View Full Version : Now SH3 isn't working....

Everytime I attempt to start a single mission, career, or go to museum its a CTD. I have GWX3.0, and one mod in JSGME - SH4 effects for SH3 w/ GWX3.0 . If its a single mission, it goes to 95% then CTD's. If its a career, it goes to maybe 45% then CTD's. The museum I don't even go to now, just because I know my game will CTD. My question is: How do I fix this?

Is it a Windows 8 problem, like on SH4?
Is it because of GWX or another mod?
Or is it just my MSI computer? (Which I'm not a big fan of)

Please respond soon. A lot of people replied on my SH4 thread, and I found the solution - I need a different version of Windows. Thanks in advance.

I had a problem similar to that once. I tried having two active captain campaigns going at the same time. When I quit and reloaded, on the SH3 title screen, it would load to about 50% and then crash, without fail, every. single. time.
I went fooling around in the SH3 folders, and manually removed the new captain that I had just created. Then I launched the game again. Things seemed to be normal after that. So your problem suggests to me that the game is looking for a particular file/path to load at that moment, and it can't find what it's looking for. Either that or it finds a conflict. Since it doesn't know which set of data to carry out, and can't make a decision intuitively based on available evidence to choose the correct file at the moment of conflict, it does nothing at all (shrugs its shoulders), and drops you back to the desk top. Other times I had gone back into the control panel settings and ran the install/uninstall option, and found a category called 'repair', so I gave that a hit, and again, it seemed to work.
Otherwise, you may have to remove the game and do a clean install. Only this time, load your selected mods one at a time to test them out. That way if you run into a conflict with the mods, you'll be able to identify and correct which one was giving you trouble much faster and with greater certainty.
I am by no means very skilled with computers any more, so, there will be others here who are more informed about the quirks of this game and what happens when you mod it. I hope you have a place to start from at least.

Apparently its a GWX problem. Maybe its SH3 Cmdr. I did not enable the SH4 effects for SH3, and my game loads to 50% and crashes. I did do a new game install - figuring maybe because I didn't use the disc, (used amazon first), it would work. But, again, it loads to 50% and CTD's.

EDIT: It seems everytime I start a Patrol in SH3Cmdr(or new career) it crashes. Same with just opening it up. Another odd thing is, the crashes seem to be date-specific and unpredictable at times. I start a career in Aug 1941, it loads up. I start it again - BOOM- Ctd. This is just weird, and I'm beginning to not even play the SH series now.

Try setting compatibility mode to Windows Vista. Had the same problem but that fixed it. I'm using 8.1.

Try setting compatibility mode to Windows Vista. Had the same problem but that fixed it. I'm using 8.1.

Or windows Xp service pack 2 as suggested in another post I read. I was also having this problem although a slightly varied mod set. I was previously changing directory/file attributes with 85% success rate but once I set properties to windows xp svpk2 compatibility with also disable scaling on high DPI checkmarked I have had a 100% loading success rate. I have now installed various mods and commander with GWX 3.0 and not had a single CTD :yeah:

As for the museum CTD I also had that happen when getting to the German forces, after reading a post its seems to be 1 of the German ships needs the file fixed <insert original post here> I have not recently attempted to load the museum since fixing my game as Im to wrapped up in enjoying my flawlessly working campaign

Again I will right here thank the mod team/s and subsim radioroom for the massive enhancements to SH3 through help and mods that have brought the quality of SH3 experience right up to todays 2015 standards of gaming. Before I purchased SH3 off steam for about $4 - $5 aussy I was playing some AAA titles such as GTA V worth $75 - $80 and since installing SH3 have not loaded any other game.....

So the savings on purchasing SH3 for so cheap leaves no excuse not to put some well earned cash into the radioroom here where its deserved. :subsim:
Most worthwhile investment into helping keep subsim sailing for many more years to come.

A year ago I was also having this problem. The answer suggested to me was the one depthtok33l and DRuSuffa suggested - set Compatibility Mode to Windows XP. I followed that advice and have been playing SH3 with a host of mods and no problems ever since. :sunny:
