Merchants in the early part of the war- no deck guns, clay pigeons, right? WRONG!
Got too close to one and was using the Flak gun to take out the deck cargo, then the whole thing blew up- deck cranes, debris everywhere, my U-boat got engulfed in the explosion! I wa about 20-50 feet away from the ruddy freighter. Note to self- deck gun or torps ONLY!

If i remember correctly there was at least one boat lost as a result of proximity to its target when the ship exploded suddenly and violently which caused the attacking u-boat to suffer considerable damage. i cannot remember which boat off hand.

I remember the first time that happened to me. It was doubly embarrassing because it was in the Deck Gun Tutorial at the Academy. Killed one of the KM's best instructors. :oops:
