Beer Name: Saratoga Oatmeal Stout
Brewer & Location: Olde Saratoga Brewing Company, Saratoga Springs, NY
http://www.monthlyclubs.com/media/catalog/product/cache/12/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/s/a/saratoga-oatmeal-stout.jpg
Eye: Inky, Jet black, with a thick but not persistent khaki/tan head
Nose: notes of caramel and chocolate, "hoppy", light
Flavor: Smokey, Smooth, very creamy but not heavy on the palate, Rich and complex, but balanced and not-overpowering. Notes of smokey caramel and dark chocolate
Comments: The Saratoga Oatmeal Stout is a truly noteworthy, exceptional stout out of New York, enjoyable, well flavored, it doesn't over power the drinker. A stout which is creamy and rich enough for experienced stout drinkers to respect, but soft enough for the novice to enjoy.

I have a question about beer and all of the different kinds of beer, ale, etc.
what if you have a place where people eat that offers all kinds of beer local, regional, USA, Canada and Mexico and imports beer by the case from England, Germany etc by the case now and very few of your customers ever purchase the beer from overseas.
Got me so far?
How long will the beer last in the back storage room in a dry dark area?

Generally in a situation like that a restaurant or bar will order very little of their least "popular" beers.
As with any food or drink, freshness is important, and beer is no different. Of course it depends on the beer and how it is bottled/canned and stored. a good rule of thumb would be that a cool dry place or refrigeration will hold a beer for anywhere between six months and a year.
restaurants are going to have the advantage of reviewing past sales data of course, so they are able then to order more of the beer that sells and less of the beer that doesnt.
it is best to keep it refrigerated, or in a storage area that is not subject to temperature changes. If for example your basement or store room holds a pretty constant average temperature without much fluctuation - that is the best storage conditions
EDIT: i will add, that beers with a higher % of alcohol content will shelf for longer periods of time than lite beers with a lower % of alcohol content.

I brew a beer at home. German pilsner, dark Munich and rye malts filtered through Juniper branches and berries. I've pitched Red Star fresh bakers yeast but that is becoming hard to find these days. Now I use and quite happy with Wyeast 1084. Though from what I understand the key to success is to use Finnish Bakers Yeast unfortunately its only found in Finland and its too damn expensive to ship and only keeps for a limited time.
Anyway, I dont add hops nor do I boil or pasteurize the wort. I just pitch the yeast and two weeks or so later I siphon straight from the pail 11% homebrew sahti. Since its not boiled all the wonderous healthy bacteria and protiens aren't killed off. Makes for a very healthy drunk... err, Im mean drink!
Next time I make it I'll post a pic.

U forgot the MOLAßIS ! http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/wp-content/uploads/gw_feature.jpg (http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/how-to-brew/george-washingtons-infamous-small-beer-recipe/) George Washington’s small beer recipe, as written in his diary:

Its called Sahti or in the case of 11% ABV Mighty Sahti anything less is for women, or so Ive been told, lol. Its a beer which has been around for a very longtime and yet there's really no set recipe to follow it varies from region to region. And instead of useing a hollowed out log as a mash tun and milk can. I use a 10 gallon igloo cooler with a false bottom, a six gallon glass carboy or plastic fermentation pail.
I get a nutty, fruity, banana, junipery un carbonated brew that sort of makes one euphoric rather than stumbling drunk. But then I've always been able to hold my liquor better than most :). Oh, and I do pasturize it when I bottle as a gift. otherwise I just siphon it straight into a snifter like the fellas in the below video do. good stuff I tellya.

"Wolf Rock", a red IPA (India Pale Ale) brewed by Sharp's of Cornwall, UK.
It's a rich dark red and smells deliciously of ROSES; this isn't printed on the label... it's what we smelled when we tried it.
It's powerfully malty + fruity; 4.8% ABV

Beautiful stout. Gorgeous to look at. At $8.00 (US) for a pint draw I originally thought it a bit pricey.
The first couple of sips pre-meal were nothing to write home about and i was disappointed. Then...
After 2 bites of our pepperoni/ham/italian sausage/bacon and pineapple pizza, the next pull from the glass, HOLEY MOLEY!!
The flavors exploded! The next 15 minutes of dining was one of the most pleasurable in my life, and the beer was the catalyst.

My wife found this in Asda (about £1.65) and it is WONDERFUL... strong (5 percent ABV) yet not cloying like a dark ale, or even most lagers. Much lighter and more refreshing, it claims to be dry but I detected a slight honey-sweetness. Beautiful!

I picked in the Kent hop-gardens as a kid and the smell of them is in my blood. I brought pieces of root with me when we moved to Lincolnshire over 30 years ago and it flourished here in the rich soil... now each September the fruiting heads are everywhere in the garden, throughout the hedges and the trees. Years ago Moira used to make the most beautiful golden wine from these hops and this beer reminded me of that favourite wine, with the resinous bitter tang lingering on the tongue. It's a golden colour, like the 'Wild Hare' pale ale, but stronger-tasting and more bitter. And only £1.25 a bottle in ALDI!!
Roll on Saturday when I can drink two bottles of this..

Another 'golden' ale, Moira found this Welsh beer for me in the local 'Spar' shop... quite pricey at over £2.00. They explain on the label how the hops are added late in the brewing to improve the flavour, and I wouldn't have minded the higher price but I felt it had nowhere near as much going for it as the previous two beers I tried.

A Marvellous ale which tastes as though it's just been freshly pulled from the pump in a country inn; there's a perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness with a caramel-yeast flavour which really lingers on after you've finished it. From the Springhead Brewery "in the heart of Robin Hood Country", I found myself savouring every mouthful of this... it tastes at first so much of honey, then follows through with the real-ale lover's delicate bitterness... then honey-sweet again... then bitter. A beautiful 'India Pale Ale' which reminds me of the "Wild Hare" earlier, but it's even better (and stronger at 5.5%). Moira got it from ASDA.

Have to report some disappointment with this. Another 'golden ale', it at first tastes honeyed, like the Wild Hare and Roaring Meg, but soon you realise it's rather watery. Moira said the same after tasting it (I didn't give her much) and we concluded it's a beer with which to wash down a nice country meal.
"Butty Bach" is Welsh for "little friend" they say on the label, although my limited Welsh would sooner translate this as "Little dear one" (£1.99 from Co-op stores)

It pours dark brown with a minimal head. The aroma is mild but it offers notes of caramel and some forest fruit. The taste is well balanced but the malts definitely have the upper hand. The sweetness that comes through however is fairly complex, with lots of fruitiness and caramel hints. One of the tastiest English Pale Ales I've had in a fairly long time.

I think it's sending the wrong message to the under 21 population. I know a certain percentage can't wait and have already seduced someone into purchasing these easy to find items ahead of their 21st birthday. :yep:

I sank one an hour ago (got another in the kitchen) and it's a rich, malty and dark beer. Tiny bit heavy for me and would be best just supped... I was thirsty after a hot day in Lincoln, so maybe drank it too fast. I didn't get double-vision like I hoped, but it's a big-tasting beer to be reckoned with. I think a lighter ale is best if you're thirsty.

Genesee Cream Ale.
Brewed by the Genesee Brewing Company of Rochester, NY... for many many years.
Water source is Hemlock Lake, unlike the storm drains other brewers use. But on occasion filtered water is used from the Genesee River. Especially the brown Spring run-off water that works it's way to Lake Ontario.

When I poured this just now, as black as molasses, I thought... "I hope this isn't going to be sweet". It wasn't. It's a black IPA... and good and bitter. On the label it asks: "Controversial? A contradiction in terms? Is there such a thing as a black India Pale Ale?" I guess it's the roasted malt, but this was nothing like I expected; a good one for supping slowly.

Came across three bottles of this little beauty whilst going for my drink fix for tonight in one of the garages (I top the fridge up every morning in preparation for the evening).

Swordfish ale is a unique blend of Wadworth beer and Pusser’s Navy Rum (rationed to the Navy during WWII) with an ABV of 5%, perfect for those who like to enjoy something a little different.
It was originally brewed to support the 100th year anniversary of the Fleet Air Arm, but is now available all year due to its incredible popularity.
The Fleet Air Arm is a charity which aims to raise awareness of the impact and influence of naval aviation and to keep the Navy’s historic aircraft flying. For every pint of Swordfish beer sold nationally, Wadworth donates 5p to the charity, Navy Wings.
So not only is it a real ale with a heart, but it’s packed with flavour. Swordfish has a gentle rum aroma and features dark, unrefined sugar adding a rich smoothness. It is a full-bodied, deep copper coloured ale with a base of crystal malt and delicate Fuggles and Goldings hops.

Navy Wings keeps heritage Naval aircraft in the skies, telling the exciting story of the early pioneers of Naval flying to HMS Queen Elizabeth and her F35 jets. Funded entirely by public donations the charity restores, maintains and flies a collection of rare and historically significant naval aircraft which display and inspire millions of people each year at air shows around the country.
Based at RNAS Yeovilton the collection includes the only two airworthy Swordfish in the world, two Sea Furies, a Sea Hawk and Sea Vixen. Gents,
I like to drink craft beers. I use an app called Untapped. https://untappd.com
It is great for keeping track of beers that you have enjoyed and allows you to rate the beers. It also helps locating beers you may like to drink for the day. Give it a try.
Another fun activity is holding a beer exchange every 4 months. Get 24 people together. Each brings a case of craft beer. No major brands. No duplicates. We have a get together with simple foods to eat, conversation, enjoy a few beers then exchange. Each take just one beer from the 24 cases. You then go home with 24 different beers to enjoy and rate. Good time.
I just enjoyed this utterly fantastic double bock:

Managed to grab the last bottle in the shop of
Dark & Stormy
Brewed by Nøgne Ø (Grimstad, Norway)/Kaapse Brouwers (Rotterdam, the Netherlands)
Spiced Stout 8% ABV
Jet black in the glass no light whatsoever coming through. The nose wasn't really something I picked up. Could be a slight cold coming on but the flavour was a really nice balance of heavily roasted malt, the bitterness of the hops
and a touch of sweetness coming through without becoming dominant. Didn't really pick up the dark rum or ginger but a touch of lime added nicely to the hops. The batch was brewed only 6 months ago and it could have coped well with being stored a tad longer to smooth out the taste but it is a minor issue all in all here.
Most of all, I say this was a proper stout in that they did not hold back on the roasted malt while keeping the bitterness there. Too bad the price and the one-off of the brew keeps me from buying it more or else I def wouldn't mind keeping a few bottles in storage for a couple of years.

Looks excellent! I'm a porter fan and becoming a strong supporter of IPA.
This is a strange ale I have tried. Ale from the Old Vale is an English-inspired ale brewed with hops and herbs grown on our farm. The all-malt ale starts dry and bitter, with sweet herbs supplying the balance. Native herbs blue giant hyssop and bee balm produce a big herby aroma.
Kind of has a grassy/hay taste to me.

Chocolate Salty Christmas Balls by Cervisiam
Christmas Stout, 0.33l can.
Wow. This was different. Black as sin and not really any head that lasted longer than a few seconds. Loads of chocolate and a dose of salt liquorice dominate both nose and taste. Not sure what to think really. Do I like it? A 0.33l is plenty for me but then again, it is a sipper and not something to gulp down. Interesting, I will say but I doubt I will seek it out and buy again.

St Bernardus Christmas Ale
75 cl 10% ABV
Belgian Quad style
https://systembevakningsagenten.se/images/product/id/3091.jpg
Dark chestnut colour, fair bit of carbonation with an easy 3 finger head for a careful pour. For a christmas beer, it was not spicy at all but had hints of fruits and berries. Banana, ever so slightly, blueberry, plum, and a definite vinous character that never became dominant but added nicely to the flavour. Would go well with christmassy cakes, if I could cope with any more christmas food/cake but perhaps not so well with a rich dinner, being a bit too delicate for that.

It is astonishingly like the 'Golden Crown' I mentioned before (see link below)... that beer has turned out to be the one I want to drink every weekend, with its resinous, bitter tang. My son recently had a friend of his from the Phillipines stay with him for six weeks and we were informed he preferred dark beer to lager, so I purchased a few crates of Black Sheep for our weekly Monday evening familly dinner meets.
He's gone back home now and I realised I still had a few bottles left, no problem, they tasted great and this has re-ignited my 'addiction' temporarily away from the usual lagers.
I'm going to Tesco shortly and had a look online for who is currently the cheapest dark rum provider when I come across the sister beer to Black Sheep I hadn't seen before, Golsden Sheep, at 4.7% it is slightly stronger than Black Sheeps 4.4% so I'll give it a try this evening.

The flavour of this beer belies the extremely dull-looking label: it's smooth, frothy, full-flavoured and honeyed... and it seems to keep a head on it right to the bottom of the glass. On the back there is also a quote from a Co-op member describing it as "Voluminous, good body and fruity hop"

I went round to the in-laws today and my father-in-law had found some bottles of ale in the bottom of his cupboard with "best before June 2016" on the neck. His wife forbade him to drink them so I brought them home with me... I had one at about eight o'clock and I'm still okay... Moira had said that I'd get it within two hours if I consumed something that was bad for me.

Bought in the 4 for £6.00 deal at ASDA.
A light red, bottle-conditioned ale with a gorgeous smooth malty flavour given a distinct kick by the 6.5% alcohol content... this higher ABV enhances the taste so very much. This will definitey be a four-bottle purchase next weekend.

Back in the day, I attended a Northumbria Police ten week course at RAF Dishforth and the club at the base (The Pack Horse) stocked an interesting variety of ales.
This one turned out to be one of the most popular and it always puzzled me why after having enjoyed a good session the night before we were allowed to undergo high speed chase techniques and other such training but in all honesty the base was MOD property and members of the public weren't allowed plus the fact the driving tracks were quite expansive.
Soooo, came across this in Asda this morning and thought why not and no, I won't be driving in the morning.

This first one comes with an interesting link to music and history too.
Onward, onward rode the 600...
The Charge of the Light Brigade, which inspired the Iron Maiden song The Trooper, took place at the Battle of Balaclava (1854) during the Crimean War when 600 British cavalry courageously charged the massed Russian artillery. This gallant but foolhardy assault resulted in a massive loss of life and came about due to a misunderstanding of an order given by the commanding officer, Lord Raglan.
Launched in 2013, Trooper is an award winning Premium British Beer that has sold over 15 million pints worldwide. Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickson worked with Robinsons to develop a beer which has true depth of character. Malt flavours and citric notes from a unique blend of Bobek, Goldings and Cascade hops dominate this deep golden ale with a subtle hint of lemon.

Adnams Broadside commemorates the fierce battle of Sole Bay fought against the Dutch Republic in 1672 off the Southwold coast, just across the green from our brewery.
Brewed with Pale Ale and Chocolate malt and First Gold hops, Broadside is a dark ruby red beer rich in fruitcake aromas, almonds and conserved fruit.

Last night I opened the bottle of Sharp's Atlantic which was a tad silly of me seeing as how the first beer hardly touches the sides.
Whilst not fully benefitting the flavour because of the above I feel I can say it was enjoyable, well I'd certainly remember if it wasn't.
Deep golden in colour, Atlantic has a vibrant fruity aroma redolent of lime zest to mango. The flavour is harmonious balance of barley sugar and grapefruit with a refreshingly crisp citrus linger.

Two bought at the local 'Spar' today: "Goose IPA" (355ml) from the USA and "Punk IPA" (330ml) brewed & bottled in Scotland; both a very pale yellow colour
The "Goose" (an award-winner at the Great American Beer Festival) tastes almost exactly the same as the Gold Hobgoblin I reviewed recently... except more bitter. It has an extremely hoppy smell, too.
"Punk", on the other hand, smells distinctly of grapefruit, and is less bitter, i.e. it has some sweetness which takes this down quite a bit, without reducing the breadth of flavour. It has less of a frothy head on it than the 'Goose'
Moira didn't keep the receipt, but it would seem that the US beer was £2.25, reflecting its import status, and the Scottish ale was £1.95 or £1.99... quite pricey for small bottles but this probably reflects the convenience store price-point

Unwittingly came across what could easily be turned into a bit of a scam if you tour the local ASDA stores in your area.
Out shopping with the wife the other day and as we were walking along the craft ales isle I decided to replenish some of my stocks.
I picked up four bottles of Wold Gold and a mix of four Badger Brewery ales, (Firkin Fox, Hopping Hare, Fursty Ferret and Golden Champion). All had identical tickets on them stating the individula prices and the fact four could be had for £6.
Took the shopping trolley to the checkout and the wife paid for her grocery shop and I put the beer through separately.
The Wold Gold went through correctly at £6 for four but the four differing Badger brews went through at £6.60 making a combined total of £12,60 instead of what should have been £12.
The wife works for M&S and is more savvy about these things than me and without making a fuss, she politely told the cashier that all the brews had identical ticket prices for purchases of four bottles therefore under current trading standards regulations the goods should be sold at the price they are marked at. By this time I had already swiped my contactless card therefore paying.
The cashier understood and put the bottles through again but the outcome was the same result so they gave me £2.00 of vouchers by way of an apology and asked me to go to the Customer Services counter where the matter should be rectified to my satisfaction.
Upon arrival and after the usual scanning of goods the same result was the outcome so the staff member asked me if I would take them to said aisle and they would check the tickets. Two minutes later a further apology was issued and a further £2.00 voucher was given.
This means I've £4 off my next replenishment mission and the lesson learned....computerised systems can and sometimes will get it wrong.

These IPAs are often so similarly excellent that it's hard to differentiate. Charlie Wells is nice and hoppy, sweet and strong (5.2%)

I'm thinking it might be a good idea to make an index of what we've reviewed, including page and post number, so as to prevent repeats (after drinking this stuff sometimes I can't remember whether I've done it already). I'll update it each time someone reviews a new beer.
I can't put it at the start but I can add a link to it with my future posts.

Guinness Golden Ale which she has spotted is on offer @ 4 four £6.

Named after its distinctive golden colour, GUINNESS GOLDEN ALE is brewed using GUINNESS yeast, Irish Barley, the finest hops, and a specially selected amber malt that gives the beer its rich golden hue. The subtle biscuit flavours from the malted barley perfectly compliment the crisp bitterness and delicate hop aroma, giving way to a refreshingly clean finish.

You can refer to this index before posting your beer, but fresh reviews are always welcome.
I have omitted spirits and other non-brewed and mixed or fermented drinks, except cider... although they may still be posted.
I have also omitted the brewer's name unless it forms part of the beer's name.

Picked this one up at the localTesco yesterday. A little under 4% but at 90p a bottle I have to give it a chance.
Crafted with the finest ingredients to deliver a deep gold amber beer with a clean finish and fruity overtones. The blend of fuggles and goldings - the classic twin hop masterpiece delivers a classic English beer.

Other than craft ales and the run of the mill lagers I also enjoy the odd night drinking ginger beer or cider if one catches my eye.
Such an event happened last night when I popped out to pick the wife up from work, she said she needed a few items from ASDA that her employer (M&S) hadn't in stock so, as per usual, I wandered off to the alcohol section whilst she was shopping in another aisle.
I'm currently paying between £11 and £13 for an eighteen can case of lager (prices vary from store to store on occasion) and was pleasantly surprised to see the same size case of Magners was on special at £9. It would have been rude of me to ignore the offer but I did get a mild ticking off from the wife when I caught up with her pushing a trolley almost fully laden with cases.
Magners Original is a Premium Irish Cider crafted with the finest blend of 17 Apple Varieties, picked from our orchards in Clonmel, Tipperary. Created by William Magner in 1935, we still hold true to his Original Secret Recipe to deliver the unique Magners taste that is loved around the world.

Tried this one last night, more out of curiosity than anything else but it does exactly as it says on the label. The aroma and taste were definitely enhanced by the presence of banana.
One to try again.
https://i.imgur.com/5zo98n2.jpg
This dark golden coloured ale hugs the palate with great intensity. Its malty aroma is complemented by the gentle nose of Banana. Its flavour unfolds with a sensual sparkle and a smart crispness, which balances its aroma perfectly. Tropically fruity; its ripe banana flavour, emphasised by a hint of bitterness, comes from the addition of real fair trade bananas and finishes with an emphatic, steely dryness.
Picked up a couple of these and best served 2 hours in the freezer was a ice cold crisp taste. :)

Lansdown has a bright gold colour and a spicy hop aroma with lemon and lime fruit and biscuit malt. Peppery hops, elderflower and lime fruit dominate the palate, balanced by honeyed malt. The finish is long and quenching with a fine balance of honeyed malt, peppery hops and tart fruit.

The limited-run craft beer should be available at most of the events associated with the Harley-Davidson anniversary celebration—which has been held every five years since the company’s 85th anniversary back in 1988. But lager fans should also be able to find the 115th Anniversary beer in bars and restaurants, as well as in 16-ounce cans at some retail locations, around the Milwaukee area starting this Thursday.

61 Deep. Newest brew on the Burton block. 61 metres. That’s the depth of the well at the Brewery that gives this refreshing pale ale its name. The five American and Australian hops give it its fresh, zesty aroma, whilst the tropical fruit and citrus notes make it extremely drinkable. Dive in.

4.8% ABV, from ASDA's four for £6.00 deal
Although described as a 'Vibrant American Pale', this is brewed in West Yorkshire... I guess this is owing to the 'Cascade' hop, an American variety.
This is very hoppy-smelling, with a wonderfully refreshing, crisp and bitter flavour

Sea Fury Special Ale takes its inspiration from the stormy Atlantic seas that crash into the rugged Cornish coast during the long, dark winter. This exceptional beer was first brewed in 1996 to satisfy demand from local fishermen for a stronger ale to enjoy after long and often perilous stints at sea.
Sea Fury is an exceptional example of the Special Bitter beer style offering substance and depth of flavour without compromising balance and drinkability.
Aroma: Inviting roasted and dark berry notes.
Taste: Sumptuous, full malt and berry fruit.
Finish: Moreish and pleasing hop.

This was not to my taste at all and probably requires that you like sticky toffee pudding... which I don't. In fact I hate it
Moira loves the stuff so this was her choice and her beer, but I thought I should at least try a sip.
If you like dark chocolate then you'll know of the enormous difference between a smooth top-quality chocolate and the cheap, sickly, tangy stuff that's often passed off as dark chocolate. Well to me this tasted as though someone had liquidised a cupful of that and poured it into a bottle of beer; I found it to be sharp to the taste and sweet... also there was a lack of hoppiness. You may love it but there's no way I could drink a pint of this

Speaking of Wychwood Brewery I always get there Xmas ale when it comes out. It has a great odd smell and tastes great. :)

Thanks, mate... funnily enough Moira got me some of that very thing to drink tonight! Also it's been reviewed... on pages 2 and 14... very nice beer
But I've added 'Bah Humbug!' to the index as this hasn't been featured yet

"Tequila flavour beer" (ABV 5.1%; ASDA's four beers for £6.00)
Light, faintly hoppy, sweet and tasting of lime juice; not sure about the tequila thing, it just tastes of limes to me. Very unusual and refreshing

Enjoyed a few bottles of this last night and wasn't disappointed.

A refreshing, satisfyingly smooth taste with soft fruit tones and a subtle malty flavour. Exceptionally well-balanced, Cobra is also less gassy than many other lagers, making it highly drinkable. It has a crisp and clean finish.
Went down well with my Indian Curry last night.

We usually get some 'Cobra' in for a curry. Like you say, it's not full of gas

Daughter bought me half a dozen for my anniversary.
A pale golden liquid with a light sparkle and an attractive head when poured into a glass. A pleasant, clean and attractive aroma with floral hops and distinct Cereal/Grain/Nutty notes. A refreshing clean, slightly off-dry flavour exhibiting floral citrus toffee notes. A clean and slightly bitter / dry aftertaste.
Pretty similar to Cobra in my estimation.
