That's Kabul the one and only modern city in the entire country therefore most progressive. There are hamlets in Afghanistan not much changed since dust was rocks.

A different time. I can tell due to the fact that there are a lot of happy Afghanis. They mustn't have much to smile about these days.

The pics were shot in 1967 and 1968. That decade many Afghanis say was a golden era, there was relative wealth, rich harvests, and for standards of the Islamic world a surprisingly liberal atmosphere. Women and girls had access to basic and higher schools, and they not only did not need to wear veil and burkha - laws were such that wearing veil and burkha even were punishable offences, they were forbidden.
