That's all they're talking about in the truck stops. Supposed to be massive, Washington will get the worst of it according to predictions. The subway is shutting down for the weekend. Are you affected? What preps have you taken? Stay warm and good luck.

People will still need to get somewhere.
Public transport, especially one that's underground would be a must.

Ok, I am not part of the planning, but I believe what is implied is this storm makes travel unsafe, so people should stay home. Cancel going to work, cancel the trips to the mall, cancel everything except emergency services.
And I'm sure the folks who man the subways are not interested in staying at work all weekend. :smug: I doubt if they get paid enough for that.

A blizzard for you guys, boiling heat for me... is there any weather that isn't trying to kill people?
Finnish Railway's biggest enemy is winter... in Finland.. which comes every year.
Same can be said about southern Finns. Really, winter comes every year, how are you not prepared for it?

Reminds me of our own road services.
In november they boast how they're prepared for winter, snowfall is forecasted a week in advance and when snow falls they claim they were surprised by it.

Average temperatures, freezing at night but quite tolerable in the day, an occasional dusting of snow. Cool but bland.

Some pro-tips from a lifelong New Englander:
Make sure to buy at least $100 in Banquet frozen dinners for every inch of snow forecasted.
Be sure to arrive at the grocery store two hours before the time the snow is forecasted to begin, when there is no more shopping carts or salt left in the store.
Never, ever shovel your sidewalk. Doing so is a sign of weakness.
Don't slow down when you're driving. If you go off the road, there's plenty of soft fluffy snow to land in.
Make sure to continuously blare your horn at every pedestrian who has elected to walk in the street, rather than in three feet of snow.
If you lose power, call every restaurant in the area to see if any of them have a generator, because you bought nothing but frozen dinners and can't heat them.

They are saying that in addition to D.C, New England is going to get it too. With the forecasters giving notices days in advance of a storm, there is no reason to be out anyhow except in an emergency.
Being off the road also helps the road crews with their job of clearing the roads and making them passable.
Snow now what is that again? :hmmm:

I had to snicker at the shoppers here in North Virginia doing their "survivalist" shopping.
You could not buy any bottled water. The shelves were empty and I saw shopping carts filled with nothing but bottled water $$$
When was the last time anyone in North Virginia ran out of potable water because of a snow storm? Certainly not in the 21st century that's for sure.
I could understand if one lived out in the country, but here, in North Virginia, the only country around here is the club.
Picking up a supply of food to last this weekend I can understand, but to stockpile 20 gallons of water? Do these people understand that water does not store well for long times in those plastic jugs? It gets a bit skunky after a while. I would sooner drink the water out of my 75 gallon water heater if something really happens to our municipal water supply.
If you run out of water, just take your largest pot, fill it with.... oh, I don't know, may be the snow and put it on your gas stove, because no one can remember the last time municipal gas was interrupted by a snow storm either up here.
It's a snow storm, not a nuclear attack by zombie politicians. Take reasonable precautions, stay inside and prepare for the worst--- meaning that you may have to sit down and read a book by a window for a few hours.
People here in North Virginia are a hoot. Coming originally from the North East, where they really have bad winter weather... every year, I spend a lot of my time shaking my head ruefully and wishing I had bought stock in toilet paper and bottled water supply.
On a more serious note, if you are in the snow area, please watch your pets. If you need several layers of heavy clothing and you are still cold, think about your dog. Also please wash your dog's feet, as if you take them outside, there is a chance they can be walking in the various anti-iceing compounds and most of them are not good for dog's feet.
Signing off now. I don't know if I will be back, depending on this storm.... ach, who am I kidding, our internet will still be on (we have underground lines here).
Stay safe, but stay smart at the same time.

Finnish Railway's biggest enemy is winter... in Finland.. which comes every year.VR's ability to fail year after year is truly impressive. Could it perhaps be that they and State have cut too many corners in rolling stock and infrastructure maintenance respectively? (yes, thats somewhat rhetoric question)
Same can be said about southern Finns. Really, winter comes every year, how are you not prepared for it?Indeed! "Talvi yllätti autoilijat" (Winter surprised motorists) is propably most popular newspaper headline ever...

I can only echo this sensible advice, some people keep their dog out in the back yard, but while it's like this it's better to bring it in to the warm. If you don't want it to mess up the furniture then invest in an indoor dog cage or even a child gate to keep them in one room. But don't leave them out in the cold. Same goes for cats, although they generally come and go as they like, but keep an eye out for them nonetheless.
Those outside the US can watch weather chasers streaming their experiences here:
https://tvnweather.com/live
Currently one chap is at Roanoke, VA watching the snow come down, and there's two more in the Washington/Baltimore area moving into position.
Stay safe and stay warm folks. And keep an eye on the older folks in your neighbourhood too if you can, in times like this they can struggle to survive.

We're supposed to get 12 to 18 inches of snow here in northern Delaware. I'm as ready as I wanna be. LOL
The snow blower is not on the Kubota. Wouldn't take long to do IF I need it.

To all of you who are making fun of those who panic and over prepare, and those who don't know how to drive, we have them too. We make of fun of them also. For us, the schools were called off because of the forecast, I was off anyway, and my wife took off work early. Where we live, we have to stay prepared, so it's really just another day for us. We just planned on staying home until the streets are cleared.

Yeah, you're in it too, there are thousands of motorists stranded on I-75 :(
http://www.wbir.com/news/traffic/stand/21282736
Kentucky State police said thousands have been in a standstill on Interstate 75 for more than 17 hours.
The interstate is completely shutdown for more than 20 miles between Mount Vernon and London. Kentucky police have shutdown traffic at mile marker 48 northbound in London City and mile marker 68 in Mount Vernon.
Police said there are currently no hotel vacancies in London, and all roadways in London remain unsafe for travel. As temperatures continue to drop this evening, roadways will continue to become more difficult to navigate.
Law enforcement is asking people to please stay indoors and off the roadways.
I-75 North is closed at Exit 41. Right now, all traffic will divert to travel on Kentucky State Route 461.
I'm off to Columbus, GA in the am, hopefully it will all be past by then.

25 miles south of Wilkes-Barre. Right at the intersection of interstates 80 & 81.
So far it's a typical snowstorm. We have accumulated about a foot since yesterday evening and it's forecast to continue at 1 to 2 inches per hour until 01:00 Sunday morning. It should taper off by this evening and I don't think we'll see that much myself. If we get the high winds they're talking about, it'll blow this shtuff everywhere!

Eddie, they are there on duty come rain, sleet, or snow. Never do they waiver from doing their duty for those Unknowns that kept us free.
As for the storm... yeah we got hit pretty hard. Not so much by the snow but by the 40 mph winds. Drifting snow was and still is the worst of it, even tho we got about 10"s that I can figure. Delaware is in a State of Emergency until Sunday morning.
I know the state doesn't have the equipment to handle this, but I also know they don't know how to plow with what they do have. They make one swath down a road and to hell with any other lanes of travel. They won't even clean an intersection. I was out and happened to see 4 Del Dot dump truck come out of their yard. Not one was spreading salt or dropping their plows to clean off snow. Not did any after the first truck drop their plows to clean the next lane over. Sad to say the least. When I plowed for the town where I lived up north you plow never came up once you were out on the highways until it was necessary to do so. And you cleaned the intersection in the direction you were going. A plow coming the other way did the same for the way he was headed.
To top if off, small comercial plows cleaning HOAs streets are pushing snow across major highways. That alone will get you a ticket. It's against the law.

One thing I don't understand with regards to the traffic jams on the toll roads. Everyone knew the storm was coming days in advance. The forecasters told everyone again, days in advance how much the snow totals would be and when the snows would start.
Yet there were people stranded on the roadways. Without food, water and perhaps medication. This was a life threatening ordeal. The clogged roadways prevented the snow plows from being able to come in and do their jobs. My concerns were for the older people and people and kids in general in areas where electrical power was lost and they had no heat and also animals left out in the cold and snow.

Yep. Bad judgement, bad planning. Some people have never experienced severe weather on the road, they have no idea how dangerous it can be, and they think someone will rescue them if they get into trouble. :nope: Much better to camp at home until it clears up and reduce the stress on emergency services.

There is also the question of being used to it. In Montreal, we get an average of 6-7 feet of snow every winter, so the city is equipped with enough snowplows and salt/abrasives for the road. Even in a blizzard, the highway department keeps the main highways open.
Every driver has snow tires and knows how to drive in winter. Most have 4wd vehicles. Winter driving is a skill you have to practice regularly, even with snow tires and 4wd, your car reacts differently on snow and ice. If you are not used to it, it will easily spin out.

Doesn't put strain on your back as the point is not shoveling the snow, but pushing it (preferably to your neighbors drive way).

anobody here watch this show? One of my favorite, "Highway thru hell" about tow truck drivers on the Coquihalla Highway in B.C. It goes through the Rocky Mountains and has some of the worst winter weather in Canada and yes, it is open year round.

I haven't seen that but have seen episodes of " Ice Road Truckers " Those people have nerves of steel that drive semi trucks over frozen lakes and rivers. I would imagine the tow truck operators probably face similar situations and weather conditions.
Catfish made a good point regarding the tractor trailer operators being under orders to " get the load through " . Sounds reasonable. Only the drivers involved can answer that. Perhaps there are driver / operators here with some insight into operations during adverse weather conditions ?

I am really glad my company is closed today. I checked my anatomy books and I have pains where humans do not have muscles. :D
There are about 640 muscles in the human body and all 800 of them hurt today.
But I got all the snow cleared. I wished I still had my snow blower though.

I am fortunate that a good friend has a pickup with a plow. Cleaned the driveway in minutes for $20.00 :D

That's all they're talking about in the truck stops. Supposed to be massive, Washington will get the worst of it according to predictions. The subway is shutting down for the weekend. Are you affected? What preps have you taken? Stay warm and good luck.

Neal,
I'm in the middle of it. 30 inches of snow. Schools are still closed. Military bases are closed as well. But hey, I made it to work Monday and today. Go figure. The clean up crews did an excellent job.
And this was my God send for digging out. Nothing short of a work horse. I got it for free. They said it would not start. Pulled the carb and cleaned. Started first pull.

The guy who killed a man trying to help him get out of a ditch during the storm has been officially charged with murder! Lock him up and throw away the key!!

Hmm, do companies tell their drivers not to drive, under certain conditions? Or is it a "the load must go through or you lose your job" thing?
It's up to my judgment, they won't force us to drive if conditions are unsafe, probably huge liability issues, plus they are reasonable. That's what I have seen thus far.

My drivers are independent contractors. I can not force dispatch. I let the driver decide if they want to risk their livelihood in the snow or other weather events of magnitude.

Drunk person with a gun. What could possibly go wrong. :nope:
I wonder if there will be a call to ban alcohol? If this man did not have access to alcohol, this tragic incident would not have happened.

It's been done already. It didn't work and brought out a lot of guys with guns named Tommy.
