Grey Wolves!
Roughly two and a half years ago, I reported about the short career of KpLt. Franz Kerber (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=200741),
who perished in the icy North Atlantic during his second patrol in 1940 after an air attack.
Today, I wish to introduce you to Oberleutnant z.S. Karl Hartenstein!

Patrol 1
25 Jun 1940
Late Evening
After successfully completing the Frontausbildung(front training) in the Baltic Sea,
I receive my first assignment to answer the call of duty of the Fatherland.
http://i.imgur.com/gAZhgAP.jpg
However, before we leave we have an appointment in the 'Bar Royal'.
Most of the Piepels(nickname for enlisted men on u-boats) are terribly drunk,
yet I am able to find a seat at the table of some fellow, sober, commanders.
On top, I am able to keep an eye at the lady on the stage as well...
http://i.imgur.com/hDOneEl.jpg
Since I am a new face in the U-Flottille 'Weddigen', I am expected to buy the next round of beer and
while the alcohol level among my comrades rises, I learn about the latest news...

26 Jun 1940
Early morning
After a rough and, thanks to the lady on the stage, rather eventful night, I head for Korvettenkapitän Eckermann's office,
the commander of the U-Flottille 'Weddigen', to receive my patrol orders.
While waiting next to his door, my eye catches the chalk board with the current top aces.
Without expression, I wonder if my name will ever appear high on this board...
http://i.imgur.com/8n2TvO6.jpg
The commander briefs me quickly yet thoroughly and dismisses me with a snappy salute, wishing me the best of luck for my first patrol.
Alas, my first command.
http://i.imgur.com/vdkQpRM.jpg
After the I.WO hands over the freshly outfitted boat, we slowly leave Kiel with most of the men on deck.
Their faces and uniforms still clean...
On the boats' conning tower the new emblem, 'the wild Onager' amuses the crowd, while a naval band plays a classic German piece,
the 'Erzherzog Albrecht Marsch'.
http://i.imgur.com/w8P8qld.jpg
Although the boat is rather new, I can already see signs of usage among the valves and equipment,
even rust seems to appear already...
http://i.imgur.com/I7jGWbg.jpg
The II.WO discusses the torpedo load out with me.
I requested a complete T I armament since the T III, while next to impossible to spot on the surface, appears to have some problems.
At least I was convinced by their faultiness during my time in the Torpedoschule (torpedo school) in Flensburg-Mürwik.
My complaints did not find any attention though, and I got accused of having "inconsistent aiming"... tse!
http://i.imgur.com/cK6Dj1P.jpg
As we leave the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal (Kiel channel) behind us,
I start to prepare the Kriegstagebuch.
http://i.imgur.com/646LjRV.jpg
Later that Evening
We barely left the main land behind us and already the watch crew reports a ship in sight!
My heart beats twice as fast and I struggle to hide my emotions from my crew while I head for the bridge...
http://i.imgur.com/o1Lh8GS.jpg
Indeed!
As we close in, we see the British flag flying above the merchant vessel.
http://i.imgur.com/bv0G7Li.jpg
Well then, I.WO, your turn!
With a calm voice and in professional routine, the I.WO attacks the clueless ship from point blank range...
http://i.imgur.com/UKzEvD1.jpg
Half a minute later a huge water column rises and the ship breaks apart immediately.
While watching her go down in a matter of seconds, I can hear my crew cheering loudly from below through the opened hatch.
I can't hide my emotions now, congratulate the I.WO and try not to think about the crew of the destroyed ship.
http://i.imgur.com/TrUOnFE.jpg
After searching the surface for possible survivors,
I order to return on the original course.
Roughly 24hrs later, the Obersteuermann (navigator) informs me that we have reached our patrol area, AN43.
http://i.imgur.com/tw0DjcC.jpg
Days later, after cruising through the area in a search pattern,
I send a status report to the BdU, followed by a battle report.
http://i.imgur.com/iTYibGu.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/VqrPLWO.jpg
Suddenly, the voice of the III.WO rips the monotone silence apart...

Flugzeug!
Crash dive!
The boat quickly slips under the waves and vanishes into the safety of the Northern Sea...
http://i.imgur.com/xOSdV79.jpg
We surface at 1900 to recharge the batteries and breath some fresh air again.
After days of nothing, I decide to request new orders from the BdU...
http://i.imgur.com/QwFr0Ny.jpg
And new orders,
I shall receive.
http://i.imgur.com/4ktze1u.jpg
En route to our new patrol area we intercept many contact reports from other u-boats.
Unfortunately, none of the reported convoys is even remotely close to us...
http://i.imgur.com/bhIh2if.jpg
Yet again,
the unwelcome sighting of a British airplane forces us underwater...
http://i.imgur.com/9KgH1YM.jpg
And this time it was a close call,
the dropped depth charges detonate close to us,
shaking boat and crew around.
No damage though.
http://i.imgur.com/igCPmPR.jpg
Other boats are more lucky and actually find convoys.
Frustrating.
http://i.imgur.com/ypyUoob.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/UR5q9Xc.jpg
Days and nights go by and we still find nothing but occasional air contacts.
Again I request new orders...
http://i.imgur.com/VQTHkAE.jpg
Damn my impatience!
The BdU responds: "Did not understand your last message."
Just one way to remind me of my place and to do as ordered, I think while feeling embarrassed.
http://i.imgur.com/SZrIcK0.jpg
While we waste fuel in this sea of ghosts, other u-boats still report contacts.
I make a fist and swallow my anger.
http://i.imgur.com/JX9zpNa.jpg
10 Aug 1940
Evening
Finally!
I am trying to stay awake while reading 'Moby Dick',
when I hear the relieving report from the bridge...
http://i.imgur.com/V2I2KEJ.jpg
In a heart beat I reach the top of the bridge.
A merchant, no lights.
Perfect.
http://i.imgur.com/qHwgDeQ.jpg
Not bad, around 4000 tons the watch officer guesses,
checking the vessel with the UZO.
http://i.imgur.com/1tzP2rW.jpg
"Rohr 1, los!"
http://i.imgur.com/7s0ywpv.jpg
"Treffer!"
But wait,
the target keeps steaming on.
http://i.imgur.com/T9FHjY5.jpg
No visible fire, vessel won't slow down.
"Fangschuss, I.WO!"
http://i.imgur.com/xpUv5tP.jpg
The second torpedo does the trick.
The ship sinks stern first into the cold sea.
http://i.imgur.com/O5JK7HC.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/McRjHJ4.jpg
The following morning, already home bound, we stumble across a small tanker.
Having two torpedoes left, I decide to put them to use...
http://i.imgur.com/LC8ITjb.jpg
...but the first torpedo is a dud...
http://i.imgur.com/gyIydKB.jpg
...so is the second and last one.
I said it.
Something is wrong with these eels!

19 Aug 1940
Early Morning
After an uneventful journey home,
we arrive near Kiel and request an escort to the bunker...
http://i.imgur.com/Db1dDC3.jpg
While a tug guides us in,
I finish the last KTB entry of this patrol...
http://i.imgur.com/r4cMdeM.jpg
U-115 'The wild Onager' returns home safe and sound,
two pennants with the numbers 8000 and 4000 flying proudly above the boat!

Patrol 2
10 Sep 1940
Late Evening
The best news source these days seems to be drunk u-boat men,
so I leave for the Bar to catch up with the latest gossip.
http://i.imgur.com/4k8tqTY.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/Nh2c4oq.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/GvrlS8U.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/HUEuQLR.jpg
Alas,
after three long weeks ashore
our boat and crew is ready to leave Kiel again!
http://i.imgur.com/nYvhCel.jpg
We slowly slip out of Kiel harbor while a crowd composed of locals,
military personnel and sweet flower throwing nurses wave us good bye.
http://i.imgur.com/Ng9ZIpB.jpg
After clearing the Elbe,
I order to head right for our patrol area.
The Northern Sea awaits us.
http://i.imgur.com/ffOaWfJ.jpg
We reach AN61 the same evening and
start to patrol the area at low speed to save some fuel.
http://i.imgur.com/CBWqCKu.jpg
16 Sep 1940
Evening
The watch officer yells down the sub:
"Ship spotted, bearing 291°!".
http://i.imgur.com/9ghGXyu.jpg
A closer look confirms we found our first prey!
A small darkened tanker.
http://i.imgur.com/AGRienY.jpg
The night is dark enough to close in.
Many commanders shoot from further out but with the faulty T III torpedoes,
I want to get as close as possible.
http://i.imgur.com/YOVxoFo.jpg
After reaching a good position, I tap the I.WO's shoulder
and tell him to engage the vessel.
Seconds later...
http://i.imgur.com/b4cj1yx.jpg
...the small tanker goes up in flames.
Petrol or aviation fuel of some sorts I think to myself.
http://i.imgur.com/x7YUyev.jpg
Back on course,
we receive contact reports from far, far away.
http://i.imgur.com/4Eel8kj.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/AIGjuXU.jpg
Speaking about far away...
We come across a fast troop ship that is impossible to intercept for our slow boat.
We reported the position and course, maybe the Luftwaffe is more lucky.
http://i.imgur.com/KvgojkF.jpg
20 Sep 1940
Night
We spotted a merchant at slow speed.
Although it is dark enough and cloudy, I decide to attack submerged.
A possible deck gun was spotted aboard the target vessel.
http://i.imgur.com/4g31UuY.jpg
While preparing to launch tube 1, I realize that I still didn't sink a ship myself.
The last submerged attack on that lucky tanker during the first patrol was a disaster,
two duds in a row... or is it me after all?
The I.WO performed the surface attacks, already sinking 3 ships.
This is it. It will work out.
http://i.imgur.com/NuCFepf.jpg
And it does.
Shortly after the impact, the ship starts to capsize and sinks stern first.
It is safe to surface the boat now.
http://i.imgur.com/sS7OjaM.jpg
22 Sep 1940
After Midnight
Time to inform the BdU about the recent success.
http://i.imgur.com/iKI0JIP.jpg
Hours later, the response.
http://i.imgur.com/NrB4STi.jpg
Fliegeralarm!
To my surprise, this is the first air contact on this patrol so far.
Not that I would complain about the lack of British airplanes...
We quickly escape into the Northern Sea.
No bombs dropped.
http://i.imgur.com/h8tPh3J.jpg
29 Sep 1940
Noon
A few days of rough weather behind us,
we spot a lone tanker and prepare to attack from periscope depth.

"Rohr 1, los!"

The torpedo is underway...
http://i.imgur.com/JtovyN4.jpg
And detonates prematurely.
http://i.imgur.com/kNLJfA1.jpg
Now he knows that he is being hunted,
no time must be wasted, I fire another one right away...
http://i.imgur.com/nXLuQzA.jpg
Out of torpedoes,
we send the patrol results to the BdU who orders us to return to Kiel.
http://i.imgur.com/CQaiBom.jpg
30 Sep 1940
Early Morning
Another successful patrol.
Considering the high rate of duds among the torpedoes,
the lack of a deck gun I am more than pleased so far.
U-115 is a good boat.
So are my men.
http://i.imgur.com/P92N832.jpg
Korvettenkapitän Eckermann is pleased with my results and
congratulates me for having a mighty fine crew,
who can already be considered veterans, he says.
http://i.imgur.com/QfzRzOW.jpg
On top,
he pins the U-Boot-Kriegsabzeichen onto my uniform which was ordered by the BdU, Dönitz, himself.
It was usual to receive this decoration after two war patrols,
yet I am surprised!
http://i.gyazo.com/8aa28c16f9fd32e5aea480611f7ce59b.png
Leaving his office,
I follow my habit of keeping a close eye on the chalk board.
Schultze is still the top ace of the U-Boot-Waffe,
while Rollmann, Liebe and Prien seem to have their own private fight for the second place on this board.

Patrol 3
17 Oct 1940
Evening
We spend two and a half weeks on land,
went home to see our loved ones or enjoy Kiel in the fall.
Now it is finally time to head back out.
Two commanders of the 1. U-Flottille invited me to the bar,
they head out tomorrow as well - time to celebrate!
http://i.imgur.com/jNC0oMe.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/lQfq7uO.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/Uhv7ros.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/3Qb36XR.jpg
To my surprise,
my small coastal boat is ordered into the North Atlantic.
AM35 sounds promising as we might find in or outbound convoys there!
http://i.imgur.com/STIUqpO.jpg
23 Oct 1940
Late Evening
While slowly plowing through the sea north of Ireland,
we spot a merchant steaming along, unaware of our presence.
http://i.imgur.com/jgJ6jgl.jpg
We get in close, the I.WO already behind the UZO.
Everything is calm, the watch officer does his job as professional as usual
and just when I felt the torpedo leaving the boat...
http://i.imgur.com/4U0ceNC.jpg
Gun fire struck the boat!
The merchant did not only spot us, he also opened fire!
I order to dive the boat.
http://i.imgur.com/RFgQJUh.jpg
Immediately I hear damage reports from down below.
The stern pressure hull is damaged and we have flooding.
http://i.imgur.com/1CL4qqN.jpg
Too late for the British merchant though.
The torpedo destroys the vessel.
http://i.imgur.com/7TRNftd.jpg
4 Nov 1940
Early Morning
As expected, this area is rather crowded with vessels of all kind.
Surface attacks start to become routine.
The I.WO engages.
http://i.imgur.com/ddpMGPm.jpg
A clean kill!
The ships back was broken.
http://i.imgur.com/8Vk9Tyk.jpg
Before sinking,
the ships fuel goes up in flames...
http://i.imgur.com/5TLlSPS.jpg
We return to course.
Just as we finish breakfast,
the watch crew has good news again.
http://i.imgur.com/cbSSVnR.jpg
Broad daylight,
so I rather attack submerged.
This time - no dud.
http://i.imgur.com/NJ3Z3LI.jpg
Engulfed in flames,
the ship slips under the waves forever.
http://i.imgur.com/byJBn3O.jpg
We kept submerged for a few more minutes.
when I wanted to surface the boat...
http://i.imgur.com/s3a2ihP.jpg
Damage is being reported!
What the Hell is going on?
We have heavy flooding and the boat starts to sink fast.
http://i.imgur.com/jbOFvRY.jpg
The pressure hull in the stern apartment again!
Was the damage not fixed sufficiently?
No time for this now.
The boat continues its way to the bottom of the Atlantic.
http://i.imgur.com/zGqh9pR.jpg
The LI provides a more detailed damage report to me.
It looks bad.
The stern pressure hull seems severely damaged,
and the flooding is serious.
http://i.imgur.com/luzmZrB.jpg
I order to blow ballast tanks...
http://i.imgur.com/11eskF2.jpg
And indeed,
the boat rises!
Ironically, we can hear our late victim sinking,
while we rise for the surface again.
http://i.imgur.com/y8KLK5d.jpg
"Man soll den Tag nicht vor dem Abend loben."
(~ Don't count your chickens before they are hatched.)
The flooding is too severe and the pumps can not handle the water.
We are going down again, fast...
http://i.imgur.com/9hQemqb.jpg
My God!
We are sinking like a rock.
A type II-D u-boats test depth is 150m.
We are past this depth, still sinking...
http://i.imgur.com/LwQgWhC.jpg
Is this it?
*Note
I have to say, this was some of the most amazing things I experienced in AoD so far.
While the game has the most basic graphics and sounds, it somehow does deliver the fear and pressure in those situations very, very well.
Amazing!

04-28-15, 03:54 AM
While falling towards the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean,
I wonder what happens first.
Will the pressure hull fail or will we hit rock bottom and break apart?
Before I can finish to imagine the boat breaking up
and a huge burst of water ending my life...
...we hit the sandy bottom in 200m depth!
http://i.imgur.com/tycWEzp.jpg
Rumbling, noise, lights go out and on again.
Silence.
We are alive.
The flooding can be contained, and in the early morning hours,
the repairs are completed.
http://i.imgur.com/MbOltqh.jpg
Well then!
We pump the water out, preparing to blow ballast.
The valves open, the air bursts loudly into the tanks, pressing the water out.
And the boat rises.
http://i.imgur.com/5cK3ObJ.jpg
However,
this patrol is over.
After sustaining heavy damage like this, the next dive can be the last.
Home bound, we spot a tanker and make use of the last two torpedoes.
http://i.imgur.com/V2cN7WR.jpg
Hit amidships.
The tanker continues on course.
The last torpedo doesn't even leave the tube.
God damn these duds!
http://i.imgur.com/aKlzNz2.jpg
After reporting the damage and torpedo issues,
we are ordered to return to base for repairs and refit.
http://i.imgur.com/haaSBIA.jpg
8 Nov 1940
Afternoon
While we glide through the mirror like harbor water,
I reflect on the close call of fate.
If the bottom where we sank would have been rock, or just some meters deeper...
I discontinue the thought.
http://i.imgur.com/cBX3ad7.jpg
Leaving U-115,
a Korvettenkapitän approaches me, reaches out for my hand and shakes it firmly.
Apparently, the 1. U-Flottille has a new commander, Krvkpt. Cohausz.
Cohausz was in command of UA and took over the 1. U-Flottille,
while Eckermann took over UA.
They simply switched.
http://i.imgur.com/Ecl7SNI.jpg
While I make my report about the critical situation on the last patrol, I see a smile appearing on his face.
What the... I just tell the man about the near loss of U-115...
...when he interrupts me to congratulate me about my new command.
U-64, a newly constructed type IXB boat.
I struggle to find the right words, or words at all, so I just gratefully shake his hand.
"My crew?" I ask.
"Will be transferred with you and complemented to full strength!"
"Perfect!" I think to myself...
http://i.imgur.com/Ki3mOTA.jpg
Rather baffled by the recent events,
I even forget to check the leader board.
I just want some sleep.

27 Jan 1941
Evening
We spend 81 days outfitting and training with the new boat,
when new orders finally arrive.

But, old habits want to be maintained!
Time to hit the local establishment first...

28 Jan 1941
Morning
New boat, new glory?
We depart with the new boat and crew.
Heil und Sieg, und fette Beute!
http://i.imgur.com/uwigp43.jpg
29 Jan 1941
Night
Already we make contact with an enemy merchant.
Since the IXB has a deck gun and plenty of ammunition,
we can now save torpedoes - although we have plenty of them in this new boat!
http://i.imgur.com/m6XpnMP.jpg
A few well aimed rounds and the vessel is destroyed.
I gave the crew time to leave their ship before sinking it.
After all, I am expected to sink ships,
not kill merchants.
http://i.imgur.com/VLc6KCP.jpg
For two weeks we found nothing.
Every now and then an aircraft tried to surprise us,
but even the slower diving IXB was able to escape in time.
Diving due to bad weather, the sonar man reported slow ship propeller sounds.
Coming to periscope depth, I quickly sank a tanker worth 3000 tons.
http://i.imgur.com/FJjh7qt.jpg
Patrolling around CG16,
we hope to find more prey soon.
http://i.imgur.com/xAvTcWa.jpg
2 Mar 1941
Afternoon
"Smoke on the horizon!"
At last! A convoy!
http://i.imgur.com/QgwEPai.jpg
After closing in and shadowing the ships for a while to determine course and speed,
we inform the BdU about it.
http://i.imgur.com/A6X1kDi.jpg
Trying to sneak up on the convoy,
an escort vessel spots me and opens fire.
"Alarm!"
http://i.imgur.com/UgE2NIB.jpg
Quickly multiple escorts appear above and around us to hunt us down.
http://i.imgur.com/oBJGC5l.jpg
Silent running on roughly 200m,
a weird sound is scraping over the hull of the boat.
ASDIC.
Shortly after being pinged over and over, we hear depth charges hitting the surface.
http://i.imgur.com/Az0h0VY.jpg
I order evasive maneuvers and hear the bombs go off in the distance.
Way too shallow.
Still, we run into problems.
The boat is leaking and the pumps can't handle all the water.
http://i.imgur.com/AFEMapd.jpg
After hours,
they seem to have lost us, returning to the convoy.
This is the chance. We surface, close in again,
go to periscope depth to pick targets.
http://i.imgur.com/kl4rfO8.jpg
And attack...
http://i.imgur.com/jcEChxd.jpg
The 6000 ton tanker fires a star shell after being hit.
http://i.imgur.com/f9kgwuh.jpg
Shortly after the hit,
my sonar man reports that the ship is indeed sinking.
Time to pick the next target.
http://i.imgur.com/kGJj05r.jpg
A troop transport!
This time, it won't get away!
http://i.imgur.com/C5SZ0u8.jpg
...maybe.
http://i.imgur.com/VMyoDdk.jpg
The next torpedo strikes the target,
but is not enough to sink it.
http://i.imgur.com/J1sq959.jpg
A third torpedo finally destroys the target - not exactly my philosophy.
I once met Otto Kretschmer, who told me about his "One torpedo - one ship." philosophy and
also about getting close or even inside a convoy to cause maximum damage.
http://i.imgur.com/stiixhU.jpg
And the next tanker one is send to the bottom!
http://i.imgur.com/qAoVd8y.jpg
The escorts now understood what is going on and forced me to retreat for now.
http://i.imgur.com/X34ArFe.jpg
After a while, they leave me alone again.
At first I did not understand why they won't pursue me further,
but it seems the Brits developed new tactics.
They seem to be happy enough to just force us under water and away from the convoy,
probably messaging for help.
Who knows.
The boat surfaces in safe distance to re-engage.

In daylight,
we attack again and right away, the escorts close in,
trying to protect the herd...
http://i.imgur.com/kvCQieH.jpg
The angle on this ship is far from perfect,
but having only one torpedo left,
I want to try...
http://i.imgur.com/wdywpie.jpg
Out of torpedoes and low on fuel,
we receive orders to return to base.
http://i.imgur.com/DDfZLNz.jpg
It is a long way home from the CG quadrant,
so I use the time to fill out the KTB and prepare radio messages.
http://i.imgur.com/qEnly5G.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/ycOy8yi.jpg
While reading over the radio message that is to be sent,
I feel pride and satisfaction.
New boat.
New glory!
http://i.imgur.com/iSFnXa2.jpg
On our way home,
we sunk another two ships with the deck gun
for a total of 12 ships in one patrol.
8 Mar 1941
Morning
The crowd cheers loudly while we approach the U-Bunker,
all these pennants flying over the boat indeed look impressive.
All that's missing now, is a red one.
http://i.imgur.com/oq2Wv0u.jpg
Ashore again,
I learn that we even make it into the newspaper.
For sinking over 100000 tons of enemy shipping,
I was awarded the Knights Cross!
http://i.imgur.com/FrEYBS5.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/WiKls0O.jpg
Later, in Cohausz' office,
he demands to hear every single detail about my successful hunt...
http://i.imgur.com/gmesCFq.jpg
After the debriefing however,
he informs me that I am being transferred.
http://i.imgur.com/eVmmcBj.jpg
I have mixed feelings about the transfer.
The 1. U-Flottille was my 'home flotilla' after all
and I did not hear too many nice things about Wilhelmshaven.
Orders are orders, though.
Before I leave, I go have a last look on that chalk board.
Watch out, 'old guard', I am catching up!

Brilliant reports!
After 21 years, AOtD still offers a type of immersion unmatched by newer sub sims.

:agree:^indeed I'm off Gibraltar myself on my ol' WIN 98 computer still playing AoD :salute: It's heavily fogged and I'm approaching on the surface to do fearful execution with the deck gun to save the eels for later.:Kaleun_Salivating:

I'm using bandicam, before that I used fraps - which is totally outdated now but would do the trick just as good for screenshots.

Oh boy, Gibraltar, good luck on that!
I just hope I won't get 'the order' during that career and can stay in the Atlantic. :)
