View Full Version : Seeing the number of crew and cargo held

While reading the forum, people sometimes are posting statistics about the ships they sunk, how many crew there were aboard and how many survived, some stating what kind of cargo was being carried
Is there any mod or anything that states these things? Or even gives names to ships you sink?
I am using grey wolves mod currently, and sh3 commander. I look at patrol log in sh3 commander but it seems same as the in game log
By the way, off topic question, so far I have sunk 2 revenge class battlships. Does the game remember how many were sunk? Or is it possible I will see more revenge class battleships than actually existed? (If for example someone theoretically sunk all the revenge class battleships made by the british, would they no longer be present in convoys and such) Or will it even be less likely to see them, seeing as there are less in the world?
oh and another quick question,
how far can someone get a torpedo off at a ship?
I am using in a campaign that started in 1939, and in the 2nd Flotilla. I dont remember the name of the u boat or the torpedos, but they are the ones that require a direct hit on the ship. (I'm afraid of using the magnetic torpedos from all the apparent problems with them. And when I used one , it exploded prematurely. Don't know if I should be so afraid or not though)
I usually go very close to a ship that I want to sink. close enough that they are either in the circle or near the circle that shows on the map when you are all the way zoomed in. I just want to know how far people typically fire their torpedos from their target. Since in convoys, I am always having to literally go inside them, between the ships to fire my torpedos. Just don't know how else to attack. Really dangerous though, because I don't always know how many escorts there are. (But it was fun last time, it was night and rough waters, I was able to surface between two lines of ships undetected to get to the front of the convoy to sink a battleship! ... not so fun the two previous, where the escorts heard me and I had to run without firing torpedos)
I am just wary of shooting torpedos from very long distance, too scared to try. These torpedos are precious, it takes a lot of real life time to get around, and I dont want to waste a few hours of my life to watch all my torpedos miss ...

SH3 Commander does it.
Click the "Click for available actions" writing on the bottom right of your career screen in SH3 Commander and select "Update personnel file"
it will generate the personnel file including the ships sunk on you most recent patrol, it will name them, provide their tonnage and cargo carried and number of survivors etc
EDIT: The game does not know how many revenge class ships existed during the war, therefore it is possible you could sink an unlimited number of them so long as they are scripted to appear in the campaign file or spawn randomly.

Open Commander and click the little '?' at the bottom left. That will open the User Guide, which will explain all the cool things Commander does.
I think you need to read the forums more. I just the other day published the latest version of my Ship Names mod, which so far adds more than 12,000 new names to Commander's file.

Commander generates a patrol log after the patrol is finished. Then you will be able to transfer the Commander log to SH3 and look at it in that format.

They say SH5 fixes that, but not in SH3. Just a little while ago there was a thread by a guy who said he sank the Hood 5 times!
On the other hand there was also recently a thread by somebody who says he created a new campaign that fixes that problem.

Contact pistols and influence (or magnetic) pistols. In real life they didn't have that choice. They didn't even know why their torpedoes weren't working properly. They didn't have a switch that turned them on and off. They just had to live with it.

I don't use the map too much, but I always fire from between 500 and 1,000 meters.

I read the user guide before, but I was excited to play the game so it was mostly skimming hahaha I had the "use real names" turned on, but it was not appearing in the patrol log. Turns out I have been forgetting to "Update your personnel file" oops :p now I look at it and see it all, this is very cool!
About reading forum more, I probably should, I just have problems sometimes of getting overwelmed by all the threads. Like in the mod forum, so many mods are there I cant even decide which one to look at! Kinda like at a grocery, which has dozens of different sauces. So many look good, but how to know which one to look in to? And there might be other mods doing the same thing, but better!
sometimes ill end up looking at threads, and spend hours reading (lots of times when I find something interesting historically I look it up and spend a long time seeing other interesting things on and on and on...\
like I looked up to make sure I was part of Flotilla 2 on wikipedia. but I saw something interesting, going from uboat types, to captains from wwii and wwi, various battles, to the july 20 plot, to the people's court... wait, what was I doing? Oh yea making a post on the sub sim forum :p
guess im easily distracted

Aww that is too bad. And I assume number 5 is pretty bad in other areas so :p ah well.

If I was playing this about 2 or 3 years ago, I probably would be using them more, since I had a lot more time to play video games. But right now I just would be frustrated by having my torpedos not work as my reward after getting home from work and would probably just stop playing hahaha
How often do the magnetic torpedos fail? Do you happen to know? I mean early in the war. I am sure there is some coding behind it that can say, but not sure where to look

Thank you for these numbers, I will try to do the same

I understand, I really do. My problem is the opposite. I'm so obsessive-compulsive that I find myself wasting way too much time reading every single thread. And then I forget most of it anyway, so when somebody challenges me on it I don't remember most of it.

:rotfl2:
Been there, done that. :yep:
Sometimes someone will post a link to something, and then I'll notice another link that's totally unrelated...yep, two hours later I'll finally find my way back.

I guess being old and retired does have some advantages. But not many.

Isn't one of the realism options to turn off dud torpedoes? I don't ever do that so I don't remember if you can or not.

Yes, eventually he could turn off the "Dud Torpedoes" realism option :)
