Jimmy Carter, Who is the 39th U.S president has revealed he is fighting cancer. The 90 year old former president underwent surgery last week to remove a small mass from his liver. Unfortunately, President Carter's family has a history of pancreatic cancer. His father, 2 sisters and his brother Billy Carter also succumbed to cancer. President Jimmy Carter was the force behind the peace talks between Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Menachem Begin of Israel. This peace and understanding endures today because of the vision of all 3 men. Sadly , Anwar Sadat was assassinated in his own Country of Egypt for being a man of peace.
Jimmy Carter was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his decades of untiring efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights and to promote economic and social development. He was internationally recognized and was more active in humanitarian efforts after his presidency ended , never having let grass grow beneath his feet.
In recognition of his achievements, The U.S honored him with the third and last Seawolf-class submarine being named after him . USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23 was launched on May 13, 2004,
Best wishes to President Carter and His wife Rosalynn and his daughter Amy as he fights the biggest battle of his life

Hoping he will overcome and recover.
Of all the Presidents of the 20th century, Jimmy Carter is and will remain, the one President who most used the influence of his former office in the aid of humanitarian pursuits. His Nobel was well deserved in 2002 and he has done even more since then to further burnish his legacy. I very much admire that he doesn't just talk the talk, he also walks the walk. I wish him the best going forward and hope he makes a good recovery...

I'll always have a soft spot for Jimmy. Even if he often seemed to be in over his head. :D

May not think he was the best president or even a decent one but I can't dispute the fact that he's done more post-office to help humanity then any other president. Here's hoping you get better Jimmy. :salute:
I have a Presidential Sports Award with his signature on it.

Lousy President and then graduated to the best ex-President in history. He leveraged his former office to do good for humanity. We wish him the best.
Anyone remember the giant rabbit attack of 1979?

Terrible President, followed a flawed and failed ideology but truly a good man, which is RARE among politicians. Hope things go well for him and he sticks around a while. The only Democratic President I would love to meet.

I was mad at Jimmy for many years due to his canceling the best bomber ever built the B-1 bomber, but now I see that he had insight from advisors telling him about the B-2 and how much less it would cost over it's life span.
How do they pre-figure how long a plane made to bomb someone will last?
Anyway he was right and I was wrong ... I forgive you Mr President may you never give up even when facing cancer.
One good thingI thought Jimmah did was to force the navy to buy a bunch of fast transports instead of another carrier like they had wanted. They sure came in handy getting our equipment over to the gulf during Desert Shield.

I don't even think he was that bad of a president. He was up against a lot of tough problems in a horrible economy. I am sure he did the best he could.
But I do feel he is the best ex-president we have had in my lifetime.
He didn't get America into any costly wars, he helped reduce nuclear weapons levels, created the Superfund to deal with environmental disasters on US soil, and helped create a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.
Honestly, the US has had far worse presidents, admittedly there were bungles in foreign and domestic policy, but as Platapus put it, he got thrown several pretty damn hard balls and it wasn't as if he didn't try to hit them.
Heck, it was down to this that we got the crazy YMC-130H which is a plane that just looks at the laws of physics and shrugs.

I'm sure no one means to be disrespectful. It's human nature to face adversity with humor. For the most part, everyone has wished President Carter well. As with any public figure, it's hard if not impossible to separate someone from who they are and what they did. That is of course how we know them. As you pointed out, he served in uniform as a submariner . I pointed this out as well http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=221362
Like you, I feel he is deserving of respect, having served in uniform. That same respect is due anyone who has served their country in a similar capacity. Having been a sitting president though, people being people will look back in retrospect and let history decide their ultimate successes and failures.
I think most pointed out what they liked and disliked of President Carter's Presidency and why. We all wish him well. I felt he was a man of deeply rooted principals and integrity and I think most here agreed with that but everyone is free to form their own opinions . Any time you have a public forum and write publicly , there will be opposing viewpoints and we should welcome that.
As you and I and most said. We wish President Carter well and celebrate his enormous achievements.

This thread is a heck of a lot more respectful than the thread where someone posted that the tumor that killed Ted Kennedy should have been awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom. :nope:

Wait seriously? I can understand why some people not might be all that respectful of Ted Kennedy upon his death(Chappaquiddick the main reason) but to say something like that?:nope:

Ay, tumors (plural) in the brain that metastasized from his previous liver cancer? Does not sound good :( Certainly wishing him all the best, that's quite a brave fight to put up, especially at his age.
Heard Jimmy Carter make his statement on his condition on the radio today. I can only hope to be as mentally cogent and lucid when I reach his age, not to mention as emotionally composed in dealing with such a dire prognosis.
Regarding alleged disrespect to Carter in this thread, I offer this as a counter:

If one wished for an example of grace under pressure, just look at Carter and how he has dealt with the bad hands he has been dealt...
