For some time I have been suffering with what appears to be a fairly common Windows 8.1 update issue - when turning my laptop off I was getting a message that said something like "Configuring Windows - dont turn off your computer" eventually it would close down but when re-booted I would get a similar blue screen with something like "Windows update failed reloading your original settings" - after several months of this, I 'Refreshed' my operating system and I now have a clean version of the latest incarnation of Windows 8.1.

Unfortunately, this meant re-installing SH3, GWX and all of my MODS but (I thought) thats OK because I have all of the original files nice and clean on a seperate disc and I know how to install everthing in the right order in a seperate directory or folder called 'Games' - not quite so!

I have managed to install them all and in the right order but having started a new career I find that whenever I save and exit the game, it will crash when I try to reload it - and annoyingly, it crashes when it has got right at the end of the lengthy load period. Previously with all the same mods, I had a very stable game with hardly any computer crashes even if I inadvertently saved the game whilst submerged.

Now I have found something odd since reloading SH3 - when I go to load a previously saved career (I number my saves according to the patrol number so if it is my seventh patrol the saves are numbered 7a, 7b, 7c and so on) I notice that the second of the two automatic 'in-base' saves appears to have been updated to a date and time just before the game crashed - and this is invariably later than the subsequent save that I am trying to reload. I am not sure if this happened before but clearly one of the files that make up this 'in base before mission' save is being over-written.

I have partially solved the problem by selecting all the SH3 files in my Documents folder and using 'Properties' to make sure that none are write protected but this is tedious - can anyone suggest which file may be causing the problem? Or better still can anyone suggest a cure?

My current MOD loadout is:

GWX - 16km Atmosphere
GWX - Enhanced Damage Effects
Spirit of machines
Torpedo damage Final ver2.0
Wooden_Lifeboats_Mod_1.1
LITE RADIO TRAFIC V1
Waterstream+Exhaust Combi V2.3 for GWX3
GWX - Merged Campaign
WBs Renown Replacement
GWX - No Medals on Crew
GWX - Integrated Orders
GWX_DFa-Flag&Pens_2010
Supplement to V16B1 (JSGME)

As previously stated - this worked extremely well before I updated Windows and re-installed the game.

OK - I think I have the answer!

I needed to execute the Windows Program Compatibility wizard and set my SH3.exe to be compatible with Win XP.

I have done this and all seems well so far - so its early April 1940 and I am off to Ofortfiord to see if I can join in the Battle of Narvik . . .
