View Full Version : Which US-state to live in ?

Wondering what US-state I should pick if I had to choose

First of all no states where the temperature goes high in the summer.

I love BBQ a well made T-bone Drool Drool and I love snow and cold.

Have to choose between Texas and Alaska.

Texas, doens't it get hot in the summer there ?

What state would you choose ?

:O:

That was funny-

Many say that Canada is somehow a part of USA. While some say they are an independent state.

I will move to Montana, marry a round American woman, I will raise rabbits and she will cook them for me.

My choice would be Montana.
A lot of ground, a lot of forests and not many people.

Pennsylvania, to where my sister and aunt emigrated in the '60s. When I visited I got treated like Royalty.

Hmmmm, I like the look of Kansas but I'd probably build my house underground.
Cali is socially interesting but usually on fire and/or at risk of going to join Hawaii.
Hawaii has some nice geography but would probably be too hot for me, would love to see one of their shield volcanos though.

I think Colorado would probably be the place for me, you've got a good cross-section of climates, it's not too built up, and there's good transportation links to other planets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_Program#Stargate_Command).

I'm pretty biased for Missouri...but if I had to live in any other of the 49 states I'd say hands down North Carolina

Gorgeous country, coastline, mountains, forests, etc. I am never disappointed when I travel out there. Great food, friendly people, and good times.

If that's what you're looking for then definitely you should go for Alaska Markus.

Both states are so large that it's difficult to generalize about living there but Alaska has the last remaining true frontier country in the US. There is free land to homestead, no income tax (they actually pay residents a dividend each year), plenty of woods and wildlife. I'd be there now if I didn't have to take care of family here.

Texas on the other hand is hot as hell, full of stinging bugs, over run by poisonous snakes and subject to floods, tornadoes and dust storms.

You mentioned something I forgot.

I love to take a walk in the nature or camp if possible in the nature to see the wildlife and/or have a boat and fish in some lake. Alaska has always been in my view because of that.

Texas- Known for its BBQ that is a big plus too

Texans do know their barbeque but the other 49 states certainly hold their own in that department as well. Besides 90% of a good BBQ is the sauce you use and you already know enough Texans to have them mail you the best their state has to offer.

Canada. :D

:O:

I was thinking about answering that myself, but you beat me to it :03:

Does Hawaii count? Hawaii sounds nice.

:hmmm: Personally, I would probably choose New York or Illinois, just because they seem geographically similar enough to Ontario and you would either be were the Blues Brothers or Leon: the Professional took place.

Alaska it is, I can then take a vacation in Texas, one or two times per year, when it's not so hot.

Alaska has some pros and cons. Low crime, scenic beauty, lots of space, camping, fishing, skiing, rock climbing galore. But the winters can be brutal when you don't see the sun for weeks at a stretch. The cost of living is high since almost all food stuffs have to be shipped in. There is a dividend for residents who have lived there a year, but it doesn't really offset how expensive things can be.

Consider Montana as Alaska lite. :D

^Beg to differ having lived all over the country and driven most of it; Napa CA or any place in New Hampshire will fill your fishing & temperature climate requirements. It can get hot in CA but it's a dry heat and not muggy like mosquito infested Minnesota. Northern CA away from major metropolitan areas, north of the Bay Area to the Oregan border is simply superb with Seattle/Vancouver or Oregon a good second choice.

On topic:

I'd go for Montana. Shouldn't be too warm or too cold or too overcrowded there, with a lot of environment... a lot ( larger than Germany is with only 1.2 percent of our population ).

Could be hard to make new friends there.

Buy your self a large RV and become an American Bedouin.

More South in the winter, more North in the summer

Towards the coasts/borders if you want to be around dumb people... Did I actually type that or was I just thinking it? :D

I made a post about just that.

If I won a lot of money I would buy or hire a big RV and drive zig-zag through the USA, visit famous places, meet subsim friends a.s.o

It has to be alaska living middle in nowhere right in the middle of a big forrest in a little log cabin and if I'm bored, have a wrestling with a Grizzly now and then.

Or Alaska, where one can still live the American Dream, see TCBoyle, Drop City.

The sauce is my problem with most southern BBQ. There is so darn much of it that I have no idea if it is on beef, pork or turd tenderloin. Give me a dry rub and the flavor of the actual meat any day.

Onkel Neal
06-02-15, 02:28 PM
Aye, I always ask for the sauce on the side. I don't even use sauce until I've eaten most of the meat.

I live in a great area where I am. Northern Kentucky consistently gets top ratings for best places to live. And for good reason, we are in close proximity to many and varied excellent things to do and see. Every state has it's own beauty and unique features. I like Platapus's idea, rent an RV and travel around.

I think the biggest difference would be the endless forests Washington/Montana has.
Alpine forests are more like small patches between cultivated valleys and rocky mountains. :nope:

You just can't get lost here. If you don't know where you're going just walk until you find a creek and follow it or wait until an Italian comes by picking mushrooms and steal his GPS and car.
