a 3d editor since the very first Op Flashpoint way back in the depths of the past. I know there was a way to sort of do it in Arma 2, but I could never get it to work right. This is great, though, and it's totally going to change the way I enjoy my favourite part of the game - which is scenario editing.
Any of you Arma players got recommendations for decent mods? Particularly interested in new islands and units - wouldn't mind some UK forces if any one knows any good ones!

I had given the Eden editor a go when it came out and it was so easy to use, it was a bit like using Zeus in Arma 3 (it's more of an on the fly scenario editor but it's funtionality was similar.), as for UK forces have a look at this mod over on Armaholic. http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=27201 There are two more mods that go with it, weapons and vehicles respectively to make a complete mod. I've got those mods along with a ton of others which I've used, one mod I would really recommend is the ASR AI3 mod which makes a lot of changes to how the AI respond to make it more realistic.
I believe that the CUP mod has begun putting modern UK units from ARMA2 over into A3. Other ports/improvements of A2 units come from Red Hammer Studios, they've got a lot of US and Russian stuff.
If you're into tanks, then the Burnes Armouries Abrams and Challenger tanks are worth a look, featuring interiors and some nice touches, but they will eat your FPS a bit, but if you've got an upgraded system then you should be golden.
Going back in time a bit, there's the African Conflict modpack, that's a nice little pack, and goes well with the Isla Duala map. Or if you fancy something a bit colder then Helvantis is another really well made map, just don't set the windspeed up too high or the trees will look like they're in a mosh pit.
Coming back to Blighty, there's the Smill 1970s uniforms mod which I happen to like quite a lot, and the British Beret modifications go well with it, and just recently Raptor pointed me in the direction of a 'Isla Malvinas' map which has been released on Steam and withsix, so you can go for that 1982 feeling a bit easier now, although there are still a fair few things missing, primarily air and naval wise.
The 'Alive' modpack is useful for generating missions on the fly, I don't really know the ins and outs of it, Raptor is the one to ask that of, and of course the ACE3 module makes for a good base plate to give that extra bit of realism to the whole thing.
Enjoy! :yeah:

The Community Upgrade Project and RHS are a pretty good place to start. The former has most or all of the units, weapons and terrains from ArmA 1 and 2, including the British units, while the latter has US and Russian forces in rather high quality (especially the Russian stuff). A lot of maps rely on the CUP Terrain pack to work, and I hear you can even use other ArmA 1 and 2 maps with it, so that's another reason to use that. If you want extra weapons, the HLC (or is it NIArms now?) packs are of very high quality.
As far as mod maps go, the aforementioned Isla Duala and Helvantis are quite good for African and European winter scenarios, respectively, especially since these settings aren't really covered by the stock maps. The other maps by the person that made Duala (Panthera, Lingor and Abramia) also look quite good, but I haven't tried them myself yet. Bornholm is another good European map, though it can be a bit heavy.
As Oberon says, ALiVE is really useful for quickly setting up dynamic missions, though it can be difficult to control with a lot of precision. ACE3 is pretty good for introducing a bit more depth to the medical system and various other aspects, and is thankfully not nearly as clunky as ACE2 was.

CBA
ACE
RHS (AFRF + USAF)
TFAR or ACRE
TRYK

These are what I personally consider 'essentials', though RHS is debatable.
Without them, I wouldn't even touch Arma.
This is my current list:

I am too lazy to write them all down, but if you google the abbreviations, you'll find out the exact mod.
All but '@gc' are available, that one is my units private mod with some fixes, extra gear and uniforms etc.
For UK Forces, as others mentioned, CUP should be what you're looking for.
I grabbed all the CUB stuff, plus about a million other things. Still need to get a Chally mod (hopefully a scimitar too) but I think I'm about up to where I wanted to be. Could do with some decent boats as well, come to think of it. Rolling in stuff now. There was a brilliant mod for Arma2 - tier1 operators or something, but can't seem to find it for Arma3 which is a shame. Still, the new method of configuring load outs (which is excellent) should allow me to cook up some pretty cool stuff.
My mod folder is going to be about 300 gig by the end of this. Just need to start dusting off my scripting skills again....not looking forward to that bit! :D
Thanks everyone - Lot of great advice. Nice to see StalkerGB is still doing his Brit forces stuff. They were great in Arma2.
One more question - does everyone just use Steam workshop nowadays or is it still worth checking out Armaholics?

Other way around.
The workshop can be buggy and cause a lot of problems, also it updates stuff automatically, which can be a problem when playing in groups.
Armaholic is still the way to go. They had severe problems with their servers for a while, but it is alright now.
Fetch Arma3Sync to manage your mods and you got all you need, in my opinion.
That's a bit of a shame. Steam Workshop is something I really, really like. Never mind. Amarholics is a great resource. I don't play multiplayer anyway so I'm no too worried.
Cheers.
Lol, I've just rediscovered how more-ish Arma mods are, especially with the new armoury thing and customizable gear. It's eaten a huge swathe of space on my SSD. Might have to reinstall it on my other drive before I run out of room.
