The bottle of sparkling wine did not break on the first time. Superstition is that the boat will be unlucky.

Perhaps if we all send out best wishes, we can give the boat and her crew better luck. :salute:

I wonder why they don't take precautions to ensure that the bottle breaks on the first time. Perhaps that, in itself, would be superstitious?

Maybe we need to go back to the older tradition of christening new vessels by pouring significant water over the bow?

Best of luck to the crew of the USS Washington.

BAe at Barrow use a bottle of beer rather than champers, I'm not sure if it bounced on Astute, but she certainly had her run of bad luck, ran aground in broad daylight during sea trials in 2010 where all and sundry could photograph her, then had an Able-Seaman go on a rampage with an SA-80, killing the weapons officer and injuring another officer, and then in 2012 she had a major leak and had to perform an emergancy surface.
However, once she sorted out those problems, which I guess are traditional for a lead ship of a class, she's made a good name for herself, giving the USS New Mexico a hard time during trials in Feburary 2012.
So, I'm sure the Washington will do fine.
