View Full Version : New at SHIII in...2016. Observations after 300hrs
Just a note to say thanks to all of those on this forum that came before me as I am partially a product of your knowledge with all the how-to stuff.
Haven't done any gaming in many years. I am a very good generalist on WWII.
Good with the history of the Atlantic War.
I just started playing SHIII a few months ago. Setup is Windows 10 and playing SHIII via Steam. No frill setup except for fatigue being reduced in config file. Am totally OK with this game in its stock form for enjoyment.
Like:
1. Mostly everything. For (2005?) and now 2016, this game still holds huge value and enjoyment.
2. Love the math. Now running my patrols at 100 percent realism.
3. 3 minute 15 second rule helps so much in setting up an attack.
4. Goes well with uboat.net where you also celebrate, so to speak, your bad events: a fair amount of torpedo expenditure to sink a ship. Those days happen. I make mistakes. The other days happen with a well setup shot.
5. A wonderful gaming experience. Will probably play this game forever.
Minor criticism:
1. Warrant Officer / Petty Officer labeling goof up. Hard to figure that.
2. Fatigue as mentioned in stock form is unacceptable. Would prefer if there was proper crew management, to setup a roster for 1st and 2nd watch.
Other:
One fun 'bug'. Before docking, always go to normal time for a bit. Have done this in accelerated time and sometimes doesn't give you tonnage credit.
Other than that, the game, for what it is ( a product of its day ) is a shocker.
In over 30 years of computer games, I would say that years ago, Half-Life 2 totally blew me away. SHIII is up there for me and it is something I will put in much more time...
Again, thanks for everyone's efforts.

Welcome aboard! :sunny:
Any of the good supermods will put you into a whole new world. You can't imagine all the things you still have to discover. Once you leave the stock game you'll never go back.
1. Yes it does. I've been playing it since the beginning. Well, actually I've been experimenting with it from the beginning. I doubt I have many more hours on it than you do.
2. I'm terrible at math. I've never played at 100%. Oh, and a piece of advice: You can't steer with the engines, so if your rudder is destroyed you can't get home. If you play at 99% you can use the available teleport function to do that.
3. You've got me there. As I said, my math sucks.
4. My notes in our '100 Years Ago Today' thread in General Topics largely come from U-boat.net. It is one of several valuable resources we discuss from time to time.
5. Same here, though in eleven years I've never completed a career...except of course for the ones that ended badly.
1. Also Command/Control room.
2. Hasn't been done yet. There is, however, SH3 Commander, an external tool that lets you control many game functions with a single click, including removing fatigue entirely. Not realistic, but more so than what we have now.
One fun 'bug'. Before docking, always go to normal time for a bit. Have done this in accelerated time and sometimes doesn't give you tonnage credit.
My preferred supermod is GWX. I always sail out from and into the harbors in regular time, just looking at all the ships, the dockside activities, the planes flying overhead...
Keep enjoying it. I do.

Hello!
Thank you for sharing your experience.
4. Goes well with uboat.net where you also celebrate, so to speak, your bad events: a fair amount of torpedo expenditure to sink a ship.
What do you mean ?
Once you leave the stock game you'll never go back.
Exactly. When you discover supermods, the stock game is just a shame ! :hmph:
[QUOTE=Fahnenbohn;2398076]Hello!
Thank you for sharing your experience.
What do you mean ?
Hi Fahnenbohn,
Oh, just when you read an actual historical U-boat attack, sometimes they had some odd/bad days too where it took more than a few torpedoes to sink a ship. And sometimes... missing...twice...
So for me, my goof-ups and/or bad fortune add to the story.
In the game it doesn't bother me.
Some days you are right-on and a C3 cargo ship is hit well and goes down with one. Other days you watch and see the stop watch go by and.... nothing happens .... :shifty: 1+1=3 ?

Welcome Aboard Leoz :salute:
This is just an update. Now at about 460 hours of playtime. (Side note... I do have a life ...no...really :) )
Still.
An...
...amazing game.
Just put in the Grey Wolves version 3.0 yesterday.
Stunning.
My setup is a generic (vanilla Windows 10 install on a 4 year old 4Gb RAM, 1Tb hard drive, 27 inch monitor). Nothing too flashy. SHIII is via Steam. GW3 install was pushed into this no trouble (I don't have any other expansion needs).
Love the new ships, graphics and attention to detail; extreme attention to detail.... I like playing in my doll house so-to-speak so it is good GW got the enlisted force squared away with the crew.
Again thanks to all of those that came before me who put so much effort into making this game so very good and enjoyable.
My realism settings-only the event camera is available. (note: the following should go in the "what are you doing lately in SHIII?" area but only put here this time to add to the spirit of the post).
Currently running a VIIB out of St Nazaire (October 1940) on my first GW3 patrol. On the way down to the west cost of Africa. One sector away from my assignment and picked up a north-bound convoy... in the morning 600am local. Nice weather although 2-3M waves and a good wind. 1940 so slim on escorts (2 corvettes). Approached from the NE corner surfaced. then submerged. Nice diagonal approach to setup (again....wow look at the new ships in the game!)...... where is that lead escort? Off the starboard beam; heeling over in a starboard turn having spotted a periscope splash no doubt at about 1800M.
Crash dive under the convoy heading SW then S. Some water bombs but not close. Lose them; south of the convoy. Come back up. surface 45 minutes later. Approach from the south at high speed. Creep up to the SE end keeping the tail-end corvette 6000M or more away.....
Now about Currently 1145am local, 7000M in parallel on the east end of the convoy.
Reporting in and getting good radio reports back from BDU of the notifications.
Have observed a victim I want for a night time attack. This stuff with the convoy end-rounds I usually save in places and it can take me several sit-downs over a week (our time not game time) with multiple saves... I have time rushed these things before and have come off worse for it (oops they changed course when I end-rounded out of sight...). This is an exception not a rule...I do use the time speed up control!
While I bring a lot to this party, again, it is all of you that provided this.

My realism settings-only the event camera is available.
I'm just the opposite. I keep the External View on, because I like to look at the sights when I'm crossing the harbors. I never use the event camera because, well, I just don't like it.
But that's just me. :sunny:
