Hello everyone,
I would like to start by saying that to see such an active community around a game that has its age is incredible and makes me really happy.
For quite some time now I have wanted to get into SH series but to be honest I never felt it. I bought SH4 several years ago it haven't played it for more than two hours. I can't say why but he game just felt weird.
I did another big search yesterday and yet again found out people heavily suggest modded SH3 over SH4 so I decided to give it a try. I bought the game and I am having a blast. No idea why but the game just feel much better than SH4.
I am halfway through the manual and tutorial but I already have a couple of questions so if anyone could answer these for me I would be quite grateful. Thank you in advance to anyone who gives me their advice!
a) SH3 + GWX3 Gold + ?
I installed the mod right in he beginning as it seems to best ad there really is no need to play without it. But what other mods are there that can be installed over this? I saw people suggesting SH3 commander mod but to be honest most Google results are over 2 years old. Could anyone suggest anything? Also if he above mod is a good choice could anyone easily write up a way how to install it? The search I did (and its original thread) is hard to understand...
b) Learning curve
What is the best course of action to take after finishing the tutorial? Campaign? Single missions? How long before you felt comfortable sailing?
c) Settings
The game runs in a quite low resolution. Is there any way how to increase it? Graphics are not my primary concern but hey, if I can do it why not do it.
Thank you again in advance and smooth sailing! o7

Hi there. What other games have you played besides SH3 and SH4?

Hi there. What other games have you played besides SH3 and SH4?
Hello Jason.
Hundreds, but I assume you mean maritime? Several but mostly strategies and/or ship based. Notably I'd say World of Warships (I play destroyers so I can understand the utter fragility of subs). From strategies Darkest Hour, Victoria 2, Naval Command, HoI3...

And DAMN the 2015 LSH3 mega mod might seem like even a better choice than GWX3 :o

Yes sorry, I meant SUB games. How many of sub games have you played?? I have played alot of Das Boot (1990), a bit of Silent Hunter, alot of Silent Hunter 2, a bit of Silent Hunter 3, a bit if ACOTD, and a bit of 688i H/K, and I am about to play Sub Command, but its just that I am still undecided on which of these sub games I should stick with lol. Graphics are also not my main concern. I prefer realism as long as its not too heavy and the manual is not 3cm thick etc. So maybe you also played these games and you decided to stick with SH3?

Nope, totally the other way around. SH4 was a two hour episode and thus SH3 is the first game I am getting in.

Welcome aboard Alfapiomega. :salute:
As for you question on Learning Curve, I'd say run a few the single missions with the different U-boats offered. It's on good way to get the feel of how the subs handle out on the high seas and with the enemy ships you will possibly encounter. It'll give you a good feel on firing torpedoes in combat and under pressure...... more so IMHO than the Naval Academy does. That goes for both manual and the "automatic" firing of torpedoes. They'll also help you in getting away from the Escorts that will hunt you down.
Good luck and sink em all!

Thank you, Gary.
OK, that sounds reasonable. I didn't have much time to play yesterday but I got through the flak cannon training video/description/exercise :) So I am basically one step away from trying the game itself :)

OK, I have several more questions if I may. I would be very grateful if you guys helped me with these as well! :)
I have read a lot in the past 20 hours and decided that the best mod for me would probably be LSH2015. So I decided I will delete and reinstall the game with the new mod. This however brings me to following question:
a) Patches
- In the thread about LSH2015 I found a few patches. Is the version available from their page (lsh3.com) fully patched? I think it is so but I'd rather ask
b) Additional mods
The LSH2015 seems to have it's own version of SC3. Is that the mod everyone mentions here or do I have to install another one?
c) There is about million micro mods mentioned everywhere. Can anyone who plays LSH2015 tell me if I should look into any of those? I can't for the love of god figure out what is compatible with what... ><
Sorry for all the questions but I am just trying to figure this out before I dive deep into the game. I'd hate to play the game and figure out halfway through that there was some super thing I was missing this entire time...
Thank you in advance!

Hi Alfa
LSH3-2015 I can highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys SH3.
a) Patches
- In the thread about LSH2015 I found a few patches. Is the version available from their page (lsh3.com) fully patched? I think it is so but I'd rather askYou do not need to do anything.
Just follow the download and installation notes.
b) Additional mods
The LSH2015 seems to have it's own version of SC3. Is that the mod everyone mentions here or do I have to install another one?Yes it does and gives you so many options.
It also comes with hsie already set up for LSH3 and you can make additional changes to suit your game play.
There are 2 very useful manuals: LSH3-Commander Edition 2015 and Patch HSIE-v1681 for LSH3 Edition 2015.
Unfortunately there is not a manual for the LSH3-2015 version but there is a comprehensive mini-manual for the 2010 version where there are some similarities to the 2015 version.
The mods are already installed disabled in JSGME.
The hsie can only be changed with the application disabled.
I have done 25 patrols with no problems at all.
My current list of mods.

In SH3 Commander you also have the option to set the career and crew management.
This should only be done once at the start of each new patrol/mission and then unticked.

Thank you very much for the answer with the screens, this helps a lot! :)
The only question I would have for you now is (but I think you already answered it by showing your active mods) - are there any mods or lists of extra mods compatible with LSH?
Also I finally understand the HSIE mod - realism which is great. Looking forward to doing it! :)

A request: Please do not quote entire sets of pictures, especially when yours is the very next post. If you need to comment on a single picture, by all means quote it. Otherwise it just takes up space.
Thanks. :sunny:

If you want to try a high resolution mod that I've found so far to be compatible with LSH2015 is http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=215433 (Ahnenerbe's 1920x1080 widescreen mod.) I've replaced the OLC mod GUI with it, even though I actually love the OLC GUI, for the resolution increase.
Also, if you're brave and have an abundance of patience, play with manual targeting. It's much more rewarding to compute solutions yourself than to have them handed to you and both the OLC GUI and the widescreen GUI are setup for successful manual attacks (OLC is a little better in this regard) - in my opinion. If you start off with manual TDC, expect some frustrations, be willing to analyze what went wrong with your last shot(s), and try again. Learning to ride, so to speak, without the training wheels (again this is my opinion) will set you up for a more immersive adventure. Especially when there can be much time spent without enemy contact, having more to do in those moments makes them even richer. :)
Also, one of the nice things about the UI mods, is you can usually swap them in and out without much heartache. Usually.
Also, if you haven't removed GWX yet, just copy the directory to another location before uninstalling so you have a working copy of it for the next time you want to try it. I think many of us have tried and played multiple mods. There's even an application called MultiSH3 that helps you keep multiple installs side by side with separated saves. Also (there's a lot of also's lol) next time you install, copy the clean installation to another folder, which will save you time later on if a mod fails to install correctly, you want to try another mod, etc.
Welcome to the addictive world of SH3. :haha: None of us ever really quits playing it, we just go on vacation. lol

Hi Alfa
It is not advisable to add any mods other than those that come with the mega mod.
The default 'wide screen' mod will give you a manual targeting solution icon as well as the identify icon from your WE officer.
The 'OLC wide screen' mod does not give you the solution icon only the identify icon.
As you are starting out it useful when you do your own solutions to then use the solutions icon and you can then compare how accurate you were.
Neither of these versions offer you a separate stopwatch though, so if you want to take manual target speeds from the map you will need a separate timing device.
