Can I get a recommendation for supermods and other mods to install? I was running GWX 3.0 on SH3 and really enjoyed it.

I would start out with Webster's Game Fixes Only supermod. The mechanics of the American and German submarines are so different that you'll have enough trouble getting the differences sorted out in your brain that you don't really want tactical difficulty.

Once you have grokked the mysteries of the position keeper and internalized all the value added features (that means maddening differennces) on the American sub, as a GWXer, you'll want some strategic difficulty, so your prescription is a full dose of Trigger Maru Overhauled. That should fix you right up.

Now there is a campaign mod, Run Silent Run Deep, which seeks to send every Japanese ship on the exact trips it made during the war. It works well, it's just that if the Japanese sent a convoy out of that port at that time, it will be coming along whether you've just appeared outside the harbor or if you've already sunk a dozen ships in the past 2 weeks.

In the real war there is example after example of the Japanese rerouting shipping because subs were detected. For that reason, because you can really game the "historical" system, I prefer the random encounter campaign of the stock game. Trigger Maru Overhauled has a truly excellent amped-up random encounter campaign that I really enjoy.
