This tutorial covers the advanced techniques used to simultaneously attack multiple targets in a convoy using manual targeting. It is intended for players of intermediate to advanced skill level. I have assumed that you already know and thoroughly understand the basics of plotting targets and using the TDC.
There is also supplemental videos that go into even more depth in the post below. Check post #3 for downloadable charts and information meant to assist you!
Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

And an equally impressive video. It perfectly illustrates my distinction between bragging and instruction. A brag video, which often poses as a tutorial, basically says "I can do this and you can't. Watch and be humbled." And usually the brag videos are about half-baked ideas where the author has cheated to set himself up with a "canned shot" so he can look good--a 4000 yard shot at a sampan or something equally nonsensical. He pulls it off, quotes Confucius for effect and signs off. Their videos are short on explanation, long on chest thumping.
Then there's yours. First you trot out the concept that it's going to be complicated but you'll take enough time to explain everything, better get a cup of coffee. You're not kidding. Then you proceed to dissect every thought process, including possible improvisation, that comes with PLANNING the attack. And you do it in real time, no cuts, you show the pacing, you show the missteps, you show the corrections, you could care less about effect because your goal is UNDERSTANDING.
So you take an hour. Big deal. The concepts are clear. The theory is carefully and thoroughly explained. When a player sees the video, so long as he understands basic stadimeter and constant bearing TDC technique, he can execute the attack flawlessly.
This is the first video in eight years to show clearly how to derive the timing for nearly simultaneous BOOMS. It's a tutorial on how to make effective tutorials where the focus is on making the student a success, not brag about superior abilities. However, you have a superior ability: how to teach.
I'd be honored if you'd allow me to link your video in the first post of the Sub Skipper's Bag of Tricks thread.
Are your lookup tables on Excel spreadsheets? It would be great if you could upload those and link them here and I'll also link them on Sub Skipper's Bag of Tricks. Those guys would be perfect for the Subsim download section.

Sure, go ahead and link me. I would prefer it if you linked the thread instead of the video directly though. There will be at least one further video, delving into even more depth, theory, and practical information, along with a couple of practice missions and reference material (the requested charts). This thread is meant to tie it all together.
Excellent work Colonel!

I'm working on the editing for video 2 right now, and put up an interim version of my charts in post #3 above for anybody that wants to get their hands on an early copy.
Subjects in video #2
Preplanning an attack during the end around
Firing envelopes
Attacking with the bow tubes and stern tubes simultaneously
Some other stuff

Consider it done. Yes, there is always more information in a thread than a single video. If anybody asks me what they should do to make a tutorial that is sufficient unto itself to teach others to be successful with their technique, this is where I send them. I wonder who (ahem!) could benefit most?:hmmm:

So you know how they say that the best way to learn something is to teach it? Well, I figured out I was kinda talking out of my backside on a big subject matter. I was nearly right for the wrong reasons and now I need to refilm a big chunk of video....

Been there, done that. I was writing something for a radio control forum, trying to explain why a three-channel plane banks with rudder (the same way as with ailerons!).
So here I am explaining how a rudder banks a plane and while making a cool vector analysis chart with Inkscape I realize I have it totally wrong. The primary effect of rudder deflection is to bank the plane AWAY from the intended direction of the turn. Then it was "Oh, crap! Now, why does the plane actually bank the correct direction?" and I was off to a much better explanation of what happens.
That's happened with Silent Hunter 4 videos and tutorials too. It's a great experience if you can swallow self-inflicted humiliation well. Ketchup helps.
Thanks for what you do, ColonelSandersLite. This is a better place because you're here.

The first supplemental video is now up (see post 2). I realized that one of my problems in making the aborted video above was that I was trying to cram too much into one video. So I have rethought my approach and decided that the supplements will be more focused.

New video on simultaneous torpedo attack envelopes is up, see post 2 for details.
Also a package with additional charts is up in post 3. Primarilly, the purpose was to supply this sheet:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y91/ColonelSandersLite/simultaneous%20attack%20envelopes_zpsdzkywpbb.jpg (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/ColonelSandersLite/media/simultaneous%20attack%20envelopes_zpsdzkywpbb.jpg. html)
Additionally, the new package contains alternate lead angle tables for people with poor eyesight. (details in post 3) I would really appreciate it if someone with poor eyesight could give feedback on them, as it's not a problem I actually have. I.E. I can say that the text is scaled at 188% with reduced clutter, but can't actually say whether or not it makes the chart more useful to you.
Thanks CSL! One thing you forgot to mention though, is how the most carefully laid out plans and calculations can go right down the tubes with a boat load of duds! I found this out the hard way in a recent convoy attack in May of 42' North of Formosa:wah: Looking forwards to more videos!

I actually have talked about it a little in the video I'm working on editing right now. I also plan to talk about it more later as well.
The next video (probably up sometime sunday evening) will be on attacks where you mix the bow and stern tubes.
The video after will probably be about checking torpedo paths and line of sight.
The next, and probably final, will be sort of a miscellaneous thoughts and considerations that don't warrant a full video.

New supplemental video up. Checking Torpedo Paths And LOS When Shooting Across Columns. See Post 2 for details.
Great job CSL! :yeah:
I've watched all the videos and they're superb, I've learned a lot from them. But unfortunately I live in one of the "gamefront blocked countries" and cannot download your charts, neither your stopwatch. Could you please upload them in another file server, like Mega?
Best regards.

And the thread is linked in Sub Skipper's Bag of Tricks (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1025180&postcount=1). This is way too important to let it slide down the pages into oblivion. Great work! Keep it up.

New video up. This one covers miscellaneous topics that don't individually warrant a video, and takes it up to eleven with a quadruple attack that uses practically everything in all the videos. This will probably be the final video in the series with a couple of possible exceptions.
First, if someone where to bring to my attention something very important that I didn't mention, I might be inclined to make a video on it should it be warranted.
Second, if I get a bunch of questions not already answered in the videos, I might be willing to do a Q&A video at a later date.
I haven't finalized the archive yet, but will try to get it done and uploaded tonight or tomorrow.
Wow, I am watching this thread from work and cant wait to get home and see it properly. Looks amazing
Could you please list the mods you are using?
is it he U-Boat expansion?

Update:
Replaced temporary versions of the reference materials with a semi-finalized version of the reference materials archive. I say semi-finalized because I will also include any material I create at a later date in the same archive.
I'm sorry this took me so long to get around to. Honestly, I got bit by the dwarf fortress bug and just had to play it.

Hi Col.
I was wondering if you would have any example on how to do this without map contacts?
Thanks! :salute:

The methods presented in supplement 1 totally disconnect the process of plotting the targets from the process of planning the attack, which is very important if the target changes course. It also has the benefit of making the planning process completely identical whether map contacts are enabled or not. The target(s) are just plotted according to your normal procedure either way.
Does that help? If not, what in particular are you having difficulty with?

I was just wondering how will you do all that plotting without map contacts. I have tried obtaining beargins and distances using the radar myself, and for sure you will not be able to obtain a perfect 3x3 box convoy as if map contacts was enable. Is it possible? :hmmm:
