I read the news report linked on the news page of subsim about Russia sending the Dmitiry Donskoy, Russia's last operating typhoon class refitted with Baluva SLBNs. Does anyone know if this is a mess-up? Russia has a lot of platforms that they could send to Syria including the ships operating in the med or the Black Sea fleet. An SSBN would be the most useless thing you could send to Syria plus your bottle necking the thing in the relatively shallow waters of the med, where it would be open to attack by the diesel boats of a dozen unstable countries.

It doesn't make sense to me, anybody got any ideas?

Throw in an exercise while the better suited units operate in the area ??
A little something more for the commanders to learn to keep an eye on.

Or more likely that they're showing some toys

Does information come from a credible source? Or is it from the same batch of source that talked about same submarine being deployed of Swedish shores when they were looking for that phantom subs?

I thought the Donskoy had been laid up now the Boreis are coming online and the new SLBMs are...sort of working. But yeah, sending a Typhoon into the Med is crazy talk, it's probably an Akula and someone has got mixed up with the NATO/Russian designations again.

Found this interesting comment from 'Tom Thumb' (scroll down to comments section).

Sputnik news is way more credible, they keep up to date with russian military news, and sending it to an exercise in the arctic makes way more sense... Maybe we should have a chat with whoever is on charge here about the accuracy of the news they repost on the home page. :)

On another note, jane360 just released news that the Kuznetsov is out of dry dock and doing after-maintenance sea trails. watch the news gents, the Russians love sending her to the med.

Also I found another great site while searching the news, there is a Turkish website where they post information about all ships that pass through the Bosporus. And since about August 20, it seems like all the landing ships in the Black Sea fleet, along with a few landing ships and 3 tugs from the Baltic fleet have been making back and forth passes. A few of them they even posted photos showing deck loaded cargo, including Gaz-66, Kazaz transport trucks, and tarped vehicles whose general outline seems to suggest BTR-82

@subnuts
Maybe call Sean Connery. He's both a super spy and a typhoon submarine captain ;)

Is that with the less than Russian accent?

We could get Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson, instead.....

Tom Hardy. I've seen him do a Russian accent in Child 44.
Thick as reduced petroleum :)

What I don't comprehend is why the EU doesnot freeze the assets of the Syrian state to pay for the mass exodus and issue a war crimes warrant against any and all parties. I notice none of refugees are headed for Russia which supports...or has supported the Assad regime; PUTIN' an unfair economic strain on Europe!. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia%27s_role_in_the_Syrian_Civil_War (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia%27s_role_in_the_Syrian_Civil_War) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/russia/11845635/Vladimir-Putin-confirms-Russian-military-involvement-in-Syrias-civil-war.html (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/russia/11845635/Vladimir-Putin-confirms-Russian-military-involvement-in-Syrias-civil-war.html) http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/03429/Putin-cat_3429903b.jpgwhat's new pussycat?:nope: Throw in the Russian and Chinese joint maneuvers in the Mediterranean of late...http://foreignpolicy.com/2015/05/15/china-russia-navy-joint-sea-2015-asia-pivot-blowback/ posted in the 'Rimpack thread' and you begin to understand "show of force 101" also known as "threat in being 101" We do it all the time too with a carrier task force:D They're just playing 'catch up'!:/\\!!https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/33/Abraham-Lincoln-battlegroup.jpg/1024px-Abraham-Lincoln-battlegroup.jpgRIMPACK 2000! So called Syrian express was ongoing for a while. Russian Navy ships are being used for various reasons, including inability of Western Navies to stop the shipments in the current situation.
