Here it goes. So far it's going fine. But, I got huge issues evading escorts. I usually try to dive in deep and keep my speed low. (300ft at 1kn) I try to zigzag while following my plotted course but they seem to have some kind of x-ray device. I try to keep a low aspect, but it isn't working too well. Could some of you guys provide some advice. I love it hard, but that is overkill. Yet, before dumbing down the A.I and maybe spoiling the fun for me. I prefer to ask you,

PS: Is there any documentation about their radar range? How far deep and wide it can scan?

In fact I just checked the manual. But, it just create more questions than anything else. There is an example for early radar there and they seem to be able to detect in a downward cone for about 250-280 meters. I really dont understand how I keep getting ''jerrycanned''. Just to be sure. I ain't complaining or crying. I just want to understand so I can learn and deal with those situations.

The point of TMO is to make it as difficult as possible within the game engine. Ducimus set all escort crews to maximum efficiency and ability. Basically, they all have "super crews." Your experience is what Ducimus intended.

So basically the manual is bull?

Also, if people play this it is because it isn't impossible. Just very hard. That is what I want. I don't believe such a mod would become popular with invincible and unavoidable escort. I'm not stupid. You can detail your tactics. I would be grateful.

PS: Just checked in the manual under. ''TMO's objectives and realism.'' Nowhere it is said it is meant to be as difficult it can be. Just lot more challenging to enforce a more realistic behavior to players. I totally agree... Now, what exactly is that realistic behavior?

Anyway. I'll wait for the tips from people around. Meanwhile I'm going to intentionally provoke an escort and practice evading from what I can guess from the manual.
1st try: Attempt to dive under their sensor and go flank speed head on dropping my speed once i'm clear of the depth charges in an attempt to get into his blind/dead spot. FAIL
2nd try: Redo the last strategy in case I F-UP something in the process.

I'm relatively new to TMO but usually I try to A. stay far away from the escorts and then creep in while they're off in front of me, B. stay behind them in their baffles and try to get close that way. Once I do launch and they try to find me I plot a course along the same route as the convoy or TF while diving to 350 or 400 ft until the destroyers start a search pattern where I used to be where I then change course and keep it a most at 2 kts while I slink away.

Thanks. By the way do you have an idea about how much time an escort's bloodlust last? NVM. you just said you were new sorry. But yeah ill give it a try.

It's quite alright, I said relatively so I've been playing it for 4-5 months with everything but no map contacts on (seeing as I'm the captain not the sonar-man)but for me the escorts usually search anywhere from 1-6 hrs but usually I am able to slink away from them before this happens. My own suggestion is to get within 1,000 yds of your target but only after the escorts pass your firing position, then you can crank up the speed a bit and close the range seeing as your sound is covered by the destroyer's. Also if the destroyer is searching on the side of the convoy you are trying to get to stay out of visual range and follow the convoy on the surface until that destroyer starts heading back to its position in the convoy. Anyways I hope that helps. I was like you when i first started to the point where I just avoided convoys but with a little practice it becomes substantially easier to avoid the escorts. Just know that depth is not always the best way to avoid being detected. Knowing when and where to strike is.

I finally found a way. Dive at 350, 90 degree turn. when they go for a charge run I turn on them and accelerate pass behind them and go 1kts. then slowly get away. only accelerating in case of depth charge and even then I stay under 100 rpm.. once, i'm a bit far I wait for night. then surface and go away 1/3. Now to practice actually HIT the convoy before they go medieval on my ass.
In this regard I appreciate the tip. :P Will sure be useful.

Here is what I learned so far.

1-NEVER approach a convoy in calm sea, get ahead of them and plan your strategy.
2-Be wary when approaching during night time. What they can't see, they can hear.
3- Try to get behind the escort. If possible hit the convoy from behind taking the escort by surprise. Then dive deep and go sink some more while they are chasing a ghost.
4- When detected. Be fast, if you have to fire, do it. But if you THINK you SHOULD dive. Do it. I don't recall anyone dying from being overcautious in that kind of situation. But hesitation might.
5-When evading. Remember this: Fast is smooth and smooth is fast. Take your time... it's no good to be running at flank to try to run away. They will just follow you until your run out of air or battery.
6- Once you broke contact and you are fairly sure you aren't in immediate danger. Lower your speed at 1kts and slowly move away. (Speed up time if you want) Surface upon night time and use the cover of the night to leave the area.

One canned crew down!
Anyway. I think it is time I let this one die. I don't want to be flagged as someone who makes useless posts. xD

if you understand the AI, even TMO becomes rather easy, as long as you don't make mistakes. Things that matter the most getting your attack off are

Weather, in rough seas the enemy is basically deaf.

Profile of your sub, try not to be broadside to a near escort, keep your nose pointed at them. Most convoys have a front and flank escorts. I will get in front and split the gap between the front and flank escort, constantly helming towards the front escort as he comes while at silent running just below the thermal layer.

If you come under attack, go deep, when escorts make runs on you, hit flank until they explode, you simply outrun the charges, then back to silent running.
