Hey there, first time posting in this forum because I have only played SH5. However, SH4 and its expansion have gone on sale on Steam. I wanted to ask if there are any issues with modding the Steam version of the game because if I bought it I would eventually want to do so. Thanks!

I had an issue with Steam corrupting my saves. I wouldn't get credit for the ships I sunk.
I bought two more copies, one a cd from ebay and another direct download from somewhere (maybe Amazon or Ubisoft, I forget) and installed them in their own folders (one I use for RFB and one for TMO) and never had a problem with saves.
Then again, another user said that he uses Steam and never had that problem.
So... basically maybe it will be fine for Steam, maybe it won't, but most people don't recommend Steam because Silent Hunter works best in it own folder. C:SH4 or wherever.
Steam forces you to install it under the steam sub folders and a lot of people report problems.
EDIT: But heck, for five bucks it may be worth a shot to try it with steam.

Thanks for the info! I kind of figured as much myself. Plus steam has the refund policy anyway, hopefully I can locate any problems within 2 hours.

I put Steam at C:\Steam so it's not in the Program Files folder.
I have no trouble playing modded with a Steam copy on either Windows 7 or 10.
I hope it all works as well for you.
Good hunting!

Careful, lato, the Silent Hunter 4 on sale for $4.99 is not U-Boat missions. Most mods won't work on it. You'll have to buy the $19.99 Silent Hunter 4 U-Boat Missions. That's a high price there, no bargain.

I downloaded SH4 from steam and placed it onto D instead of C, the cd version.
It does not work as a sep entitity, it picks up the saves from my modded version. I was hoping I could run it sep.

Download MultiSH4 and make your new installation save into its own directory.

Look it up in the Subsim download section. It allows you to have multiple SH4 installations with each one having its own separate gamesave directory. It is exactly what you need.

Place MultiSH4.exe in your SH4 folder. Run program.
Doesn't do anything with JGSME

edit: unknown version of file manager.dll - presume one of the mods?

What version of Windows are you using? Might be restricted to Win 7 or before. Okay, after further research I found that filemanager.dll is an SH4 file. Depending on what version of SH4 you are running you would need a different version of Multi-SH4. The latest one is for version 1.5 U-boat Missions. Make sure you download it from here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1110&act=down) for v1.5.
