How to get widescreen working?

Hey guys, I've been trying to get Silent Hunter III working in widescreen. My SHIII is Steam with GWX. I've installed Ahnenerbe's 1920x1080 mod, and edited the main.cfg file to be in 1920x1080 fullscreen, but whenever I start up SHIII, it's in 1024x768 windowed, and I get the 'Silent Hunter III has stopped working' message.

Sorry, no clue here. I tried a widescreen mod once years ago, and didn't like it. I get along just fine without it. :sunny:

You don't have to edit any cfg files to get it to work in widescreen. Your mod is most likely installed in the wrong place.

Your MODS folder, jsgme.exe and jsgme.ini should be in the SH3 root folder in your steamapps folder. Then inside your MODS folder should be a folder for the widescreen mod, and inside that one, you should have a Data folder and some other files including a dll and some configuration files.

Then enable the mod in JSGME. That's all you need to do.

Just going by what has always worked for me. I've been installing games and mods into my Program Files folders for probably 15 years now. I've never had a problem with mods in any game, and I always ignore all the warnings about not putting stuff into Program Files because it's just nonsense that started with Vista and it's overzealous UAC. There are no good reasons to not install games or mods in there. Steam installs to Program Files by default. All my games are in there, SH3 Commander is in there, my other mod utilities for other games are in there, all work without a hitch. Don't even need to run any compatibility modes, except for sh3.exe.

As long as UAC is off and you have admin rights, there won't be any problems.

I understand why mod developers put in the warnings on their installers, because not everybody knows about UAC or how to turn it off.

I just think people should know that installing games into your Program Files folders is not an issue. I see far too many baseless warnings against it.

As far as other warnings are concerned, I would never tell anyone to ignore them.

S3F seems really cool, I will definitely check it out.

But on the other hand MOST users are afraid to do what experienced users usually do. And that's the main reason why programmers must keep in mind these over-cautious noobs, who like to be treated like a baby by Vista's "overzealous UAC".

Hmmm... maybe you're right. From my experience most users are experienced enough to know this stuff, but maybe I haven't been around many who are not comfortable with working on a PC. Will think more about it.

I still hate UAC and my crusade to make everyone turn it off continues :p
