My windows 10 crashed awhile back, so I had to do a fresh install of windows 10 64-bit. Then the fun of reinstalling all my programs. When I reinstalled my sh4 and went to activate it. I got the message the number was already used. I've tried to contact Ubisoft support, but haven't got any response. I've even asked a 2nd time, but still nothing. Is that still the place to get help? I've got my cd-key, my U-boat missions key. I haven't tried sh3 to see if it will work. Just trying to get sh4 to work first.

I've had to get keys three times for similar computer crashes. I'd be persistent. Two of three times the process was easy, the first and the last. The middle time there were delays like yours. Now it wasn't SH4 itself that I had trouble with, it was the lousy one-time key for the download version of U-boat Missions.

What I have done is make a complete copy of SH4. After you install, slide in JSGME, MultiSH4 and the like, but before you actually install any mods, copy the entire \Wolves of the Pacific directory to a remote hard drive of flash card. Call it \SH4 Pristeen or something. Write protect that puppy so you NEVER modify any files.

Now when you get mod soup, all you have to do is uninstall you mods, delete everything but the MODS directory of your \Wolves of the Pacific folder, copy the whole shebang from \SH4 Pristeen, write enable all files that are in \Wolves of the Pacific, reenable all mods and continue playing as if nothing happened.

I don't think this works if you've had to wipe your system and reinstall windows as the registry is not the same and your key is lost. However, the key is in your registry. If you could find the lines relating to SH4 and copy them to a file on that remote storage location, you could restore them to your registry after a reinstall, making your SH4 Pristeen work then too!

Of course if you don't want to bother with all that the solution is to buy yourself a copy of SH4 Gold on DVD, which would include the copy of U-Boat Missions that you have already bought.

...Or buy it on Steam and never again worry about the keys... just re-download it after rebuilding your system.

edit> I'm not having any issues with Mod/Steam compatibility either... My Steam is NOT installed in C:/Program Files either.

Just make sure you buy U-boat Missions, not just Plain Jane SH4. If it's cheaper you can also buy the DVD, install it and then import it into Steam. That also gives you download rights through Steam. Might be your most cost effective way.

I bought mine Direct2Drive - who would have thought that they would go out of business - ha!

I do what RRobbins said, I have a clean install that I don't play and use Multi SH4.

The only time I had to re-install is when I got a new computer. Funny thing was Direct2Drive just re-activated my very same activation code....... strange.

I bought a copy of SH4 Gold for the 'next time' - but haven't used it yet.

I looked at the sh4 with U-boat missions In steam. Pretty cheap, I also saw for $39.95 you get sh3 sh4/U-boat missions and sh5. But there were some bad reviews, that gave it 1 star. It was about bugs in the steam games. Also Direct2drive is still there. I just went there and my account is still active.

I'm not a big Steam fan so I didn't go that route myself. I had activation issues as well and finally got sick of it and bought the Gold edition for $5.99 somewhere, which didn't need activation.

RR advice is a good one. I play on a Surface Pro 4 and keep all my games on a MicroSSD card. Even the slower 60mbs cards will work fine. I have a vanilla copy and specific MOD copies. 128mb card will keep a lot of SH4/SH3 data.

I also have an external drive that has a copy of all my MOD setups. Since for me the nature of Windows is a cascading performance headache I sometimes have to reset my device to factory defaults and start over. When I do getting SH4 up and running is quite easy.

Just my 2c here.
