Gunnery Sargent Hartman is the characters name. The actor R. Lee Emery in fact was a USMC drill instructor. He had been hired by Kubrick originally to advise Kubrick and actors (that where never hired) as to what a drill instructor would act.


Kubrick realized that Emery was ideal for the role and gave him the job. He had acted in films prior to Full Metal Jacket. Emery was a DI at the San Diego Marine Recruit Depot not Paris Island which is where the scenes in FMJ take place. In fact the entire film was shot near London.

I think he sounds much more intense in French actually French Foreign Legion basic in much harsher.

The actor that played Joker suggested Vincent D'Onofrio for the part of Private Pyle. Funny as FMJ made two people fairly well known both of whom did not originally have the parts they ended up playing.
