I was wondering if anyone around here has played Birth of Rome (http://www.matrixgames.com/products/460/details/Birth.of.Rome), or any of the Alea Jacta Est games?

I bought BOR awhile ago, and just recently got around to playing through a few campaigns. Though it has a few flaws, I think it is quite good. Imo, it succeeds not only on a historical accuracy level, but also on a fun-game level.

Anyway, Matrix has it (and most others) on sale until Jan. 10, if anyone is interested.

AJE is the original game, Birth of Rome is a standalone expansion, and there are several other expansions requiring AJE. They all use the AGEOD game engine, which has been around for awhile, from what I gather. I don't have a huge number of games, so it is new to me, but it seems to work well.

Those who have tried these, or some of the other AGEOD games are invited to comment.

Haven't heard of this one, might have to give it a look.

There's another game set in the same timeframe - Hegemony III: Rise of the Ancients.

I've played the original AJE, but I haven't gotten around to Birth of Rome, Hannibal or the other expansions yet. As far as Classical-era operational wargames go, it's probably the best one I've seen. I hope they get around to releasing more of these with a focus on the late Empire at some point.

I'm not familiar with this series, or most of them for that matter. I watched Angry Joe's review of Rome Total War II (?), but I got the impression it was more along the lines of a colorful Risk game, than a strategy simulation.

I suspect they are looking at that, if not already at work on it. It must be a successful series to have the number of games/expansions they've had. I really like the early Roman scenarios, and, of course, the Punic Wars, but haven't played those yet.

My choice for a future expansion would be a Classical Greece, Peloponnesian War version. I think this would be a natural.
