Recently, I've been wondering about the meals that got served on US Fleet Boats. How long was the food supply intended to last (assuming that the sub wasn't carrying any extra guests like downed airmen), and what kind of meals were considered the norm?

I'm not sure exactly what kind of meals were served on the fleet boats when they were on patrol but I know they carried enough supplies for patrols lasting up to 60 days. The fleet boats usually had a crew complement of 65 to 80 men.

The meals were like any other type of meal one would get at home. Meat, vegetable and starch. Often bread was baked if not daily. Some crews were clever and rigged up ice cream making machines.

But....the food for the crew was touted to be best.

that American submariners "had the best of everything and would never have tolerated substandard conditions."
