Hello everyone. I'm new to subsim.com and I have a few questions about improving my time in SH4.
I got into the series with Silent Hunter (1) and had a great time in it. Somehow I missed 2 and 3 but got back to the series with 4. I played SH4 for years when it came out and then forgot about it. I was going through an old laptop i have and found it again and decided to get back into it. I no longer have the disk but I was able to move the game to my desktop with a flash drive and it seems to work fine.
I'm pretty sure I have just the vanilla version with no patches or the U-boat missions. Am I able to patch my game even though I do not have the disk?
I'm also thinking about trying some mods but looking for some suggestions. I like playing realistic so I'm not looking for mods like the nuke deck gun or things like that.
Thank you for your help.

Your best bet is just to buy a copy of SH4 Gold Edition, which includes all the patches and U-Boat Missions (which is patch 1.5). It will cost you about $10 but it's the only way to get everything you need, as 1.5 is a paid patch in effect.

Agreed, you're best bet is to get SH4 Gold. You can find it online pretty cheap. You'll need to be at version 1.5 to get the better mods and SH4 Gold will get you there.
That said, I didn't need the disc to install mods. I did need the JGSME (?) program but you can easily find it. It's the mod enabler and the big mods are made for it. Also, I don't need the disc to run my legitimate copy of SH4 so once it was installed the disc went back in the box where it safely remains.
I'm also into realism and selected my mods accordingly. Here's what I'm running.
Real Fleet Boat
RFB patch
Run Silent Run Deep Campaign
RSRDC patch
Improved Ship Physics 2.8
ISP 2.8 severe weather patch
I really like these mods. But there are others who go the Trigger Maru route and they seem to enjoy TMO as much as I enjoy RFB. I guess you can't really go wrong with either of them. But do get one of the big mods. It dramatically improves gameplay and you won't regret installing them.
And do get ISP for whichever big mod you choose. When I first started using Improved Ship Physics I felt like I had left the merchant marines and joined the navy. Ship handling, and the actions of the enemy ships, are improved so much that I don't think I could go back to vanilla ship characteristics.
ISP. Don't leave port without it!!
Welcome back to Silent Hunter. I hope you find the mods you like and have a good time with them.

I've been looking around for the gold edition for $10 like you said but haven't seen anything under $20. Just wondering if I had missed it somewhere? I use Steam and saw they have SH4 and the U-Boat missions as seperate games, so if i buy both would that work?

no you didn't miss anything. for a while it was $10 and so was the v1.5 ad-on so it made no sense not to buy the gold version download for the same $10 price.
now the gold version download costs are doubled but its still smarter to buy the gold version and get it all in one. just burn the download to a disk to save it safe and secure.
shop around and you can find sh4 gold download for an average of $20 but unfortunately if you want it on an actual hard disk, its an incredible $50 to buy it today.
here is a $20 download link I found for the game: http://www.amazon.com/Silent-Hunter-Pacific-Edition-Download/dp/B008X73CE8
if I were buying it today I would buy this used one for $24 after confirming its an "official" sh4 gold edition game cd from ubisoft http://www.ebay.com/itm/Silent-Hunter-Wolves-of-the-Pacific-Gold-Edition-PC-by-Ubisoft-/301884087796?hash=item4649b19df4:m:m3WQqNb-F3omMx3AyU_BthA

In the SH4 directory there is an auto-patcher called gu.exe
EDIT: Oh, you meant patch to add U-Boat expansion. It won't do that. You could give it a shot and see what it does.

If I buy SH4 and the U-Boat missions on Steam, is that the same as buying the gold edition somewhere else?

Hope I'm not too late but I picked up SH4 Gold for $20 cheaper on Gamersgate compared to Steams $40 for both game and U-boat missions.
