Hi there, I'm new here, and I'm looking for a Captain who is great at this game with the Realistic setting on, that being said, no outside view, no map marker updates, all 100% Anyone that has beaten this game or aceing it, let me know I would like some lessons on how to attack using sonar only since I can't seem to escape them Destroyers or subchasers :/\\!!

Bonjour,

If you read French, I can advise you but my English is too bad. I'm not certain to be included because the subject is complex.

First, I advise you to play with contacts displayed on the map. Otherwise, you can not learn from your mistakes. When you are familiar with the periscope to superimposed images, you can play 100% realistic.

Personally, I use the method of Dick O'Kane.

There are two opposing goals here: offensive (hitting targets with torpedoes, sinking them) and defensive (evasion of the escorts after the offensive action).

What you are asking is how to perform the second, defensive part. Please keep in mind that if you are working with the stadimeter, the inherent problems with the methods mean that observations and shooting need to be done under 1500 yards to get consistent hits.

Shootiing itself should be done between 500 and 750 yards to mitigate observational errors. If you are attacking an escorted convoy, that puts you at a great disadvantage for phase 2: evasion.

So some of the time you will unavoidably die. Or you will accept that most shots will miss and shoot from further away to maximize survival possibilites after the shot.

Bad weather and rough seas are your friend. Darkness is your friend. Thermal layers are your friend. Try to get all three working for you before you attack. Know where the thermal barrier is. Don't think the thermal barrier is a closed vault door, they still can hear you below it, just not as well.

If you're playing stock, RFB or GFO this will generally be enough to keep you alive almost all the time. If you're playing TMO then you still have your hands full. TMO/RSRDC is slightly easier than TMO and aircraft will be nerfed.

Bonjour RR,

I 100% agree with that. But this assumes that one has failed the offensive. In my opinion, to destroy a heavily escorted convoy, it is first necessary to make a hole in the ASW protection.

If the attack on ASW is successful, the defensive is a breeze.

If you are playing as realistically as you can then merchants are the primary targets. Escorts are low percentage shots and waste torpedoes for no tonnage. In the real war they shot at merchants and dealt with the resulting reprisals from warships as best they could. Those who targeted destroyers primarily ended up paying the supreme price sooner rather than later.

A passive sonar only approach is *not* the solution. It may be somewhat more survivable (maybe only) but it will seriously reduce your combat effectiveness. With the technology at hand, passive sonar plots are *possible* but are very inaccurate.

To further stress what others have said:
A daylight attack in shallow water from close range with calm seas is a suicide run. Don't do it. To quote Patton, "The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his." Be aggressive, but be smart.

IMHO, though, the single most important factor in surviving an attack on an escorted target is engagement range. The textbook torpedo attack is involves shooting at a range of 500-1,500 yards. If things start blowing up in the convoy, the *first* thing the destroyers are going to do is charge down that 1,000 yard line. Don't be there. The further you can shoot accurately, the more survivable your attacks will be.

True.
But the April 13, 1944, COMSUBPAC sends a message to all the submarines setting a new priority targets: the destroyers.

True.
But the April 13, 1944, COMSUBPAC sends a message to all the submarines setting a new priority targets: the destroyers. I think it would be more accurate to say "adding another priority target". Destroyers were in no way given priority over transports, tankers, cruisers, or such. It was just they were then recognized as being a worthwhile part of the Imperial war effort.

Sonar only attacks are not really realistic. The USN trained for that type of attack, but it became apparent very early on that this method was not going to achieve any significant success.

You didn't say what mods you're using. If it is TMO, that may be your problem. Otherwise, I would suggest attempting attacks from longer range, or trying to find targets that are not heavily protected. Attacking heavily escorted convoys, or task forces should be dangerous, and you should expect to learn how to do this right away.
