Hey everyone,

I'm quite new to the U-Boat and Atlantic scene, coming from the Pacific :D. So I've finally decided to pickup SH3 during the recent Steam sale (it was hard to resist the price of less than 3 bucks).

Before I begin to ask my questions, with all due respect to those who say Steam is a pile of garbage and recommend that I should've bought the DVD instead, just please keep it to yourself :).

So anyways, I have two questions. Firstly, I've have found out that GWX is a must have mod/expansion so I downloaded and installed it, it works fine on tutorial missions but every time I try to start a new career/campaign or play the single missions, the game crashes. I've only installed GWX so far I haven't activated any of the mods that come with it.

I'm running Windows 8.1 x64, specs are that of a decent gaming PC, I've enabled Large Address Aware for it but still crashes.

Secondly, since I can't play GWX I'm playing stock campaign. How do I get the speed of a target? Do I just point my periscope and press that time button thing and wait for how long?

I've been doing the 3,15 method but I do not know how to enter the speed manually.

I had such a bug the first time, and I discovered it was a problem with units' name in sea folder or roster folder. Do you have a mission editor ? Try to launch it with GWX enabled, and see what happens.

If you want to play with full realism, i can't help you. Otherwise, change realism settings, and you'll have the speed automatically given on the notepad in periscope view.

To enter the speed manually, first press the F6 button and then you will have several dials. At first you cannot adjust them, so you will need to click the knob to move it to the right (marked "O") then you can enter the target's speed by moving the speed dial. Once you are done, click the knob to move it back to the left.

As for finding the speed, there are several ways. You can watch the ship through the scope and, if you have the right range and AOB, that can be pretty accurate. Unfortunately it requires you to leave the scope up and potentially be spotted.

If the ship is unescorted, it can be paced under water. If the ship speed is "slow" and you are outpacing it at 7 knots, then it must be going 5 or 6 knots.

If you're already having luck with the 3:15 or 6:29 method, then stick with that.
