Hey everyone, I've had a problem with SHIV for the last few months.
I was playing it fine about a year ago, then I got a new MSI Computer. I put the disc (it was with the U-Boat add-on) in the slot, and I got ''You have new apps that can open this type of file'' or something like that. So, I clicked that, and then clicked Run SH4autorun.exe (or whatever its called),
and the installer popped up. So I clicked accept with the agreement, basically did it normal. After its done installing, I click the desktop icon and
What? Nothing happens? It does the little disc loading/thinking ''icon'', and then disappears (the loading ''icon''.) I go to task manager, and it says under processes and NOT apps, Silent Hunter IV (32 bit). I end the task and repeat the process. Same thing. I research on the ubi forums and here, and it says not to install under the program files x86. So I uninstall it, reinstall it in its own folder, and repeated the process of clicking it and hoping to play the game. Again. The loading ''icon'' spins and loads, and nothing happens except seeing my desktop normal. By now, I'm angered. I have played the game for at least a year, and now a SHIV is not working on a GAMING computer. That was when I had Windows 7. A few months later, I pick up a virus and have to reset my PC. After that, I remember about SHIV, and do everything again, and then... nothing. Again and again nothing. My PC also installed Windows 8, on my computer. (And SHIV was working on my old computer on windows 7.) So then I try every single option in troubleshooting. Nothing works. By now I'm thinking, maybe my disc is bad. So I go on amazon and buy and download the regular wolves of the pacific. After all this, installing, the SAME thing happens AGAIN. And I am just furious now, I spent $9.00 for a game that won't even run. Here I am now, still figuring it out. I need help to figure this out, ANY help is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had a similar thing happen when I reinstalled on a new hard drive (same system othwerwise) a couple weeks ago. Oddly enough, I can still open it through Steam...

Sorry I have no answers for you

You're going to need to post your specs if you want any chance of somebody helping you out.

First question. The hard drive you are installing this onto is it the same hard drive you had before or did you scrap it and are using a completely new hard drive?

If this is the same hard drive you had before the new OS did you do a complete format of the entire drive before installing the new OS?

When I had SHIV working, it was on my old computer. That computer's screen is now blue and black (Literally.) So I got rid of that one, and did not take the hard drive. So I am using a completely ''new'' hard drive - I have had this computer for 8 months figuring the problem out and still haven't figured it out.

If you were using Windows 7 or 10 you'd be fine but Windows 8 has issues running SH and Dark Waters.

You might find relief here however.

Try making your own shortcut to sh4.exe.

Sometimes shortcuts go to gu.exe, and this can cause problems.

It is not an app.
It is a manual installation from the dvd to the hard drive.
You should be given the choice of where to install it even if you only have the 1 drive.

SH usually defaults to install in the Program Files (x86) folder.
You do not want to install it there.
You use the browse button in the dvd installation and make and name a new folder and put it on the C drive or on to any other drive if you have one.

When installed you should be able to see it in your control panel's programs and features.

I would advise running your SHIV.exe application as administrator and also JSGME as well.

It may not make a difference, but in addition to the above hints, when you load the CD, go to the Start and Run command, browse to the CD, and run the Setup.exe instead of the Autorun. Run Setup as Administrator, and as previously pointed out, place in a directory other than where the installer wants to put it. I use C:/Games/Ubisoft/SH4...works for me. Good luck, and Welcome Back Aboard. :salute:

The problem here is probably one of two things.

It's possible that this is a permissions issue. Make sure you're running the game as an administrator.

The (imho) more likely problem is the NVIDIA GeForce 840M. Laptop video cards often have issues with PC games.

It might be that the game is trying to load in a resolution that's incompatible with your video card. Check "C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\SH4\data\cfg\main. cfg". You can find the resolution setting under the [VIDEO] header. Try changing the first two numbers to the current desktop resolution.

It also might be something that's solvable by a specific driver version. I don't know if anybody here is successfully using that specific video card. If someone is, it would be nice to know what driver version they're running.

This is going to be it. My money is on TorpX

Ah didn't even see that. Definitely worth checking that the shortcut is pointing at the right exe.

The Wifi switch being the solution makes absolutely no sense at all. You sure your pc shouldn't still be in sickbay?

Either that's a pure coincidence or most likely a driver issue. If your wifi is built into your motherboard, be sure and update all drivers with the most recent directly from the manufacturer.
