The Washington Post
Ever since it was launched from the temple-like headquarters of the National Geographic Society in Washington in 1888, National Geographic magazine has illuminated the world’s hidden places and revealed its natural wonders.
On Wednesday, the iconic yellow-bordered magazine, beset by financial issues, entered its own uncharted territory. In an effort to stave off further decline, the magazine was effectively sold by its nonprofit parent organization to a for-profit venture whose principal shareholder is one of Rupert Murdoch’s global media companies.
In exchange for $725 million, the National Geographic Society passed the troubled magazine and its book, map and other media assets to a partnership headed by 21st Century Fox, the Murdoch-controlled company that owns the 20th Century Fox movie studio, the Fox television network and Fox News Channel.Under the terms announced Wednesday, Fox will control 73 percent of the operation, called National Geographic Partners, with the balance held by the National Geographic Society. The partnership, based in Washington, will include a portfolio of National Geographic-branded cable TV channels, digital properties and publishing operations, most notably the magazine that has advanced the society’s founding mission — “the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge.” So now one of the most well known magazine in the world is now owned by Rupert Murdoch. I now feel totally ashamed to have an account on National Geographic's website. Here's a pair of articles by the Washington Post on this. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/national-geographic-society-sets-biggest-layoff-in-its-history/2015/11/03/2966e1b4-8252-11e5-a7ca-6ab6ec20f839_story.html https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/national-geographic-magazine-shifts-to-for-profit-status-with-fox-partnership/2015/09/09/7c9f034e-56f0-11e5-8bb1-b488d231bba2_story.html

Sad news, indeed. Too many of the fine magazines and periodicals have gone away or become little more than some corporate shills. I remember the days when you had to be 'nominated' for membership in the National Geogarphic Society so you could receive those precious, glorious volumes each month. Now, NatGeo is little more than a slightly more 'smart' reality-show and, with Murdoch/Fox in the driver's seat, the intelligence level can be expected to lower even more...

RIP, indeed, National Geographic, the world is lessened by your passing...

On one hand it is sad, but on the other, I can't remember the last time I looked at a NatGeo magazine, even at the doctor's office.

I almost wish the entire magazine would go away and die a dignified death rather than suffer what Rupert will do to it.

:Kaleun_Crying: Man! I collect those mags and have them in my living room going back to 1951! They're like a primary source of info. :damn:

I can't help thinking of this great George Carlin moment.
Please excuse him his "french", you know just how "un-PC" he was.

BTW, what he said is valid worldwide, not just in the U.S.

The audio in that video is a crime against humanity. So I'll just mentally insert a George Carlin type reaction in my mind.

I don't get it National Geographic was already a sinking ship, it has bled out, no money, crap management, one foot in the grave the other on a banna peel.

Ya'all should have been ashamed long before ol'Rupert got involved. When they started running shows about Doomsday Preppers, Chasing UFOs, and Rednecks that should have told you something was already very very wrong. One thing I read Murdoch did do was to start firing the nitwits which drove National Geographic into the dirt.

Well you're talking about partly about the TV shows, which I never watched or really cared that much about anyways since History already has shows about Rednecks and UFOs. The magazine on the other hand was respected the world over for it's articles and stunning photographs, now it'll probably end up as some tabloid rag sitting next to the likes of National Inquirer. If it wasn't for National Geographic I probably would of never taken up photography in the first place.

I tend to agree, give Murdoch a chance, he surely can't make it any worse....can he?

I never met the man. But according to some media sources he's satan incarnate, evil, out to destroy National Geographic and the world. And as we all know media always reports the unbiased truth dont they or being a business themselves do they just tell you what you want to hear so you tune in more often? :hmmm:

You mean like "Fox News: Fair And Balanced" unbiased? :haha:

Say, does anybody else, besides me, remember when Murdoch bought up MySpace and declared he was going to make it the biggest thing since sliced bread? Wonder how that all worked out?... :hmmm: :03:

Also if you look at the stuff he's owned in the past you realize he's more in it to make money then political stance. He's owned left-leaning companies that stayed the same stance or heck went even further left with him owning it. Murdoch would know trying to turn Nat Geo into another branch of Fox would cause it to lose all the money which is something he doesn't want.

If he knows nothing else, he knows how to make money.

This could help illustrate the difference between mathematics and reality.

Mathematically, there is a chance that Rupert might not mess this up.

In reality, yeah, he is gonna mess this up. :D
