It's going to be with interest to see these close-up pictures from Pluto.

haven't got any link, heard about it some hours ago.

The Satellit New Horizon will be Nearest Pluto at july 5th(If I remember corrctly)

I guess we the ordinary sci-fi nerds have to wait for these pictures or there's a channel where we can watch this live.

So far, the fuzziness appears to be enhanced with every 5 million kilometers crossed. :hmmm:

Indeed it does.

Maybe some computer will make the image more viewable when Horizon get closets to Pluto.

Forgot the word about this thing about the computer-Know they(NASA etc) use computers to make fussy image more clear.

Lol, from a mythological standpoint.

Two days from the flyby. Pluto is starting to take shape. There a lot of vague tendril-like features that will hopefully resolve themselves as we get closer.

^ Thank you.

Saw the pictures and read the article in IFL. Was thinking about make a thread about it, forgot it and Voilá I have already made a thread about it.

It will take some time before the Scientist have "deprogrammed" the pictures a.s.o then we will have a lot of information about this planet.

I heard awhile back that Pluto had been downgraded from planet status.
Must be something about the number nine that the cosmologists don't like.
:88)I hate 9's
:doh:Me 2.

OMG, I see a skull feature! Those aliens bring death! We're all gonna die! I mean, with Greek mythology Pluto being the god of the underworld and all that.

I didn't expect it would take this long, to collect all the data

The best images can be expected on Wednesday, but it will take 16 months for all of the data taken by the spacecraft to be sent back to Earth.

Furthermore, the time for processing of all the data, should also be added

Roman mythology! In Greek was Hades! As seen here by japonese:

Pluto/Hades was not an evil god.
He was not even an unpleasant. He just had an unpopular job. :)

Obviously, when it becomes time to name the features and regions on Pluto's surface, there has to be a Lethe, Styx, and Dis among them.

New Horizons' not the only probe that was eyeballing Pluto lately.
Rosetta took a photo of it too on Sunday.

Actually, the phrase, 'My God it's full of stars" is not from the 1968 movie 2001 A Space Odyssey itself, but from the novelization that screenwriter Arthur C. Clarke wrote at the same time as the screenplay. The book describes the scene in which astronaut Bowman is entering the monolith star gate, and he says the following phrase just before losing contact with Mission Control: “The thing’s hollow -- it goes on forever -- and -- oh my God! -- it’s full of stars!”

And my attempt at humor was full of holes. :D

Some epic stuff there, I think Plutos age just got revised somewhat, lots of activity on the surface and not a great deal of craters there either. :yep:
Fantastic to also get some beautifully high-res shots of Charon as well. :yeah:

Looks like an impact crater at a very steep angle to me. They commonly have rebound mountains in the middle.

FYI, Charon was not named after the ferryman of Mythology, but after the discover's wife, Charlene. He only decided to stick with it after learned later that it was also the name of the ferryman and fitting for the system. But he insists it is pronounced like Sharon, not the ferryman with a K sound, and the name and pronunciation stuck. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charon_(moon)#Discovery

In 2003, she became Galileo project manager, guiding efforts to destroy the venerable spacecraft to prevent it from accidentally crashing into and contaminating any of Jupiter's moons.(obeying the "prime directive"!)
She had also served as a science coordinator on the Cassini mission to Saturn. At the time of her death, Dr. Alexander was project manager for the United States’ involvement in the international Rosetta Project, which marked the first time a spacecraft rendezvoused with a comet.:salute:

They said on the news, because of the great distance involved and the time it takes for signal to travel back to earth, we have only seen between 1 and 2% of the pictures Horizon has taken. Can't wait to see what's coming in the future, lol

An ice cube? Pluto is shrouded in haze that extends a good distance into it's atmo and the surface shows signs of ice flows.
