:woot::salute: "when you come to a fork in the road... take it!" was his other quote. https://scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/1176355_683793138326612_378159985_n.jpg?oh=7172dbc 1220725867d8d5b2213187840&oe=56A3EFDA
"Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't go to yours"
-Yogi Berra
Bet there will be a lot of people seeing Yogi off...
His "Yogi-isms" seem to be what most people remember about him, but his abilities as a professional baseball player are his true legacy and something for which he should better be remembered. The position of catcher is arguably the most physically taxing and wearing of all the field positions. Except for an injury, or a strategic change in the batting order, a catcher is in the game for the entire length of the game; only the catcher and the pitchers are actively involved in trying to defend against every single at bat by an opposing batter, and the pitchers are usually changed during the game. The catcher also is responsible for providing the pitcher with signals to select the pitch for the pitcher. The catcher also often has to defend the home plate against opposing runners, often by using his body as a barrier. Add to the mix the constant up and down of getting in and out of the crouching position behind the plate and a catcher's lot is not a walk in the park. Yogi was an expert at his position and a true legend as a baseball player. Over the years, his feats as a player have been overshadowed, both by the pubic perception of Yogi as a personality and by more modern catchers with flashier styles or PR machines. But yogi was the 'real deal', a player's player. He played in 14 Worlds series games in his career and was a major contributor to his team's efforts. If you wanted an image of someone to exemplify the position of catcher or, better yet, baseball itself, there are very, very few better choices than Yogi Berra...
As a baseball fan, thanks, Yogi, for calling the games, for making us smile, and for showing those who followed you what a real baseball player should be; now that you've made your final round of third base and the coach is waving you on, I know no one will be blocking home plate...

many may not have known that much about Yogi if they were younger but anyone who watched baseball in the golden era will never forget him. He was a fixture at Yankee Stadium for years mentoring new players coming up. Derek Jeter himself was one of them.
Sorry to see an Icon pass on.
Rest in peace Yogi.

I am embarrassed to say that I thought he had died a few years ago.

Sad to hear. I think this quote says it best about his playing abilities:
"When asked the secret to his success, legendary Yankee manager Casey Stengel pointed to Mr. Berra. “I never play a game without my man.”

When asked what he would do if he found a million dollars, apparently Yogi said something along the lines he'd find who'd lost it and if they were poor he'd return the money.
