View Full Version : Torpedo problem/ghost torpedoes?

I am running Silent Hunter 4 Gold Edition. My mods are:
RFB
RFB patch
RSRDC
RSRDC patch
ISP 2.8

I got this problem after installing ISP 2.8. I hope someone can help me because I really, really want to keep that mod.

The problem is I have fired numerous torpedoes and have yet to hit. I was on patrol and attacked a group of destroyers, firing two torpedoes at a destroyer in the center of the group. Two misses. OK. No problem. It was a tough shot for me. (Destroyers are fast and I'm new at this!!!) I was a little concerned because the destroyers did not come looking for me. Did I miss by that much?

Same patrol. After a few more unsuccessful attacks on more destroyers, I finally managed to find some merchant shipping. Found a coastal tanker. Small ship but I have yet to score on this patrol and I'm running low on fuel. I really want this ship so I don't go back to base with a zero. I close in. Good looking shot. AOB is 90 P. Range 800 yards. I really want him so I give him a five torpedo spread. "Torpedo missed, sir," was said to me five times. Not one hit. I know I'm new to this but no one could have missed that shot. No one.

So I go to the sub school and spend time attacking the Tone Cruiser in torpedo practice. Time and again I get no hits. But at least it's daylight and I can see the torpedo wakes. I fire four torpedoes and watch as four wakes go right toward the cruiser. Perfect spread. Four wakes go right into the broadside of the ship. Nothing happens. The ship sails on and I see four wakes heading out to sea. "Torpedo missed, sir." No duds. No premature explosions. The wakes go right up to the ship and pass through to the other side.

I have repeated the attack school torpedo practice numerous times. There is an occasional dud. Once, I saw a torpedo porpoising. But every torpedo that hits the ship simply passes right through it and heads out to sea.

Everything worked fine until I added ISP 2.8 to the mod mix. When I would hit with a torpedo I would see and explosion. Now they act like they are ghost torpedoes.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? Clearly, ISP is a good mod. Many people are enjoying it without any problems. Did mine get corrupt somehow? If so, what files should I be looking at? Is it something else? Please help. I really want to keep ISP 2.8.

I have had this problem myself in the past. In my case it was to much of a mod soup or something didn't install correctly. I would suggest that you uninstall the ISP mod, check your game to see if it's playing correctly and the if it is reinstall the ISP mod and give it another try. It could be a bad download or a bad install. This happens from time to time. :D

I uninstalled ISP 2.8 and everything worked fine. So I deleted ISP 2.8 from the mod folder. Then I reinstalled it from my 7zip file. Reactivated the mod and the same problem occurs.

It's the torpedoes. It's not the ships. I went to the attack school and after watching another spread go right through the broadside of the cruiser I surfaced and rammed the cruiser. Took a lot of fire but I made it to the cruiser and hit it. So the ships are visible to all parts of the program. There's just something with the torpedoes.

I might have to try a fresh download from here.

Thanks for your reply cdsubron7.

I ran a mission with the same mod list, using my original ISP 2.8. I fired 6 torpedoes, Mk 14. I got 4 blasts and 2 duds. So, for me, everything seems normal.

I would try to download a fresh copy, like cdrsubron7 suggested.

If you used something other than 7-zip to decompress the mod, I would use 7-zip. In the past I've had problems with other file compression programs.

Hopefully, someone can confirm their Subsim copy of ISP 2.8 works ok.

Torpedo Impact!! (I love hearing those words)

The problem is solved. I did a fresh download of ISP 2.8 and it works perfectly. I tested it in the sub school torpedo attack mission and scored hits with all four torpedoes. When last seen, the cruiser had its bow awash and its deck on fire.

I live in a small town out in the boonies in Nebraska. We don't always have the latest and greatest equipment for our services around here. It also gets very dusty when they're moving feed around and we fight a constant battle to keep our computers clean so they don't overheat or start acting funny. I should have thought to try another download right away. It's not the first time I got a corrupt download. But I run this on Windows XP and got it in my head that it might be a problem with the file extensions, that my computer might have certain file extensions slated to "open with" a program not compatible with Silent Hunter. So I stayed focused on the files. Of course, even if one was corrupt I don't know how I would've fixed it without downloading another copy anyway. Oh well. Sometimes all my head does is hold my ears apart.

At any rate ... ISP 2.8 is a good download. The problem with my first download was entirely on this end. The second download is installed and is 100% operational.

Thanks to cdrsubron7 and TorpX for your replies. Good luck and good hunting to you.

I'm glad you got it sorted out, and there is nothing serious involved.

Good luck on your patrol.
