View Full Version : Young Buna in the Bahamas

Young Buna was offered extended leave with pay rather than rejoin his ship on 6th December but rather than spend Xmas at home with his family he decided to return to his ship, a decision I can understand because he needs twelve months sea time in before he can sit his Masters.
What I didn't know was the fact that two days after he joined his ship she went into dry dock (counts toward sea time) in the Bahamas so he is honest in admitting he is now a tad bored and wondering if he made the correct decision.
You made your bed son so you will now have to lie in it (praying the wife doesn't see this post).
I'll post a few pictures in a little while.

wow, to be on a paid vacation in the Bahamas for months and yet he thinks he made a bad choice to be stuck in that situation???????????
when he gets our age he will laugh at himself for saying such a silly thing lol.
Does the Bahama layover count as sea time?

It can happen, everything over there is geared towards tourism. Its not exactly a hotbed of activity in the off season.

Yes, so I suppose that is the method in his madness. Ship has now left dock and is back at Fort Lauderdale preparing for a Caribbean cruise of Xmas and New Year.

Same where I live. Everything is geared for the turist and in the winter almost every resturant is closed and the prices they take :o

They extend beyond the side of the ship when in use but when in port they are located inside a hull recess.

MS Eurodam is a Signature class cruise ship for Holland America Line. Eurodam is the 80th ship to enter Holland America's service and, at 86,700 tons and carrying 2,104 passengers, she is the largest Holland America ship to date, along with her sister MS Nieuw Amsterdam. She also has dynamic positioning abilities using three 1.9 MW bow thrusters and two 17.6 MW aft mounted Azipods. Total electrical power generation is 64 MW by six diesel generators.

Why dry dock in the Bahamas? Less expensive?
The sun dries it off faster. And dries the new paint faster too. ;)
Jim's son just repainted where he's pointing to on the hull. That was the main reason they were in dry dock. The helmsman scraped a barnacle when they stopped in port for lunch last week. ;)

AHH! FIXED!! I didn't like the one shot: found a better:http://www.gaycruisepictures.com/eurodam/drydock/dry0099.jpg
http://www.gaycruisepictures.com/eurodam/drydock/dry0063.jpgAnd I thought painting a 41' ketch with Antifouling copper-oxide bottom-paint with two layers was tough!:o To quote from the captain's 2011 blog:"The final silicon layer will be applied this afternoon and curing time will take 24 hours. Silicon paint helps us with fuel economy as it reduces drag on the hull." I imagine the slow season and the temperate Bahama climate are essential to a 'good cure'. AS the captain points out, the silicone layer will reduce the AHR factor (average hull roughness) which considerably "improves fuel consumption; improve tight transit times; and reduces late arrivals." Boat bottom paint (biocides etc) is heavily regulated these days and is every boatman's major pain... On a large vessel doing over 15 knots: "The silicone application $ave$ 4% fuel costs and reduces the Friction coefficient by 38% with a reduction of 50% accumulated bottom slime!" Clearly a major cruise-line's budget consideration every four years! OK Mr. Smartypants. According to the color code I've seen in the past I counted thirteen shots of chain on the floor of the drydock. We used to have the entire second to the last shot painted yellow and the entire last shot painted red. How many are left on that scow?
We normally carried 7 in one locker 8 in the other and I thought that was a lot.

Well I'm not up on a commercial vessel over 65 feet but on a boat such as mine An easy-to-recall mnemonic for remembering the order of your chain markings is “Rub Your Body With Oil,” which mimics the order of your paint colors: red, yellow, blue, white, orange.(:hmmm: I'll have to discuss that with my Capt??!!) So by the time you’ve seen the white marker go through the windlass, you know that you have 100 feet of chain out. In Jimbuna's shot with the yellow links, I note the 60 fathom detachable red link prior to the 'yellow' partially exposed shot:
15 fathoms (1 shot). The detachable link IS painted red, and one link on each side is painted white.
30 fathoms (2 shots). The detachable link is painted white, and two links on each side are painted white.
45 fathoms (3 shots). The detachable link is painted blue, and three links on each side are painted white.
60 fathoms (4 shots). The detachable link is painted red, and four links on each side are painted white.
75 fathoms (5 shots). The detachable link is painted white, and five links on each side are painted white
Paint each link in the next to last shot yellow. The yellow alerts you that you are running out of chain. Paint each link in the last shot red. Note: 1 fathom = 6 feet. There are 15 fathoms (90 feet) in a shot of anchor chain. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/army/fm/55-501/image1611.gif
And tell him Jim that he's one strong SOB to hold up the ship like that so it doesn't fall on the dry-dock floor. He must be related to "Popey the Sailorman" somehow. Even with those skinny forearms. ;)
At least he's doing something he enjoys, and gets a lot of free travel. Tell him we ALL said Merry Christmas.

I grew up with NAVSEA SYS and links according to it were painted red, white, blue, red white, blue and so on. On the picture above I counted 13 white links on eitherside of the red link with no yellow or red in sight. Thats damn near the total amount we carried in both chain lockers!
I was just wondering what the total length was on Eurodam.
Aktungbby
12-25-15, 02:52 AM
Computing the individual size of the links to drydock keel-block(photos) height...each link is nearly 2ft in length. Queen Mary carried this anchor chain: Length of Anchor Chain=990 ft;
Weight of Anchor Chain=45 tons
Anchor Chain Link=2 ft. (61 cm.) long, weighing 224 LB. (101.8 kg.) That's 165 fathoms or 11 'shots' of anchor chain. QM was longer but less gross tonnage than MS Eurodam: 81,237 vs 86,700 tons :hmmm: and if U lose that chain you'll need one of these BBY's to drag and snag it!

Just had a FaceTime chat with him, his ship is now off the west coast of Cuba heading for Key West.
There was a garbage silo fire onboard at 1am this morning but everything was quickly brought under control after the heat/smoke sensors did there job and raised the alarm.
On the plus side, he informed his mom and I that part of last weeks refit included the installation of 50" smart tv's in each of the officers cabins and he reversed the camera angle to show us some of the options, his favourite being NetFlix which allows him access to series such as Game Of Thrones.
He'll be late to this evenings Christmas Gala Dinner because his watch is 7pm till midnight but coincidentally, his junior officer on the bridge is someone who lives in Seaton Delaval which is only six miles north of here.
Merry Christmas son :sunny:

I didn't know that captains had to stand watch.
Ask your son if he takes control of the ship in every port upon arrival
or departure or does the port captain come aboard and do that?
Perhaps in some ports he has all of the load on his shoulders and that is a heavy load ...
I saw one cruise ship on youtube that missed the dock with a quick turn by only five feet ... that was close.
Congradulations on having a great son too Jim :yep:

He's not the Captain, he's Chief Mate/First Officer (one rank below Captain).
You're correct, the Captain doesn't perform a watch but is on call 24/7.
The Captain is always on the bridge when entering or leaving port and stands alongside the Port Captain/Pilot and can overrule any decision at any time if they, the Captain feel the need.
Congradulations on having a great son too Jim

Sorry sometimes I read too fast
Still a gret job being first mate on his way to being a captain which I hear takes about 12 years.
Every country has it's own Merchant Marine with the ships being registered wherever they can find a country cheap enough to register.
Like your sons ship is registered in the Bahama's, right?
I found this information about the US Merchant Marine and ships registered in the USA are very expensive.
America only has about 200 ships left due to the high cost of having to pay higher wages.
http://www.baltimoresun.com/bal-te.bz.sealift06aug06-story.html
The largest expense onboard an American ship is the crew. Any vessel flagged in the United States must employ Americans, who demand American wages.
An able seaman on a U.S.-flagged vessel typically makes at least $40,000 a year, and officers can make $120,000 or more.
A sailor from the Philippines can make as little as $435 a month.

@You all....many thanks for the kind comments, they are greatly appreciated.
I could have got a job on one of these cruise ships
It happened some years ago. Was sitting in the waiting hall waiting for the ferry to Denmark.
Was shifting from English, Danish Swedish and some German(not fluently)
When a well dressed man asked me If I could French and or Spanish
Said I'm sorry but no, only a few words in these languages, why ?
He said his name and what he was(can't remember the title) and the name of the company and the cruise ship he was on.
This is from the memory
He said: You a very good with people and you speak some language very well. We always need that type of people, they are hard to find.
We talked some minutes more and said farewell there after.
Sorry for this little off topic story.

Update:
Some of you will know that my son James currently works as a Deck Officer for Holland America Line, a part of the larger Carnival Cruise Line Company. About a month ago he was asked if he was interested in promotion to Senior First Officer on a brand new ship (Seabourn Encore) that is currently under construction a few miles outside of Venice for another of the group companies, Seabourn Cruise Line.
http://encore.seabourn.com/
http://www.cruisecritic.co.uk/reviews/review.cfm?ShipID=1068
No interview was necessary because of his previous service and qualifications as well as the fact the captain of the ship had requested he be invited.
So to cut a long story short, he finished his contract yesterday and was met by a company official as he stepped off the Euro Dam in Venice and was taken to the company two bedded apartment (in Venice) he will be living in until the ship commences her first voyage in the new year (she is currently two month behind schedule).
His first task was to go to the supermarket in the small Fiat car he has the use of with the Euros 250 he was given to stock up the fridge and freezer then shower and get ready for the arrival of one of the company managers who were going to take him out for a meal that evening.
During the meal he couldn't stifle the odd yawn and when asked if he was tired he replied that it had been a busy few weeks preparing reports for his relief/replacement.
He was then asked how long he had been away and upon informing the manager he hadn't been home since the end of May was asked if he would like a week off.
James thought he was being offered a week off in his apartment in Venice and promptly replied in the affirmative. The manager then took out his mobile and rang the company head office in California and instructed them to book a return flight Business Class.
Sooooo, late last night his mom received a call from him informing us he was flying Venice to Paris then Paris to Newcastle this morning.
We picked him up and he is in our home now (he's just had a few words with Steve on Skype) and returns to Venice next Monday.
Life is so hard sometimes
Congratulations to James on the promotion and new ship!

Tell James to be carefull when he leaves port :o
The Carnival Vista, the largest cruise ship in Carnival’s fleet, pulled out of the Port of Messina in Sicily, Italy, recently with quite the head of steam, leaving an estimated $280,000 worth of damage in its wake. Literally. As the 134,000-ton cruise ship pulled out of port, its engines churned up the water and created a mini-tsunami that slammed into the Marina del Nettuno. The strong wake overturned concrete docks that sank boats, as shown in the amazing CCTV footage above provided by the Daily Mail. The $780,000 cruise ship that launched in May continued on its merry way apparently oblivious to the destruction it left behind

Yeah, from the video link you sent me that's normal, we do exactly the same for that port. You need to build up speed fast otherwise the current which is generally setting you to the north carries you onto the breakwater which would not be a good day.
You find during the summer months they put out extra floating pontoons around the ports, as the ships are getting bigger they generate more power in their propulsion to get the ship moving.
So yeah, sods law really.

His next vessel (when completed) is a good 40,000 tons smaller so it probably won't be such an issue.

^ I see he is currently on his way to Half Moon Cay (Little San Salvador) in the Bahamas.
This is a tiny private island owned by the company and a place he describes as "A real paradise, a heaven on earth" and the place he spent this christmas day on.

Other than two daily visits whilst in the Tyne unfortunately not but in all honesty I reckon that is down to his parents (wife mainly) being unable to book annual leave at the most opportune time. Come the true retirement (free of all part-time work) we (the wife and I) are looking forward to some quality time aboard.
Hopefully when that time comes the wife won't be wandering around the ship stalking him but rather letting him get on with his duties unhindered :)

About your wife stalking him Jim while he's working, how realistic is it that she will stop doing that!?! :) You know what they say, a woman's work is never done!:D

After WWIII they should make this way of tracking vessel's a law for warships and submarines too.
Do submarines have transponders?
You mean the kind they can turn off?...

Automatic identification system - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Identification_System
The automatic identification system (AIS) is an automatic tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels
Yes, the one for ships is a law. So I suppose submarines don't have one for navigation, but they do have emergency orange beacons that flash all the time when navigating.
