Hi Subsim

I'm brand new to this forum and I hope I can ask you some questions about the Silent Hunter game series.

I played alot og Silent Service as a child, and I now I want to play the sub genre again :-)
Problem is that I really dont know what Silent Hunter game I want to play, and thats where I hope you can help me alittle :-)
I could not find a "beginner" forum, so I took the chace to make my post in this one.

I really like to play some sub games again, but I really dont know what game I should play... I see alot of reviews saying that SH3 is the best game but with outdated Graphic, and SH5 is more arcade and full of bugs, and SH4 is like SH3 just with better graphic and playing as a US boat... all this not making it easy for me to decide.

I was thinking if I told you guys what I like in a game you could maybe tell me what game is the closest to that?

I'm not a sub nerd, so I dont need a 100% sim where all is like 100% real life.

What i like:
1. A campaign...So some kind of progression in the game, on the crew and sub (xp, medals, skills, new wapons, upgrades, new subs and so on)

2. Easy to sail sub. I'm not a sub sim nerd who know everything about a sub and how it works :-)

3. Easy to use map.. As i remember it, you use ALOT of the time on the map in sub games, so I like it to show enemy contact, with the white tail so I can see what way they are sailing and so on, I dont want it to be me who has to find out what bearing and so on.

3. attacking, I like some help in targeting and using my topedos, I will never hit, if the game wants me to calculate the speed, range and so on on a enemy for the topedo to hit.

So I think I just want a game that are more arcadish than hardcore sim, or have options to make it a little more easy than most hardcore fans maybe wants.

Hope someone in here can t help me alittle with this, so I can go buy the best game for me :-)

Silent Hunter III might be old, but is still a very popular game to play, with heart stopping action in some parts.

Silent Hunter IV, is a very nice game as well, both games really cover the war in whole. The mods available for both games, makes them the best two sub sims still out there.

I play both, and I recommend you try out both games, as they are cheap to buy now.

I have played both SH3 & SH4 but, prefer SH3. The biggest knock against SH4 is the long sailing distance to get to where the action is. SH3 has adjustable realism setting, so you can start out on easy and adjust them up as you gain experience. It will still have a learning curve though but, not that bad of one.

I agree, SH3 is probably the best way to go.

New captain friendly with many adjustable options.

I didn't like SH4 mostly because they cheaped out on the U-boat (type 9) graphics, that is, the control room layout on the German boat looks the same as the American boat (which we all know is not true).

Also, my older system had some lag issues with the greater amount of graphics to process, for example, the sea floor has more detail with rocks, coral reefs, and undulating terrain than SH3.

In all, I could recommend Silent Hunter 3 for anyone interested in submarine simulations.

Yes I could see who the long sailing distances would be bad for a new player :-)

Can you guys tell me what it is that is making SH3 so much better than SH4 and 5 and why you think SH5 is the worst game of the 3?
Because when I read about the games, it looks like SH5 have all the elements I like, easy arcadish gameplay, some campaign progress, xp for crew and so on, does SH3 also have this stuff?

In some ways that is true. SH3 has had the most mods made for it, which gives you a lot of choices. SH4 does have some actual improvements, but a couple of things were accidentally made worse. SH5 is certainly the best looking of the group, but has even more new problems.

That said, there are mods that fix the major problems of all of them, even SH5.

What i like:
1. A campaign...So some kind of progression in the game, on the crew and sub (xp, medals, skills, new wapons, upgrades, new subs and so on)
With SH3 you get a fluid campaign that lets you upgrade your boat over the course of the war, including getting an entirely new boat from time to time.

SH4 does the same.

SH5 is limited to four different versions of the same boat, the Type VII. If that doesn't bother you then it's certainly a good choice to consider.

2. Easy to sail sub. I'm not a sub sim nerd who know everything about a sub and how it works :-)
All three can work for you in that case. There are easy modes and hard modes, and you can choose which elements you want to include in your game.

3. Easy to use map.. As i remember it, you use ALOT of the time on the map in sub games, so I like it to show enemy contact, with the white tail so I can see what way they are sailing and so on, I dont want it to be me who has to find out what bearing and so on.
Again, all three will let you do that. You can play on the easiest levels, which do all of the work for you.

3. attacking, I like some help in targeting and using my topedos, I will never hit, if the game wants me to calculate the speed, range and so on on a enemy for the topedo to hit.
Same thing. Unless you want more, the easy levels in SH3 and SH4 let you look at the target and see a little triangle that tells you if it's a good or bad shot. All you have to do is pull the trigger.

SH5 may be a little more difficult. I'm not sure, since I only played it for a little bit a long time ago.

So I think I just want a game that are more arcadish than hardcore sim, or have options to make it a little more easy than most hardcore fans maybe wants.
No problem there. The games are designed to let you make it as easy or as difficult as you want.

Yes I could see who the long sailing distances would be bad for a new player :-)
One of the improvements in SH4 is a much better time compression system. You can travel those long distances a lot more easily.

Can you guys tell me what it is that is making SH3 so much better than SH4 and 5 and why you think SH5 is the worst game of the 3?
Those judgments are based on historical realities. SH3 has a lot of options and a lot of great mods that let the player do what he wants with it.

SH4 expands on this somewhat, but because of its closeness in time to SH3 never got the chance for development. Also a lot of players, and more importantly modders, just aren't that interested in the American submarine war.

SH5 gets rid of some of SH3's better elements, such as a full crew with names and jobs, and leaves you with just key personnel to give orders to. To many of us it seems more limited and less "real" in feel. On the other hand it sounds like that is what you're looking for, so SH5 is probably the way to go for you.

Because when I read about the games, it looks like SH5 have all the elements I like, easy arcadish gameplay, some campaign progress, xp for crew and so on, does SH3 also have this stuff?
Yes it does, but the way it is applied is different. It's really a matter of what you want from your game experience. A lot of people love SH5.

Thx alot Steve, it was a post like that one I hoped to see :-)

Look like SH3 have all the stuff I would like, campaign, xp progression, upgrades and so on, but I just get alittle scared about how the graphic is 2015.

As a last thing, can you explain to me what the mods do to the game? just the top 5-10 mods you would recommend to install.. Do they bring all new gameplay or is it just graphic or something else? Cuz I dont want to sail in ships or fly planes or some wird stuff like that, and I'm not going to care if the mods just make a topedos swim at 20 knop and not 19˝, again i'm not a hardcore sub player :-)

For SH3? There are several 'Supermods' that change everything. They are mostly devoted to either gameplay or graphics, or both. The best way to go is with one of the supermods. Which one you choose depends on what you want from the game.

Here is a comparison I made some years ago.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1858430&postcount=3

As for smaller mods, there are literally hundreds of them. There is no top 10, or top 5. There are as many different mod combinations as there are players.

Here are some mods lists of some players. As far as my list goes, it changes almost every time I play, as I'm always trying out something new. If you have any questions about any of the mods, just ask them here.

I can read that most people like the GWX mod, so do I really need to install the game and what SH game is the "best" with no mods?

If I install GWX, will i change the game so much that I get new menu's and interfaces ingame so the tutorial does not work anymore, or is it more opgraded textures and enemy behavior it changes?

If I understand your questions correctly, then yes, you do need to install the game first.

With no mods at all? SH3 works fine unmodded. SH4 not so much. SH5 will run with no mods, but I don't think anyone ever liked it that way.

The changes are all internal. You can still play all the tutorials, though the anti-aircraft one is suddenly very hard to beat. That's okay, though, because whereas in the stock game each class gives you a little renown, with GWX you only have to pass the Navigation course to get the full 1500 points. Everything else is just for practice and fun.

I have now got the game SH3 and installed the addon GWX, but i have big black boarders left and right on my monitor.
I can see there is no menu to set resolution in the game, but can I do something in the addon and how do I do that?

I recommend you download and install Conus widescreen mod (activate it just after gwx). In addition to widescreen support it adds a nice clicking sound when you turn the periscope .

And since I guess you would not be fond of Crew micromanagement you could also install sh3 commander to easily deactivate crew fatigue. Then they never get tired.

Best regards and fette Beute!

You will need a widescreen mod such as that mentioned in the post above.

Personally I don't use one (24" widescreen monitor set at a resolution of 1920x1080).
