After a long break from SH I'm back enjoying the sim again, the last time I played SH was when SH2 and Pacific Aces was current, that's how long it's been.

I am still looking for commands in SH3 and 4 from back then, a lot of improvements I know so I'm not knocking these new versions.

Last night for example I was in a single mission and wanted to steer a few degrees to port, I know how to do it on the compass dial at the bottom but I tend to go too far.
So I clicked on 'Hard to Port' but that was OK if I needed to evade a DD or something but for a few degrees it was too much, so I wondered if there was hidden key somewhere that allows you to move slightly Port or Starboard like there was in SH2?

There isn't any keyboard command for that, but if you click on the bottom of the compass, you can use the rudder position dial to make changes. So with that you could order 20° rudder, or 10° rudder. Then when you are on the course you want, use the " ' " key to order rudder amidships.

That tab at the bottom also works in a corresponding way for setting depth beyond 165 feet and for setting speed in smaller increments. To dive below 450 feet (I think that's the max on the popup depth meter), go to the Control Room and find the dial that shows depths up to 600 feet. It will be above the desk that holds the boat diagrams. Click on the depth you want. It won't be indicated by a red line as on the regular depth meter, but the helmsman will acknowledge the depth you set with the mouse pointer. Be aware that going below 500' may cause your boat to gradually sink, probably due to the decreased buoyancy of your boat as you go deeper. I think it has to do with the air in the ballast system being compressed, but I'm not sure about the physics.

Another trick you can use in the game are the ' - ' and ' = ' keys. The first is the view to heading. It will change the periscope or TBT view to the front (heading). The second will change the course of your boat to the view.

So, if you want to change course exactly 8° to port, you first look through the p/s and press the view to heading to place it at 0°, then manually turn it to 352° (8° to port), and press the heading to view key. The helmsman will steer 8° to port.

This takes longer than clicking on the compass dial, but permits more precise course adjustments.
