View Full Version : Worlds blackest material is now paintable
This is amazing!
The conventional form of Vantablack is made up of a forest of light-absorbing carbon nanotubes, and is applied to surfaces via a chemical vapour deposition process. Once in place, it traps 99.965 percent of incoming light – that's enough to make three-dimensional objects which are coated in it appear as two-dimensional voids, across a wide range of viewing angles. The new version, known as Vantablack S-VIS, is almost as good – it traps 99.8 percent of ultraviolet, visible and infrared light. According to Surrey Nanosystems, that's 17 times less reflective than the super-black paint used in the Hubble telescope.

Interesting. At first I thought you meant it could be painted onto. :shucks:

It is indeed paintable onto other objects.
Now, in order to expand its possible applications, the material is available in a convenient spray-on form.
No military application yet?:o
Aren't army jerks usually the first to make use of every new invention?

I am going to paint a wall with it and then glue glitter at random places and pretend I'm at the Enterprise observation deck

Isn't that just the sensible thing to do?
Presumably August will use it to get cotton wool to look like smoke for his model trains.
I'll be using it to make sure all the black things in my house are properly black, not the crappy pseudo-black stuff that you get these days. I mean, my chair legs aren't black, they're just super extremely very dark grey :nope:

Paint a circle and claim to be the first to own a black hole.

Army "jerks"?

Or you can pretend you're in 2001 "It's full of STARS!" :o:)
BTW this 90 seconds time constraint between posts bites the bit one.

What a nerd

Australians sometimes call military personel A.J:s(Army Jerk)
Sure I'm not an aussie my self, but I like that expression anyway.:)
...I want to add that I've been an A.J. myself too, and I'm not ashamed about it.

I have seen some experiments with this stuff. Sometimes it can really mess with your perception . In some circumstances it turns a three dimensional object into one that can only be perceived in two dimensions.

You shouldn't be, as after all the Army IS the best of the services. :yep:

Just a part of the majority on Subsim :03:
Forget walls, I'm going to paint sinkholes on the road during night time :Kaleun_Salivating:
