I've not played the US campaign in SH4, just the U-Boat campaign. One feature that I did like was the ability for the captain (after I think his second promotion) to call for a plane to scout areas that were en route (and within the airbase's range)

This gave me a chance to get a few kills on the way home from a patrol that I might not otherwise have found on my own.

There was also the ability to call in a support ship (cruiser?) I never found this very useful but perhaps I wasn't using it wisely.

Does the U.S. Campaign have these abilities as well?

Are there other/different abilities that the captain gets?

Are any of them (outside of the scouting one) particularly useful?

There are captain's abilities, but for the U.S. you must gain experience and promotions for your higher ranking crew members in order for them to gaina special ability.

No. Those are only in the German side of the game.

Yeah, Razark has it right. Hursh is talking about something else.

Sadly though, it's something I've always wanted for the US campaign. Imagine calling in an airstrike from a nearby carrier group to devastate a convoy. That would be pretty sweet.

That would be great. But the crew special abilities are something imported directly from the comic books and have no place in a simulation. When I get the dude who can load a torpedo in 20 seconds he's the first one in a torpedo tube to be launched at the next target. Fire one! End of problem....:haha:
