Salute! Long time player but just not recently. I now have a laptop with no disc drive (Surface) and am looking at downloading a SH game to get back into the swing of things. I have played SH3, 4 (w/o ATO) and 5 and was originally looking at sh3 as a download. Just curious if anyone can comment on sh3 vs the ATO game. Are there compatible mods? would you prefer one over the other? Any info would help! Thank you all in advance!:salute:
If this is not the appropriate place to post this question I apologize.

I play both, and have reasons for liking both.
SH4 with the 1.5 U-Boats add-on is an improvement over SH3. It has several fixes plus some new features, like "General Quarters", which moves your best men to their stations when you call for it, and automated crew shift rotations, where in SH3 you have to rotate them yourself. In SH3 you can just shut off the fatigue function and not worry about it, but it's still cool to have them do it when they should. SH4 also looks a lot better, inside and out.
The bad news is that most of the cool mods for SH3 aren't made for SH4. I like the feel of going through the locks in the harbors and canals, watching the gates open and close. I also like SH3 Commander, which gives names to the ships I sink and the Merchant Fleet Mod, which adds dozens of new freighters and tankers to be looked at and shot at.
SH4 could theoretically have all of that, but it doesn't, so I still play both. If you can get them cheap I would recommend doing the same. :sunny:
