Don't know about III or V yet, but in a couple of different threads in the SH4 Forum some people have said they have SH4 up and running on 10. :D

I started using Win 10 today. I have been playing SH 5, WOS. No problems so far. I just continued on with the game I had started in Win 8.1

Yes, I had that problem. The UbisoftGameLauncher that installs with the game is not enough. You must go online to your Uplay account and download the UbisoftGameLauncher App and install it all over again. It will give direct access to the log onto UPlay through a dialog box.

Once you have the dialog box you can click the gear box to change settings. Go to Network settings and check the box to 'Always start Uplay in offline mode'. After that is done you can run the game without bothering with Uplay.

Also if anyone is running Windows 10 or 8 you may have to change the SH5.exe properties | Compatibility and check 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings' ...as well as.... 'Run as administrator'

Hmm I get kind of a semi start up in Win 10,, I have Up play from the Boxed start up, online turned off and I get the start up video sequence and that's it, when it ends nothing more happens.

I am having the same issue. The intro will come on in the top left with no sound or anything. Once into is over it goes back to uplay and not to the game. Once you hit play game in uplay it does the same thing:/\\!!

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had a similar issue , would CTD after loadscreen into game , Was fixed when i realised that ubisoft launcher wasnt updating game to 1.2.. I went to the files and found the autoupdater . fixed .. ummm ,, Ubisoft/silent hunter 5 /support /gameupdater... You will see the icon that is an application .. run it .. ..

.after a couple of years i'm finally back to play again my old SH3..... Missed a lot !!! But i have a new laptop.....with win 10...... Because i have an old original dvd dated 2005 or 2006..... I don't know why i find an error on the installation process....error 1630...... The dvd runs, but it stops almost immediatly and i can't complete
The installation. ....can somebody help me ???? It's my favourite game.....

I have just managed to get SH5 up and running on Win 10 after an absence of 5 years. SH5 looks great on my 34in widescreen monitor.
Now to start with modding. Just downloaded the JSGME mod installer.
Where do you recommend I go from here?

I also have original boxed versions of SH3&4, i may have to try and get them running under Win 10 also.

Use this advice and also start the game in administrator mode. Clean install of Windows 10 and clean install of silent hunter 4 and 5. SH5 crashed. :/\\!! But the advise of exxis AND adminstrator mode: It works great. :up:

I have been playing SH5 for more than two years now , and it is working just fine on Windows 10, without any problems

So I recently purchased SH5, loved SH3 and enjoyed SH4 but wandered away for a few years and recently watched Das Boot and got inspired again :)

So the game is acting strange, and i don't know why this is happening.

So if I start UPLAY with online enabled, and then launch SH5 it won't start. I get "Unabled to download Uplay files" which i don't understand? Is SH5 trying to update itself, is it trying to synchronise with some server at ubisoft for saved games or DRM? So i disabled the online synchronization option in Uplay settings, but still no luck..

If I start UPLAY with online disabled, and then launch SH5 it does start. BUT I can only play the historical missions and look in the museum, the campaign will not start. I get the error "Internet Connection not enabled" - which it is not...

So I have uninstalled SH5 and reinstalled it, I have uninstalled Uplay and reinstalled it. I have verified the game files through Uplay, I have launched both as admins, I have check the win 10 compatibility and all looks good..

Anybody have any idea what the error "Unabled to download Uplay files" means and how can I fix it?

Tabs I see are: General, Sharing, Security, Pervious Versions, Customize.

having said that....when i did get the game to launch....it's incredibility choppy and there is no sound. I went below decks and hit F to go to periscope depth and the game immediately crashed.

Should I do the clean install thing again? I just hate doing this every time something changes.....is there anyway to do this without losing a career?

All running fine for me on Mac (Win10 via BootCamp) - I think the only thing to look out for it that the updater does not seem to work in the UPlay GUI - it fails silently.

Luckily for me I was following the instructions for installing Wolves Of Steel which include finding and running the gu.exe so I never saw it crash.

One problem for me at the moment is the font size used by the map tools (I've got a 15" screen). I've tried searching the forum to see if there's an easy way to increase this or perhaps made the numbers bold - even better would be to increase the offset from the protractor in particular. Perhaps I'm just getting old and need some bifocals, but it appears ridiculously small and difficult to read to me...

Anyone have a thread to point me to or some other advice?

Hi I have got sh3,sh4,sh5 running on windows 10 anniversary update ok but after a fresh install the documents folders now go to documents cloud as default even in offline mod and game update to 1.2 is not automatically done.

