I have posted this before without much luck.
The problem is that SH4 will not give me a Gato when playing career.
I can start a single mission with a Gato so I know they are in there somewhere. But in career, playing out of Pearl or Manilia it goes up to a Tambor then jumps to a Balao class, no Gato!
I have tried everything from deleting and reloading the game to getting fresh mods and starting over.
It seems to be TMO2.5 that is to blame. Has no one else had this problem?

Thanks...

cant say I know much about the situation but have you considered that maybe that sub wasn't available during that date period?

often supermods like TMO and RFB will change things to reflect historically accurate dates and times for things so maybe that's why?

I think Webster is right. At the outbreak, the Gatos were either still in the shipyards, or in the process of workup.

If you can't get one at a later date, I don't know what the problem would be. :hmmm:

See if you can get one from Pearl in early or mid '42.

Yes, I do have the small patch applied.
As for the date, well it changes subs correctly up to the Tambor.
Then gives me a Balao when it should be a Gato, a date before
Balaos became available.:/\\!!

Have no idea what is going on.:nope:

Thanks...

It may also be a function of your tonnage claimed to date. High tonnage totals seem to get more advanced boats. I have been given a Gato class boat in the past, so I know it works using my setup (below).

Armistead, been a long time indeed.
What do you mean a lower class than a Tambor? Don't you simply have to take what the game gives you?:06:

torpedobait, your setup seems similar to mine. Maybe I will just run the missions and not sink anything and see what happens.:sunny:

I know the Gato is in there somewhere. I use to get one all the time, and then bang, it just stopped giving them out.

Thanks for the help...

So, I tried starting out of Pearl in a Porpoise.
I went from Midway right back to Pearl without even attacking a gull.
I did this 4 times looking to see what sub I would get next.
At the end of the 4th go around this pops up...

"This last patrol proved to be the last straw for your beleaguered colleagues
trying to keep you in the captain's chair. Your repeated poor performance has forced the US Navy, in its infinite wisdom to promote you! You are now in charge of your own little compartment in a new building called the Pentagon, but no water in sight, you start to suspect that your career as a
captain on the high seas is long over. The Navy can now rest assured that at least nobody will make off your office chair."
:har::haha:

At least they have a sense of humor.

Yeah, you have to sink stuff to get a new command. Makes the higher-ups happy.

I have run a number of mods over the years.
Never had any problem until...I think it started with TMO2.0 or 2.5 I can't
remember exactly. But then no one else seems to have the problem.:doh:

Simmy, I had similar problems like what you have and I will try to remember what I did to fix it.
first check the careerstart.upc file under the Data\UPCData\UPCCampaignData folder and see if the gato is even listed so you can get it. if you start your career from manila or fremantle- you won't get a gato.
you can copy and paste the list of subs from pearl start up and put it over the manilla/fremantle line.
see if that does it for you, plus doing this- you could start the career with a gato.
I will look into the upgrade in subs later and let you know what I find.

I also found under the flotillas.upc of that same directory that your getting a gato will depend on the date you finish a patrol and if based at pearl or fremantle.
at pearl the gato comes availble 1942-04-18 and the balao comes up at 1943-08-01, and at fremantle based flotillas they are real close to the same day with only a 4 month difference.
if you just want to start with a gato you could change the careerstart.upc and get one at the start of your career.

sfc,
Thanks for the info. I will give it a try and see if I can get it to work.:yeah:

Simmy
were you able to find out anything?
what I was refering to is the careerstart.upc file in either your documents (sh4/data/cfg/userplayercontext) folder or in the main installed location (data/upcdata/upccampaigndata.
here is what I did to that file so I can use any class sub at career start

[CareerStart 1]
ID=Beginning
NameDisplayable=1941
StartTimeInterval=1941-12-08, 1942-02-01
BackgroundPic=1941.tga
CareerStartBriefingText=The war has just started, and we're being beaten.
RenownOptions=1000,2000,500000

[CareerStart 1.Flotilla 1]
ID=C1Flotilla1
NameDisplayable=Pearl Harbor
IDLinkFlotilla=PearlHarborCommand
IDLinkUserPlayerUnits=F1Porpoise,1,F1Tambor,1,F1Ga r,1,F1Gato,15,F1Balao,10 (this line is showing space between ga r after I post so watch that)
FlotillaBriefingText=
FlotillaCommonality=1.000000

hope this helps out.
I don't use the mod you mentioned but if you look in the mod files you should still find the careerstart.upc file and fix it. good luck

sfc,
Here is what I found.

[CareerStart 1]
ID=Beginning
NameDisplayable=8 Dec 1941
StartTimeInterval=1941-12-07, 1941-12-07
BackgroundPic=1941.tga
CareerStartBriefingText=The war has just started, and we're being beaten.
RenownOptions=5000,8000

[CareerStart 1.Flotilla 1]
ID=C1Flotilla1
NameDisplayable=Pearl Harbor
IDLinkFlotilla=PearlHarborCommand
IDLinkUserPlayerUnits=F1Porpoise,4,F1Tambor,5,F1Ga r,4,F1Narwhal,2
FlotillaBriefingText=
FlotillaCommonality=1.000000

Does not look like what you posted. Are you saying I should type in what you have there in your post? If so I will type it in and start a new game.

thanks...

you are on the right track, the file you have clearly shows no gato at start of career.
then it would depend in your up grade files if it has a gato. but if you just want to start a career with a gato use this line
IDLinkUserPlayerUnits=F1Porpoise,1,F1Tambor,1,F1Ga r,1,F1Gato,15,F1Balao,10

then you can start with any of those.
just thought of one question, you are starting from pearl right?
if not then it is another whole can of worms. let me know how it goes.:up:
also what mods do you have loaded? you may need to edit mod files too. remember-back up all files before changing!

sfc,
I have tried starting from every port the game will let me.
No luck with any of them.
When I get a chance I will change that line and start from Pearl.
Oh wouldn't it be nice...:sunny:

thanks much for your help!