Uplay just crashes on me when I try to log in offline and reinstalling it many times hasn't changed anything. The procedure to follow on the website doesn't work for me as so just wondering if you guys have any suggestions.

Not trying to look stupid but I couldn't try the sh5.exe file trick as I can't find it so any info on that would be great.

Hello again all that I knew, and hello to ones I have yet to meet. It's been 6 years since I have been on here and 6 years since I played SH4. I never knew SH5 was released, or was a concept. I stumbled upon SH5 in the Steam Store, but read the reviews that it was bugged w/lack of any major fixes. I trust SUBSIM to give me an honest answer. How is it, really?

I was also thinking on getting SH4 again via Steam since I no longer have it (lost it somewhere over the years and house move) and I am also running Win10. How is SH4 on 10?

You may need to run Windows 10 in compatibility mode Windows 7 if you find the game crashes when loading.

I recently reinstalled Silent Hunter 5. and an unable to get the game to play.:wah:
On the first try of playing the game, after a reboot, the game crashes to the desktop after the intro animation.
After the second-fourth try,I can select the first mission, which then loads, but immediately after the loading screen I receive the following error:

"The internet connection experiences problems and the current game session was saved. Please wait until the internet connection is restored or press OK button to return to the main menu."

My internet connection if fine. I receive the same error when I use Uplay to install the game or if I use the DVD to install the game.
I have tried using Uplay in Offline mode, ran Uplay and the Silent Hunter 5 EXE in compatibility mode with admin privileges.
All will no luck getting the game to run.

My system is running Windows 10.
Silent Hunter 5 ver 1.20
No mods....yet

Fixed my issue.
I had 27 TAP Adapters installed!!

I followed the steps here (https://superuser.com/questions/790891/i-have-lots-of-tap-win32-adapter-oas-and-tap-windows-adapter-v9) which uninstalled all of them.

I was them able to get the game to work.

You would appear to be an exception as Windows 10 does not appear to be compatible with SH3.
Maybe the fact you have a new system might be the difference.

The Burbster, seems to know a lot about the game, but also seems to just post the same links over and over. Does not really help very much. I did not like all the mods, just way too much. Would prefer to just fix and play the game as it was originally designed.

He's posting same links to answer the same old questions asked over and over mostly as a result of many who can't be bothered reading guides. Anything not covered almost always gets his full attention

The game as it was originally designed was not only broken but missing a lot of the best features from the previous Silent Hunter series

There is no magic fix for SH5 its takes a little research and patience to get working , when that's done its arguably the best subsim out to date

Just installed SH4 and SH5 from disk onto Windows 10 this weekend. Haven't played either since the days of XP.

PROBLEM: If I selected full screen, they would always run cut off in a small rectangle in the upper left of the screen with no sound or ability to input commands. Running windowed was possible but kind of sucked.

SOLVED: I was running at 2560 x 1440 with 125% text scale. I set my screen resolution in windows to 1920 x 1080 with 100% scale, and both games now run full screen at this resolution with no problems.

Perhaps this may help some of you with high-res displays.

Hello, dear mates!

Havent been here for a long time, as well as in the game :)
From some sources i have heard about tWoS megamod, and I became relly exited to get back into boat and send some cigars to fat freighters :D
But I cant get my game started. I installed it via uplay, and it does not start, the uplay screen with loading symbol is hanging on the screen and thats it. Tried to reinstall uplay and the game, tried different HDDs (C: also), tried all compatibility and admins rights - no effect. Just for experiment tried to install megamod. And the second problem (may be even biggest) is that Generic Patcher also doesnt start :wah:
I dont know what can i do.

UPD: OK, I figured out, that when I try to start SH5.exe or GenericPatcher in task manager appears 'dw20.exe microsoft .net error reporting shim (32 bit)'

I have final .NET framework included in Win10, as well as .NET 3.5 turned on in 'Windows Components'.

UPD2: As I didn't want to wait so long for solution, I did old-fashioned windows reinstall with C:-disc formatting :D And the game works :up:
So I suppose there was some registry errors which i didn't manage to fix, and full windows reinstall was only a solution for me. :yeah:

not sure if I'm in the right place. I purchased SH5 through Steam and the game was working for me for about a week. Then one day the game stops working. It just won't start.

-I get the usual pop up "Silent Hunter 5 Battle of the Atlantic CD Key" window, I click play,
-I get the usual message "Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device?", I click yes, my cursor briefly has an hour glass shape attached to it which was also what usually happens, then nothing.
-I'm on Windows 10
-It's set to run as administrator
-Compatability wass set for Windows XP Service Pack 3
-I've tried searching Google for every search term I can think up and am getting no where
-I've watched in task manager and can see the game briefly appear then disappear.

Anybody have this experience or have any suggestions please?

The default path should be C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5
This path is automatically recognized by the TWoS installation.

Run your game after the initial installation and updates to make sure it loads to the main menu and is showing v1.2.0 in the top right corner.
You can now install TWoS.

The reason why you are only showing 2 of the 9 patchers is you have installed the other 7 incorrectly possibly to the wrong path which is why you are getting the error message.

Now start your game from the SH5.exe.
Your game should load to the main menu.
You can use the Esc key when the girl's picture appears.
Make sure your gpu is setup correctly for all SH games

The issue was that the game was not updating to 1.2.0. I had to do this manually. Now I can at least go into the Museum.

The issue was that the game was not updating to 1.2.0. I had to do this manually. That is interesting because your point 3. 3. Run Sh5 and Update Sh5 through Uplay You stated it had been updated which is why I did not mention it in my post.
You can always check your game version by hovering your mouse over the SH5.exe

Thanks Peter. I thought it had updated as the Uplayer had said that it was updating, but clearly not. I had updated the SH5 to admin too (although not Uplayer).

However now when I just tried to restart the game, I am back to a small screen, the Ubisoft logo running and then crashing to desktop! Argghhh. This game is SOOO good and SOOO frustrating to get working!

I will have another go tomorrow (if time).

OK finally got back to fixing this:

1. Completed the upgrade ensuring that UPLAY has upgraded the Sh5 exe correctly (as above)

In the compatability
2. Set the exe to being in Admin Mode
3. Set the Disable Full screen optimisations
4. Go into Change High DPI Settings:
5. Program DPI ticked
6. Override high DPI scaling factor for Applications

This seems to work!

So now back in the Danzig bay, and can see a U-boat at 4300m, heading nearly 180 and not flying a flag. I am taking a course to intercept.

What you are now describing has now become the basic installation setup for SH5. The exception being point 4 which may or may not be needed depending on the players system.

I have managed to play all of them on Windows 10 but not very successfully on a laptop. None will take a very high resolution as they are very old games by today's standards and uPlay is next to useless as far as SH-5 is concerned

Not been on forum for sometime, has anybody heard if Silent Hunter 3, 4 and 5 are compatible with Windows 10.

Newbie to SH5 here. I installed SH5 from DVD. Seemed to install okay, except that it said my GPU wasn't the correct version in the compatibility window. I suspect that is just because it didn't recognize it. Anyway, I tried running SH5.exe, and I get a window that says it's checking for updates. Then another window pops up that says "A SERVICE IS UNAVAILABLE. A Ubisoft service is unavailable at the moment. Please try again later." There is a link to Ubisoft support that accesses Ubisoft, but nothing helpful for this problem. Clicking the OK button in the window results in the program crashing to the desktop. I have downloaded TWOS and tried following the instructions for that to see if I could get it running with TWOS. I set SH5.exe to Windows 7 compatibility and to run as administrator. Same result. I was able to update to version 1.2 using gu.exe, however. SH5 still won't run. I suspect that checking for updates is the problem, but I can find no way to bypass that step. In TWOS instructions, it references turning off web and update access, but it appears that the software needs to successfully start to do so. So, any ideas on how to get this thing running so I can install TWOS? Thanks for your help!

In what I thought was an unrelated thread, I found the answer. I downloaded a new version of Ubisoft Game Launcher Installer, uninstalled the version that came with the DVD, and installed the new version. After that (and a few error messages along the way), SH5 now runs fine. I was able to install TWOS, which happened exactly as described in the TWOS installation guide.


Now to start a campaign!

I can't help here, but im curious as to how to get SH5 steam version running with WoS on Windows 10 myself ... is it as simple as running the installer? im guessing not ... then to see if it works on updated Win10

With my Steam SH5, I have had to use the SH5 properties page and change some of the settings there. I assume you do not have the Steam Library folder and game in a Program Files folder, since you say you have had TWoS working previously. Navigate into your SH5 folder, and right-click on the SH5.exe file. Choose "Properties" at the bottom of the context menu list. Then left-click on the "Compatibility" tab, and try changing a few of the settings.

quick update:
i managed to naroow the issue to wrong saved game files.
Sometimes they do not load properly and crash the game to desktop.
Game is working again perfectly but the issue appears again.
Saved games crash upon loading.

are you running mods beside TWoS or changing mods during the game or saving around ships or planes or maybe underwater i never had a problem with saves on TWoS so dont know how much help i can be

Need your help.
Haven't played the game for a while. I have a steam version of a game, but it just don't work. Crashes occur when trying to start new campaign, and game freezes when clicking on "Graphics Settings".
Upon entering museum I get a tab up top with ship type but the screen is black.
I tried everything that suggested here, DPI set correctly, run as admin and have properties on win7.
I suppose, that it may have something with GPU, but cant find out, what's wrong.

SH3 and SH4 same issue.

I wanted to continue my SH5 TWoS campaign wich I havent played for years. I tried it and it worked but when I quite and saved the game ubisoft said it couldnt syncronize the save. This depends upon how long "I havent played for years" is in your book, but Ubisoft "updated "UPlay" to now be "UConnect". Your install most likely updated itself to the latest-greatest, and in doing so, trashed your SH5 install. Refer to THEBERBSTER's posting for

I ended up installing SH5 from scratch and downloaded and istalled the newest version of TWoS and now it is working again, running ubisoft in offline mode :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up: Sadly my old campaign was lost but never mind, I got this great game up and running again.

cannot see your photo (404 error) as it is probably stored in a private area for your userid.

no matter, have you tried using the 16:9 aspect ratio?
unfortunately, that is the highest resolution that Ubi have presented us to use.
keep in mind that 1920x1080 was state of the art back in 2007 when Ubi released this game.
now, 15 years later, the world has evolved but Ubi's design has remained in 2007.
sad, but true.

This MOD stuff is REALLY hard to understand. (SH5 Twos major mod)I finally have it running. I started my first patrol through Steam. I saw the KSD ICON and clicked on it but it didn't make any sense to me at all. I couldn't even sure of it's purpose.

So after all I went though all of the gyrations to install everything I didn't have time to finish the patrol. And when I exited partway to the initial destination it said the patrol was over.

Now I haven't gone back into the program again . I thought I would explore KSD first. I suspected it was a way to start the game. After trying several different logins(it doesn't specify what I am logging into, It accepted the Steam login. At this point nothing progresses. I tried many combinations of the various boxes but nothing happens.

ANy idea how this thing works? OR can I skip all of this and just go through Steam again to start my game? I know that these mods have a big problem with saved games and that there is a ritual that must be performed before loading a save or advancing to another level. Which I can't figure out either.

GreekMantanis, SH5 is just like SH3 and SH4 on the 'modern' Windows OS, in that the game was designed with WinXP DirectX v9 internals (the game engine). In that regard, you have to tell Windows not to help with the game's display. To do that, you need to navigate to the game folder where you have SH5 installed. Find the SH5.exe file, right-click on it and choose "Properties" from the bottom of the list. Then click on the "Compatibility" tab and then change some of the settings. Depending upon your computer, video card and display, you might have to change one, or several of the settings. Win11 is similar to Win10 in that regard and SH3, 4 & 5 are basically the same. Here is a picture from SH4 on my Win11 laptop, and the choices I had to make to get SH4 displaying properly:

Your computer might require the same, but most likely different settings. That upper "High DPI Settings..." Window comes up after you click on the "Change high DPI settings" button of the window below, which is the actual "Properties" window. You might not need the Compatibility Mode change, and you might not need the Administrator setting tick mark, but you almost certainly will need the "Disable fullscreen optimizations" ticked, as well as that "High DPI scaling override" with "Application" set from the "Change high DPI settings" button. On my laptop, I had to click that upper button on the "High DPI settings for..." window, since the computer wants to "scale" everything on my display to 125% for whatever reason, and when it does that with the game, some of the game's interface goes outside the displays boundary, of course... :roll: Anyway, try those settings (less the "scaling" change) and see what you get.

If you are going to eventually use the TWoS mod, and you installed the game to the "default" path, you are in "C:\Program Files (x86) \Ubisoft \Battle for the Atlantic..." or whatever the name of the SH5 folder is (I don't have it installed on this computer), Windows will rollback any alterations attempted in that folder. You will have move the game to a folder outside of a Program Files folder. If you create your own "Games" folder on the C drive and then install to that folder, any modding attempts will function correctly. vdr1981 mentions that in a pdf that comes with his mod. :salute:

No Windows 11 sticky so I thought I'd post here. Just installed TWoS on Windows 11 with a Steam SH5 install and it worked perfectly. 2 big things are to make sure SH5 and the install program are run as an administrator and to install outside of the porgram files/program files (x86) directories.

I'm also launching via uConnect. uConnect keeps giving me an error when I open it but if I go into offline mode and launch SH5 from there it works fine.

Saludos comandantes... hace mucho que no juego al SH5, en parte por los muchos problemas que tengo al usar ordenadores más modernos o sistemas operativos, ni Windows 10 ni windows 11... he leído varias soluciones, que cuando tenga tiempo, intentaré probar a ver si funcionan...


Es una lástima que UBISOFT dejara tirada esta gran saga... sería de agradecer que alguno de los genios que crean los Mods para este simulador, pudieran mejorar muchos aspectos que se han quedado obsoletos con el paso del tiempo, me refiero a mejorar por ejemplo, los gráficos y diálogos, poder hacer una remasterización de los gráficos del submarino, las explosiones, burbujas, interiores del uboot, la propia tripulación, que parecen robots en vez de personas... y aparte, si se abriera un hilo para comentar qué mejoras le harías al simulador, seguramente muchísimos comandantes participarían con sus ideas... otra cosa es que a nivel de programación fueran posible realizar las mejoras e ideas que se propongan... aparte también, supongo que también estará el problema de los derechos de UBISOFT, que intuyo no permitiría que se manipule su juego.
En fin, una lástima que esta grandísima saga la hayan abandonado...
Siento no escribir en inglés, también sería de agradecer que tuvierais SUBSIM con la opción en idioma español.

The problem is that about a month ago, when I load a saved game, the screen stays locked, and I have to go to the Windows desktop and restart the PC. If I start a new campaign, I play without problems, but as soon as I save the game and I want to restart it after a while or later or whenever, the image freezes and it does nothing, not even the mouse, I have to exit to Windows and restart the pc, as always, there is no way to continue any saved game... I have a Windows 10 pro, and the game is an original disc. When I have done a clean install, it installs without problems and all the requirements are green. I have tried some solution that I have seen to create a folder and rename the one to install the 1.2 update, and I have followed all the steps, but the problem continues... Any ideas? any solution? Thank you. I don't know whether to install Open Horizons or Wolves of Steel to see if the problem goes away or if it stays the same. I need your help.

I'm having issues running stock SH5 on a fresh PC build through Steam, when run it brings up a Ubisoft splash screen saying 'Checking for updates' which then fails to a screen saying 'A SERVICE IS UNAVAILABLE'.

I'll keep checking through the forum threads but thought it was worth asking if this was a known issue?

more than likely you are starting the game launch with Uplay.
Uplay is no longer supported.
search in this thread and you will find the solution that relates to Steam-purchased-license, Uconnect, and SH5.
before you swear at me for not giving you a definitive answer, i do not play SH5 but i know that a solution has been posted.

have you tried this method:
*1 I connect to steam
*2 I install my Silent hunter 5 I check the integrity of the files via steam
then I create a 'Backup' of the game in case there are problems when installing future mods....you'll see it's not luxury, you'll tell me thank you...lol
*3 I install UbisoftConnect I create an account or I log in if I already have it...
*4 I go to the UbisoftConnect options to adjust everything that needs to be
adjusted..namely give the path to your game so that it can be identified work...
*5 I check that the game works via steam start once but without playing it...by the way adjust your options via the in game option menu..then I stop the game
*6 I installed The Wolves of Steel v2.25 mods in accordance with the instructions provided in the Vecko PDF. I insist on this step which must be particularly respected, especially for steam..
I recommend that you disconnect from Steam when installing the mod
*7 I go to TWoS - OptionsFileEditorViewer in order to set what suits me in difficulty..
*8 I configure my soup of mods..pay attention to what each of them provides in game
read the documentation via PDF in the mod.. the same here I insist.. this avoids "stupid" questions
*9 I connect to Steam and UbisoftConnect I launch the game with the mods

I recommend that during any modification of the game or manipulation of folders or files, you be disconnected systematically, this is important...

So, I can save games, but not load them. I have tried both with the stock game, and TWOS, but in both cases, as soon as I try to load them from the main menu, the load screen appears, but then crashes to desktop. Any ideas? Is this a Win10 issue?
